wow, enough about the economy. waste of food? pumpkins?

i dont have any hard numbers, but i bet way more than 50% of the pumpkin industry grows the squash purely for jack-o-lanterns, and turkey day. pumpkin pies are really sweet potato pies. isnt this a huge waste food?

anyone eat pumpkin? i think i have as a kid, but i wanna give some a shot. roast it up?

I don't agree, if pumpkins were made to be eaten, they'd taste better. Seeds are a different story, mmm pumpkin seeds! Most are used for recreation and if you want to give em a shot, try a 12 gauge turkey shot.

The Afghanis make some kick-ass pumpkin dishes. As a mild-vegetarian Im surprised too Vash, seems like a huge waste of a good plant.

As I understand it, the pumpkins used for carving wouldn't taste very good in a pie. A different variety is generally used for cooking.

We eat our pumpkins every year. My wife has some great recipes and with my vegetarian diet, I'll be eating my share this season!

Hmmm, yeah, we carve one each year, but I also usually buy one or two more for cooking throughout the season. Pumpkin pie (including several varieties - traditional, and bourbon-pecan spring to mind), pumpkin bread (unrivaled, I'll take on any State Fair entrant), pumpkin bars, pumpkin soup, and of course toasted pumpkin seeds. One good carving pumpkin yields an enormous amount of 'meat'. Tastes fine, too.

I did this one a couple of years ago. First time to do an "art pumpkin". Just used a stencil and a few different cutters.
