What to do with worthless old car parts?

Sometimes I save old car parts just in case. Like if I replace my hood struts, I’ll save the old ones in case the new ones go bad within the warranty period. That way, if I have to send the new ones back, I’ve got something to put back on my car.

Now I need to do some garage clean-up. I hate to just throw this stuff away. It’s all worthless, even on eBay, but there is some good quality steel in some of it (like a pair of old sway bars), and some plastic, all of which should be recycled.

Does anybody know of a way to recycle this stuff? I don't think I can put it in my recycle bin...

I take all my heavy recyclables to my mechanic. He's got this old Fred Sanford type geezer that comes by and picks it up, and totes it to the recycler for cash. I was dropping off some spent brake rotors one day when he showed up, and I thought he was going to kiss me. See if you can do something like that. It beats going to the recycling center and getting in the cashier's line with smelly toothless meth tweakers...

yeh i just take mine to the county transfer site every once in a while

if you have couple lbs. of Cu the you could sell that to a metals recycler

where do you live?

most places have a transfer site in the Oregon desert they may be 100+ miles apart (about 2 people/sq. mile) -- in the valley, they are in each county, so pretty close

I took a load of steel to my recycler last week. I was paid $5/100 pounds. It was a lot of work for $32.00 but it was better than going in a landfill.

In this day, there is no such thing as junk. Someone wants it. The trick is find out where they lurk. Ebay, as suggested, is one such place. Craigslist too. The Recycler used to be the place. I think they're still around.

You might check with your recycling service. Here outside of Seattle, we can put non-greasy scrap metal up to I think 2ft square in the recycling bin. Just last week I recycled a bunch of parts from an old Mitsu diesel engine we have laying around. Probably 60+ pounds of stuff.
Getting paid for it would be nice, but it usually takes a truckload of scrapmetal before I break even on gas alone.
I helped a friend cut up and recycle a 914 shell a while back... I think we got something like $6 for it.

Hang on to them, you might need to trade them for food.

I take it all to the scrap yard on my car trailer. At 14 cents a lb. it adds up. So far my son and has cousin have made almost $2k this past few months just cleaning up the hedgerows and old farm dump down the road! We have another load going later this week! Keeps the kids busy and tires them out, plus cleans up the place!

Well, some IS junk. A couple of thinks are worth something, that I will sell. The rest, well maybe someone wants it, but it's not worth my time to list it on eBay, package it up, ship it out, for the $1 or $2 that I might net.

There are some good suggestions above, thanks.
