Tuning the Carrera gets the Cops called
Chasing down some air leaks on the intake, got it all back together about 9pm, Fired it up and ran great, set the idle adjustment with the LM-1 only had it running about 10 min and it has one of Ben's prototype B&B header mufflers on it, a bit loud, in fact very loud. Put all the stuff away, closed the garage door and about a half hour later the Cops show up asking if I was running my car tonight, I said yea I just got it all back together and was tuning it, he asked if I was in a feud with a neighbor, I said no, not at all, I know it was the old hag next door, the one who fires up their lawn mower on Sunday night at 9 to cut their lawn: Why don't people like this just come over and ask to keep it down instead of calling the Cops??
|
Because they have nothing better to do in their lives.
|
Neighbors are the reason it takes me forever to get things done when working between 9PM-2AM. The compressor can't kick on, the air wrenches can be used and I can't hammer anything too loudly :( Never mind starting the car up.
Winter might be a bit better when all the windows are closed and the wind is howling....to cover some of the noise. I still want to buy a little farm 1/3 hr west of the house....a big pole barn would so nice...and the hourses and cows won't be calling the cops. |
Time to go to straight pipes?

I know why people don't knock on your front door when there's a problem. We've lived in our present home for 23 years and have seldom had any kind of issues with our neighbors.
Two years ago a new neighbor moved in across the street. We have always gotten along really well. Until: He has 1 barking dog and also keeps 5 exotic birds in his garage. The birds squawk from early morning until it gets dark at night. They open their garage door about 1/4 of the way, so the noise heads across the street and it's like the birds are in our home. So we put up with this for almost 2 years and than finally I go over to ask them if they could not open their garage door at AM because of the birds. I could have called the Sheriff's office but decided we could settle this, neighbor to neighbor. I didn't complain about the barking dog even though I hear it almost every night when I am in my office. Anyway, right off the bat he gets defensive and it's like I am the problem and not his birds. My wife goes over to talk to his wife, the next morning with the idea of smoothing things over but let them know that there is a problem. All my neighbors ask how we can stand the noise from the birds. Well now whenever I day hi, I get this cold response from him and his wife. So I should have just called the sheriff......bottom line is that the birds are much quieter and that's a good thing!!!! |
Dude, I got the cops called on me for working on my cars, having a car w/ a tarp over it in my yard, having the dog officer called because on a day when we weren't home, the dogs were "barking excessively" (they really only bark with outside stimulus, someone parked out front, etc.); I live across from & next to 2 cops. I figure it's the other neighbor next to me - the one who has a lab that barks, that has a floodlight aimed at my bedroom window on a motion sensor that trips with every car that passes by (it's like living next to a motel some nights... on / off / on / off).
Well my pups are out chasing each other around our 6' privacy fenced yard one day with the wife out back with them... of course they're barking as they play, etc.; he asks my wife to basically muzzle my dogs because his 3 year old son is out back playing in his yard & the dogs "might scare him". Yeah buddy, get a life. It's mid-day, my pups are out playing, deal kiddo. I don't say boo about neighbor one firing up his lawnmower at 7am Sunday, or emptying their pool into my driveway, or the remodel crud of the neighbors' houses blowing across into my yard, zilch. But I've had it recently & said, "f-it", and put the Fabspeed muffler bypass tip back on the 911 for a few weeks before the season ends. I'm a car guy with dogs. Deal. |
ask him to muzzle his kids b/c they scare you dogs...
seriously, this is a great chance to prevent another dog hater from being created -- go over; mention the incident and offer to introduce him + kid to one of your dogs -- let him pet the gentlest dog you have, etc. |
the lady next door adopted a dog, not by her choice i dont think. in short, the dog tore up anything i left out and some things i did not. the dog even bit(barely broke the skin) my 12 year old daughter. she would not do anything about the dog, someone else called the cops, then she got mad and went up and down the street looking for the person that called the cops and wanted to know why they did not just come to her.
people say "why not just come to me" but when someone does come, it usually turns into an argument anyway. instead of going to the boss, i said something to a guy at work that was doing his grocery shopping while at work, it just turned into, you do this and you do that argument. now the guy behind me leaves his windows open and his dog barks constantly until he gets home late at night from partying, do i confront, call the police or lay in bed and get mad about it while not sleeping? yes i make noise, band practice 2 nights a week but we are done by no later than 9:30, i have no problem with stopping, in fact, the judge that lives about 200+ yards away called one night and asked if we would stop, not a problem, i gave him 200 gallons of diesel fuel later.....another story. |

I have a Bursch exhaust which is pretty loud and I am quite apolagetic about it. I would never run it excessivly or rev it in the driveway, and I always try to coast into my garage. It's common curtousy for something that loud.
My next door neighbors have 2 weimerieners (large hunting dogs) which can make an absolute racket, but they are good enough to keep them quiet 99% of the time. By and large my culdosac is extreamly quiet. This is because EVERYONE makes an effort. |
some of you appear to be doing commercial work in residential areas -- usually a zoning law violation
even as a hobby, when my friend painted his harley, hid truck and his sailboat in his home shop he never never should have done that -- he vented toxic fumes all over his neighbors face it - people are trying to live next to you |
something to be said about living out in the boonies! unfortunately not all neighbors are reasonable and the permeable me only society makes life crappy for all those that are reasonable. your dog barking is a no no, however his cat prowling the neighborhood doing it's business it just being a cat and has the right to do that! gimme a break.

I lived across the street from a Porsche exhaust hater..he'd call over and ask me if I was trying to "compensate" for something. Granted my car was really loud and I'd fire it every morning at 07:00 on my way to work, and usually I'd roll it out of my driveway and start it up in front of his house because I didn't want to wake my own kids up.
I guess I see where he's coming from. I'd be pissed too if I didn't like the sound of a barely muffled Porsche motors. Dogs are another story though. I don't like 'em much and if I had a neighbour who let his dogs run around barking and growling (like they do when they play) I'd be a bit annoyed too.....wait a second - I'd probably not be all that annoyed myself but my wife would be and she'd get me all pissed off. Geez - time to move out in to the woods! |
Craig, you scofflaw! :p

my neighbors and i all have dogs and they all make noise. but i do have the loudest car;) no one complains yet:)
|
I say get the frikin' dB meter....any/all "sound" ordinances are quantified.....If you (or he/she) can't meet the specs then have at it..
I know, I know,..overkill... Hobby? Commercial? That line should easily be drawn,..It's the results (acoustically), that matter,..aside from jack hammering at 3 in the AM... Send 'em a frikin fruitbasket..cook 'em a steak.....whatever. Best, Doyle |
25+ years ago when I had my first Porsche, a '73.5T, I had a very short drive to BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit). So, I used to start the 911 up in the garage, set the hand throttle at 1500rpm, go back in the house, eat my morning toast, drink my coffee and read the paper. I then drove the warmed up 911 2 miles to the BART parking lot.
Well one day I decided to take the day off, slept in and didn't start the 911. When I went out to get the paper, my next door neighbor was rushing out to his car and asked what the hell happened. I asked, "What do you mean?". He said he didn't hear the 911 start up and over slept. So, that day he was late for work. |
my neighbor the judge, was razzing me the other day about me leaving in the mornings. he said, "there he goes driving the LITTLE car" or "he's driving the truck this morning". i take it easy and told im sorry. he said thats ok, i know it is time to get up. i asked how he knows when to get up when im late because of beaver feaver?

have a neighbor who is waaay too gung ho about various things she wants to do with our HOA's ARC. hired guns reporting violations, wants fences in yards that kids play in so she doesn't have to see a few toys outside, doesn't like people leaving their garage doors open during the day, crazy **** like that.
so my gift to her this coming holiday season is me converting my std. muffler to a 3 out sport version. i'll get to the caps at some point..... i am very careful not to be chop sawing metal or checking timing @6k rpm after the neighbor kids might be in bed and i suspect this keeps me out of trouble. it helps that i have a 4yr old and understand how it works. i do my own car maintenance in my garage/driveway and if somebody has a problem with that well they can stuff an oily rag up their arse and light it. it's an infrequent thing; i could see somebody complaining if i were a commercial operation. bottom line is if you refuse to let your neighbors have ANY impact on your life you're not only missing the bad, you're missing the good as well (poker games, 'hood bbqs, beer in the driveway time, etc. etc. |
Back when my bro and I were in our teens, we'd work on our cars till the wee hours regularly. My parent's un(sound)insulated garage and driveway were only about 50ft. from our neighbors master bedroom. Years later, after they'd moved out, we found out from the new owners that they had actually added sound insulation to the walls facing in our direction. They never said a word to us about the noise and were always very friendly...
Thanks Mr. & Mrs. R! (need a tear-of-joy smiley) |
All it takes is a little common sense. Would you want your neighbors to make a lot of racket form some hobby they enjoy?
In a former neighborhood we had one very young couple behind our house that loved to throw LOUD parties. Just about every other Friday night the music was so loud the police received about 20 complaints. They were issued tickets but they had a wealthy attorney dad that seemed to keep them from being arrested. They were a real pain to be around. One morning after they had partied until 4:00 AM my other neighbor saw me working on my chain saw at about 9:00 AM . He brought out his chain saw over and we had a repair clinic. It took quite a lot of revving the saws and some test cuts on the firewood to get them running in top order. The funniest part was seeing the party animal come out and yell something at us about trying to sleep. |

Now if they had just come over and said "its getting late can you not run the car" I would have shut it down! But the Cops? Thats just stupid! |
as i told our hoa board...when people have to present their own objections (vs. having others do it for them anonymously) they think long and hard about just how important their objections are.
|
Two months ago I broke in a 57 Chevy in my driveway, but it was 10AM Sunday morning. The procedure was rev it up to 3000 RPM and keep it there for 20 minutes. The neighbors came over to say hi and what a cool car it was. No problem.

I have GREAT neighbors..
dog got out..Pat called me and followed Max's around the hood till I showed. I have keys & codes too 4 homes, I DID NOT sing..past X-mas one them suggested caroling..right ... at least 40 of us + 20 Dogs with christmas light collars going around shrieking for 3 hrs... best part..second to last house, gent. comes out thanking us..lamenting about how things and times had changed.. could he & friends perhaps sing for us.. we stumbled upon a Pavorotti junior and co. love my hood Rika |
I'll be over tonight around 8 so we can fine tune mine. It should take more than an hour and a half:eek: The baffles will be out
|
I have to admit Craig, I was expecting a very different story!:D
I could bring my car over with the gutted G2 sport muffler and we could investigate the harmonic differences between a 3.4 twin plug, a carb'd 2.7 with an M&K muffler, and a 3.2 with a cat bypass and virtually no muffler. That ought to be enough to give the old bat a heart attack!http://forums.pelicanparts.com/suppo...s/beerchug.gif |
Yea, that damn car has gotten me in more trouble lately!! Hey, what you guys do in front of my house I cant control.
|
Too bad the camaro isn't driveable right now, I could do some infinite burnouts in front of the neighbor's house.:D
|
I live on a quarter acre lot, and the narrow drive runs to the back corner where the garage is located. I race with the SCCA, and my car has little muffling, and unfortunately, must be loaded on the street into it's trailer. This fact has meant that due to last minute glitches, I miss events, because if I can't get it loaded by 9PM, it doesn't go until the next morning, which means 12 hours of getting to the track time have been lost.
It's only a minute or two of the car running just above idle, but I know it's annoying. Yet, even with my self imposed restrictions, and best attempts at keeping the noise down, the cops still show up sometimes. What kills me is that nobody has ever complained to me about anything. The house is way nicer than when I bought it..(the previous owners didn't own a lawn mower, so i moved in in July to an unmowed that year lawn), I made sure my garage is insulated for sound and the doors are closed whenever I do work, yet still, the cops come a knocking if that car starts up. When I moved in, I said "hello" to any neighbor I could find, and the north neighbor looked at me and walked away. nice! His daughter lives with him, and her kids as well, and the noises and fights she has with those kids have nearly caused me to call child services.... ...but i don't want to be a bad neighbor, and while it's disturbing, i know it's not crossing over to the abusive side of things, so I don't. But, I agree, come over, and let me explain what I''m doing, and we can work out a solution. What's really annoying to me is that the guy down the street with a Harley is louder, yet nobody ever calls in about it......... |

I broke my hand (boxer's fracture) just the other day after the neighbors left their two large dogs out yet again. I have a high tolerance for just about any kind of annoyance but I can't turn my head the other way the way I can for an Eye-sore. Lawnmowing? Doesn't even phase me. Even my neighbor, who may be the slowest lawn mower operator on the planet, doesn't bother me when he spends and hour and a half pruning what should take 15 minutes. At least it serves a purpose, and it only happens once a week.
After contemplating what gun would be most satisfying I had a beer and called the cops. After another hour I was ready to take the law into my own hands. As I stormed over to the neighbor’s house I punched my garage which wasn't nearly as soft as I had expected. Possibly for the best, it certainly took some of the wind out of my sails. I still rang the door bell and discovered why the Police had no effect - they weren't even home. I can handle a couple minutes of barking until the dogs are brought in. I think for 90% of the population there is no way to just deal with hours of on and off barking from a dog that is left out on a regular basis while the owners are out. This $&#* could make an Iguana homicidal. If you think your dogs don't bark when you are away you might be mistaken. I'd like to say I don't know why my neighbors have decided to see if they can break me; but I can. They are just oblivious. |
Rat poison in a raw hamburger patty lobbed over the fence will cure that problem ...
Domestic confrontation is never a good idea. You simply don't know who you are dealing with. My wife chooses to send an anonymous letter to the offender. So far it has worked pretty well and the abuses to property and ears subside. |
Mega-Phones aimed at my ass-hole neighbor. The rest of the neighborhood just puts up with me as I try to be nice when talking to them.

You are joking--I hope? If not, do you have any idea the prison time one gets for poisoning someone's pet? Again, I hope your suggestion is a misguided joke! Mike |

Boy see what you started cgarr?.............Now your talking about controling the pet population. Next thing your going to invite next door over for steaks and have a speical seasoning for them.

I've worked on the 911 in the past, and the neighbors were cool and would stop by to see what I was doing.
They were kinda  at seeing the engine/transmission out but were like . It was a week at most then came the tuning part, I did it during the day when most were at work and it was pretty loud. I have been asked to come help neighbors with their cars and actually helped this lady who is on the HOA board with her Jeep. Wouldn't start in P but it turned over in N. Turned out to be the shifter sensor. She kept saying wow... dealer would have made her bought a new tranny. I do cap one side in the AM's and leave gingerly.. :D I've yet to do a Seafoam treatment. SmileWavy |
