Wrong. The Audi Coupe Quattro is an icon, the production version of one of the most successful rally cars ever.

The original S4 and S6 are also excellent cars, but being from the '90s I'm not sure you could call them classic.

Had we gotten the Porsche-developed RS2, then we'd be talking classic.

Beats me. I don't know about anything Audi pre-Quattro.

I don't know if you could argue the old Auto union stuff was audi anymore than you could say its Porsche, or Benz.

The old Auto Union stuff is pretty obvious, but I can't think of anything Audi from the '60s - 1980 or so, as Cliff asked.

The Audi 75 (see "F103") was made by Auto Union in the mid 60s; Auto Union was part of Volkswagen. AFAIK, it was called "Audi".

Audi as a brand, (in US anyway) did not exist until the late '60's.

VW/P decided they needed an upmarket brand and introduced the Audi 'out of the blue', pulling a name from the past. It was one of only 2 mainstream cars available in the US with front wheel drive (SAAB was the other).

There was an 80 (rebadged NSU - see kstar's pic above) and 100 - was a pretty nice car w/ some reliability problems.

There was the Audi Fox (nee VW Dasher) in the early '70's which really put them on the map, saleswise, and finally the 5000 in the mid '70's, w/ the famous inline 5.

They were all front wheel drive until Fredinand Peich put the 4WD drivetrain from the VW 'jeep' of the time under the 4000 (successor to the Fox) and created the quattro.

So, they did not exist here (US) prior to the 60's.

The Audi 5000 revolutionized the automotive design world.

This commercial is the best. They stole the design from Audi. Keep this in mind while watching.

Yes, the original Taurus was a straight rip-off of the second 'aero' version of the Audi 5000 (100).
