VW Touareg any good?

Going to look at them this weekend, not a new one, maybe a 06 or 07 What to stay away from on them?

Ummm, everything? I have read some real horror stories about the Touareg. Think Jim C Audi bad. Seriously, bad bad news.

I used to have a VW. I was getting it repaired at the VW stealership on day. While checking out, I mentioned that I might turn my car in and get a Touareg. It was like someone has stopped the music. Both of the people behind the counter looked at each other, and the woman checking me out mouthed the word, "NO!". I think that tells you something...

I loved driving my VW, it looked cool, and felt sporty. But honestly, I think they engineer them to last 40,000 miles. It was fine until that point, but then the car literally started falling apart. I mean like the doors no longer being flush on the body falling apart! After 2 $800 trips to the dealer in 2 months, I was done.

Seriously - CR worst used cars report - right up there with the LR discovery if that says anything - Crummy mileage - try and find one with the finish still on the switches, control surfaces (look at one and you'll know what I am talking about)

I'm surprised to hear its a POS, but at half the money of the pepper car, what do you expect

Same platform, sure. Like you said, its cost half of what the Cayenne cost.....so where do those cost savings come from?

Stay away from the first year models, which is usually good advice for any car. They had serious electrical problems. A friend of mine has had a second year model with extended warranty for awhile now and it's a great car.

I have a 04 V8 fully loaded except for air susp. Except for a dead battery once, it has been trouble free for the 49k miles on it. It is however a very heavy vehicle and can be very expensive to maintain. I average about 16 mpg premium.

When I managed a VW bodyshop...I was the only person "qualified" to reset the clock on them. Required at least some form of graduate study to figure that out.

Imagine Audi gremlins but exponentially worse. Never own one out of a factory warranty.

i gotta chime in on this thread also.

i have an '06 touareg with the V6.
a little over 41k miles and the only issues i have had is the tires wearing thin at about 35k and at the same time the brakes were almost done.
with a V6, pickup leaves a lot to be desired and the mileage is consistent at 18mpg. not horrible for a 5200# truck.
my next will be the V6 TDI.

Go to www.clubtouareg.com for lots of good info. We researched for quite some time and bought an 06 v8 with 24k. No problems so far. Web site even lists 04 through 05 seriel numbers to avoid due to electrical and step motor issues. About 16 mpg average but great performance and a sweet engine pulled from the Audi A8 with a little detuning.

We had an 04 Touareg V6 for 3 years. It drove well but the mileage was no better than our current V8 Yukon monster. We had a lot of random electrical glitches (seat/mirror memory settings disappearing, HVAC control panel freezing up until the car was shut off and restarted, etc.). About 2 years in the dealer diagnosed a bad battery, which may have explained these problems. Apparently when the battery voltage drops the electrical system automatically starts shutting things off to reduce the load, which could explain some of the weirdness.

I enjoyed driving the car a lot more than the Yukon, not a surprise. We were planning to buy out the lease but eventually decided we needed more space, hence the Yukon.

A good friend of mine bought a very early Touareg (sp?). He put a LOT of miles on it in the first year he had it -- something like 30,000 miles. He loved it.

However, he had many, many electrical-related problems. He stuck with it because he really loved the car, but it was in the shop many times & they couldn't always figure out what was wrong.

One time he had been out of town on a business trip for 3-4 days. When he got back the car wouldn't start in the airport parking garage. The VW dealer told him the battery went dead because he hadn't driven it for so long. 3-4 days!? Come on -- that is outrageous!

We had an '04 V6 and had a number of problems. VW replaced it with an '06. We are just shy of 40,000 miles on the '06 and the only issue was an AC fan in the dash that needed to be replaced a few months ago which was covered under warranty of course.
