Shocker of the Year: Recess Helps Kids With ADD!!!!!

http://health.msn.com/health-topics/adhd/articlepage.aspx?cp-documentid=100213117&page=1

I mean c'mon, is this a shock to ANYONE? Most kids don't have ADD, they have ENERGY. But because parents and teachers don't think kids need to play anymore, they pump them full of drugs so they can "focus". Or because God forbid, parents might actually have to PLAY WITH their kids! You think recess might also help with childhood obesity? No, that couldn't possibly be the answer.......

Sadly, this is one area where I agree with Tom Cruise (and South Park). ADD is an absolute farce. If my kids were able to sit still and focus for 4 hours straight, THEN I'd be worried. Hell, I can't sit still for 4 hours straight. Kids are supposed to run, and play, and be silly. Wear them out a bit, and they'll behave just fine. Don't make them see Christina.

+1000

I remember the biggest adjustment for me (a very high-energy kid) going from grade school to middle school was lack of recess.

Even in college, the longest classes were only 1 hour 15 minutes. (Okay, so I had one four-hour night class, but we took 10 minute breaks every hour.)

Now I am expected to sit in meetings that last 8 hours with one 30 minute break for lunch.

Of course, I never host meetings like that. If I can't say something in one hour, it's not worth saying. I do occasionally have to do code walkthroughs, but I break them up into two hour sessions because concentration really lags after that.

My sister has two boys. Play at recess is so restricted, it is nothing more than standing around anyway.. A bit of fresh air I guess is a good thing.

That's ridiculous. My fragile little flowers can't be subjected to the humiliation of the schoolyard. Why the other day someone THREW A BALL in the vicinity of my my little baby. It nearly grazed him! Fortunately his affirmation and self-worth therapist was able to rectify the situation. He was so fidgity (sp) in class from the incident, I just knew that having him stay inside was the best option. Thank God we were able to give him Ritalin to calm his nerves while the teachers talked him about how smart he was to recognize the letter "A" at the tender age of 4.

In high school (Waubonsie Valley), some of the overachievers would grind up and snort Ritalin so they could "concentrate" on boring lectures. Yes, I am completely serious.

when i was a kid, my teachers would simply turn us loose like berzerkers. mudball wars, smear the queer.

this one lazy coach once dumped about a 1000 tennis balls onto the court and said, "cliff, make up a game". it turned into the most brutal dodge ball game in the world. "bounce shot" kills meant you couldnt become re-animated. i am surprise coach didnt get fired. blackeyes, and concussions aplenty. it was a blast.

you should have seen the zombie game...oofff. i had bad dreams.

Smear the queer, I remember that one fondly. Also wrestling in gym class where we could kick eachother's asses, and dodge ball. Did I mention two of my middle school gym teachers had played minor-league baseball?

Pretty sure all of the above would today result in criminal charges.

I volunteer for the Cub Scouts where my son is a scout. He is in the last phase before transition to Boy Scouts (I've always hated the name 'Weblos'. ) We hold the meetings in the elementary school gym, and always close the meetings with a fathers vs. sons dodgeball game. The kids LOVE IT!

If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball!

dodge ball was the best.

my zombie game... my entire 5th grade class played it. you start off with 10 zombies. everyone else was human. the zombies were forbidden from running. they could only walk. humans could sprint away to safety. zombies had to resort to trapping, sneaking, whatever. once you tagged a human, he/she became a zombie. the last few human holdouts was a effed up scary thing to be. it took weeks to take over.
