The diesels are coming - too bad the economy is crashing...

Well, I saw advertised in the new Road and Track that both BMW and Mercedes will truly bring their 50-state diesels to the U.S. by Fall/Winter of this year. That's the E and M-series Mercedes powerful enough to tow a commercial jet, and the 3-series that has more torque than a V10 BMW but is as fast as a 300 hp twin turbo gas 3 series.

But damn if there's anyone I know who can currently afford such superior cars.

Or really afford any car at the moment...

Oh well, there's always the secondary market.

I test drove an '09 Jetta TDI. I like it better than my '06. Better fit/finish, torquier motor, better mpg (44-45, I think, compared to my 39-41).

It's unbelievably quiet. And the new motor makes it damn near sporty.

funny FORD doesnt think they will sell so we wont be seeing any of theirs. too bad they wont be spending any of their parts of the $700 billion tax break on bringing in products consumers actually want.

I keep hearing about the Subaru flat-4 turbodiesel and Honda's 2.2CTDi that are supposed to be coming to north america in the next rear or so.

They must have VW shaking in their boots

dd, you forgot to mention that not only are they fun to drive, but they get significantly better MPG than the gas equivalents. That never hurts in a tight economy.

Well, you'd become one quick enough.

The one good thing I'll say about owning 4 VWs in ~8 years: I sure learned a lot about working on cars... from electrical to transmissions, brakes and LOTS of front end work. Oh, and lots of make-do roadside resuscitation efforts.

Yep. sure learned a lot, probably as much as I learned owning Renaults.

Correct. Truly the best of both worlds. Nothing like blasting past gas stations as you drive nonstop from L.A. to San Francisco - and beyond - maybe to the Oregon border.

I'd love to see a BMW 3 series diesel at the race track. With all the power it develops, I'm sure it'd mop up a lot of what's out there now. Plus, driving to the track, lapping all day, then driving home on one tank of gas...ur...diesel...

LOL. Ouch.

Can't hurt a German engineers pride much more than comparing it to a frog car.
