Gas near ATL?

I'm going to Petit, leaving tomorrow. I'm also reading all the horror stories regarding gas lines and stations out of gas in Atlanta. Will I be able to find an open gas station near the Atlanta airport when I return the rental car next weekend? Can you bring a gas can as a carry-on? (kidding)

It's been projected that the current gas shortage may last for another two weeks here in the south. As can be expected, the larger chain-style gas stations are the ones that seem to have gas. The mom-and-pops are struggling. Look for the big names, Chevron, BP, Shell, and even the QuikTrips and Race-Tracs are the ones to look out for.

If you're driving around, looking for gas, beware of the stations that are just trying to bait you. The ones that have no gas, but have cars strategically parked at the pumps to look like they're fueling. They're doing this in an attempt to still generate some busness...you may still run in for sodas or smokes since you've already stopped. IMHO, this tactic just torques you off!

There are a few websites that hellps. http://www.gasbuddy.com is a good source for finding who has gas and what they're charging. Enter the zip code for Hartsfield-Jackson Airport (30320) and see what you come up with. Road Atlanta is located in Braselton, GA. The zip code there is 30517.

Hope this helps

Randy

Some stations have been doing that, unfortunately. Personally, I'm kinda torn by that. On the one hand, I can understand the attempt to make sure there is gas for everyone, but in doing this, they also tend to force more traffic through their stations, generating a lot of non-gasoline sales.

I have a friend that was told they could only get $10.00 worth last week. At $4.00+ per gallon, it doesn't make it worth the effort of waiting in line for 30 minutes just to buy 2 or three gallons.

I filled up my 944 this past Saturday and was also able to fill two extra fuel cans so I had an extra 3 gallons. Hopefully this will last the next 2 weeks, until they have this issue resolved.

yeah. Its slim pickings here in GA.

There are rumors of people sleeping at the stations waiting for the tankers. You can also check out importatlanta.com at http://www.importatlanta.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=7 some folks post where current stations have fuel.

good luck!

Although I'm a long way from Brasselton we are getting the same problems here in Augusta with gas shortages. After all I think both these areas are supplied by the same pipeline. Part of the problem seems to be that there is no pattern to when the stations have gas or when they run out. Basically its a crap shoot. It's been bad enought trying to find gas but a real pain in the arse trying to find premium. On the bright side there seemed to be more stations with gas this morning than there were at the end of last week, so things might be improving.

I was planning on going to Road Atlanta this coming weekend but if there are potential issues with the gas supply to get us there and back I might have to reconsider. I'm going to keep an eye on the situation locally and make an executive decision Friday evening.

It might be a good idea to wait until after 10 P.M. to head out looking for gas if you're in an area where it's scarce. Fewer people out there... shorter lines.

Saw reports of this on the news this morning. Also saw accounts of people following fuel trucks around, like rats following the Pied Piper, waiting for the driver to stop and deliver his fuel.

Maybe I'll just pre-buy the gas for the rental car. It'll cost me more, but eliminating the hassle might be worth it, especially if I'm looking for gas while heading back to the airport. I always seem to run late heading back to the airport.

I ventured out after midnight and found one station with fuel and cars were about 12 deep. I got in/out in under 30 minutes.

Today, the local Costco had fuel, and there had to be at least 150+ cars lined up. Have not seen it that bad since the 70s.

Moral: Go early in the morning. And I mean midnight to 5:00 am

Does Atlanta use a "winter blend" like us in CA.? Perhaps gas will be plentiful when that time comes. The refineries that went down, probably came up making gasoline for the next season (winter).

Just saw an ad last week about one of the car rental chains that no longer charge a premium for filling the tank for you - just market rate for the area.

Of course, I can't remember which rental co this is...

Saw something recently on a news magazine, might have been 60 Minutes, about most car rental agencies really gouging the customers that didn't bring the car back full.

They embarrassed a few especially bad places that dropped their refill prices after the taping.

I drove to the airport this morning (7:30am) and found that quite a few stations had gas with minimal lines. Regular only.

Its been hard pressed to find gas for sure. You can be looking for hours and suddenly stumble upon a station that has gas, wait your 1 hour, fill up, then leave,. Within 2 hours, they are out again. I found a QT that night had gas last night @ 12:15 AM, and only had about a 10 minute wait. I took all 5 cars up there and topped them all off. Got home @ 1:30AM. Station ran out as I pulled away with the last car. I have seen no places that have been rationing the amount though. Its really hit or miss. www.11alive.com has a great site. Go there, then 'wheres the gas' link, and watch. Its a live update. As soon as someone posts somewhere has gas, you had better be on your way.

And yes there are cops at most places, as people try to cut, and serious fights have broken out. I have seen at least three cars run out of gas whle waiting in line and had to get pushed to the pump. Its really a bad situation out there.

Man...that's another reason I'm glad I moved out of the Atlanta area into our lake house on Hartwell. No gas lines even though supply is limited. Have had no problem getting 87 for the cars....and I found one station about 4 miles away (off the beaten path) with premium for the bike.

Things seem to be improving rapidly where I am. I filled my '87 Carrera up with Premium this evening about 6:30pm and was one of only two cars at the pumps. Driving around there are a lot more stations with gas than there were just before the weekend and I didn't see lines to speak of at any of them. I'll see how the situation goes for the rest of the week but I'm starting to think I'll be watching some good racing this weekend. We probably need to sort out a Pelican meet...

Anybody know the gas situation in N. Ga. (Suches)? A group of us are planning a ride this weekend.
