Cat Eating Festival in Peru

Is meat "meat"?

Maybe cat is good eatin'.

Quote:
They believe that eating cat burgers – and fried cat legs and tails – can cure bronchial disease.

It is also believed that feline meat serves as an aphrodisiac.

The cats are bred especially for this festival – which takes place at the end of September on the Day of Santa Ifigenia.

But it has generated fury among animal rights groups.

Guinea Pig is on the menu in many places in Peru..

Spent two weeks in Peru in 2006 and tried all the local foods...

I may have had cat, though nobody told me lol.

Peru is a very interesting place to visit, a huge amount of history, never mind the cat, great cuisine. They invented ceviche.

Why do they have to "breed" them? Out where I live they breed just fine and overpopulate in a blink of an eye. Maybe they have it right down there.

actually better breeding rabbits
they breed faster, and cheaper

they are lower in the food chain, and as such require less feeding cost = higher roi
and easier to fatten up

my freshman year in college, i got horribly sick. losing weight, fever...sick. i went to visit Dr. Downs, the family doc. he took a bunch of test, and found some liver infection. he was (bless his soul) very old, and mumbled. i was very out of it. just laying on the chair. he says something like..."you have a liver infection...blah blah blah...wierd..blah blah blah...you sometimes see if when people eat cats...blah blah blah.." on the drive home, my mom says, "did i hear him say, eating cats?"..i wish i could remember two things. the name of that disease, and the name of the antibiotic he gave me. the pill gave me a RASH! i blew up like a toad.

in juarez mexico, there is a taco stand that we jokingly called -Gato tacos. i always wondered how that name got started. to this day, i wonder if i ate the kitty.

Cats? Interesting. I'd try it. No emotional attachment. Dog? Might be great but I probably couldn't do it for the opposite reason. No outrage here for those that do partake, though.

Was down in central MX in an open air restaurant. Cool place, I saw barbecued conejo (bunny) on the menu. Prepared on a spit rubbed in ground chile de arbol. Y'know those dried, dark red, evil looking things in Szichuan food? Yeah, same thing. Out it came, an entire Thumper sans head, fur, and guts. Absolutely covered in the roasted ground chilis. Searing pain, but one of the most delicious things I've ever eaten.

Now they also had these grubs that live in the bottom of the maguey plant - I think is the same worm that used to be in the bottles of mescal - they fried those up and ate them in tacos with green chili. A delicacy, they were over USD 100/lb. I drew the line there. No need to eat grubs when there's plenty of grilled bunny and other meaty, sinewy animals...mmmm ok I'm getting hungry, is it lunchtime yet?

Stijn - you could consider boxing him like a veal, and/or basting his food with teriyaki...

i'm dipping him in beer every evening, like kobe beef
*that probably explains the rather comatose state during the day*

You're not supposed to dip him head-first, that may be your problem....

"PETA’s staff says the last thing we need to do is add yet another poor animal to the list of those being frightened and slaughtered for a taste."

What a bunch of fags

look, you try dipping a cat in liquid
Needs proper soak to tenderize the meat, and if not head first, it's a full on 30 minute battle
i'm telling you, head first is the path of least resistance, then at least he quiets down after a few minutes.... when the buzz kicks in

I think a careful combination of seasoning both the inside and outside is in order. Flavor is from the inside out, no? I suggest feeding the beer first, for less struggle during the dip.

Exactly, Matt.

Feed the cat a nice scotch or bourbon.

I am not sure what the implications are, but I enjoyed this post even more by reading it in a John Cleese voice in my head.
