Reading through this thread, it's amazing that there aren't more assaults taking place after car accidents. The only accident I've been in where I wasn't at fault:), the driver of a truck hit me going probably 40 MPH through a parking lot at work. He apologized profusely, then HONESTLY told his insurance company the story. They paid up, no problems. There are a few good people left on Earth.

Dave,
I work for a company that has nine retail stores. This happens all of the time. Here is what I recommend that you do: Go to the store as early as possible today and ask to speak with the manager/director of loss prevention or security. Explain to them what happened and ask if you can get a copy of the surveillance video. You need to do this quickly because some systems will archive video every 24 hours and it will make it a tougher task to retrieve. You want to make it easy for them. Also tell them exactly when it happened if you can. Again, make it easy for them to help you out. You will also want to get this done without the need to get "permission from corporate". Bring with you a high-capacity USB flash drive. Ask them to put the video on it. If you need to wait until someone can burn a disc, it will probably get handed-off to their technical staff. If it does, there is a good chance that you will be placed in a request queue with low priority. If you have gotten this far without being blown off, ask what time would be best to stop back to pick it up. This shows that you are not being a jerk and demanding to be serviced immediately. If you have developed a good rapport with the person that you are dealing with, they will probably do it right away or give you a real estimate when it would be ready. If they tell you to stop back, offer to bring them a cup of coffee when you return. |
Small update:
I went to Ralphs, but they will only release the video to the police (there was another option, but it still did not sound like they would give the video to me). If I need to, I'll file a police report. Ralphs keeps the video for a month. I realized over the weekend, that I do not have comp on my Toyota, so I have to go through her Ins. I called and filed a claim today. It's possible that the adjuster called me back this afternoon, but the VM was totally garbled. I will call the adjuster in the afternoon tomorrow. As for repairs, I am thinking that I will replace the turn signal assembly (I have to), but I may not fix the bumper and use the rest of the money (I don't expect much) for bills. More as it comes in... |
three years ago i was going to a meeting in studio city. i park the bike, and start to take off my helmet. i see a guy across the street waving at me. i think "that guy looks like captain kirk". i get the helmet off and the guy is now waving and yelling. i think "that is captain kirk". it takes me a moment to wonder "why is william shatner yelling at me?".
i turn around and see an escalade about an inch away from backing over me and my bike. the driver in the SUV had noticed kirk too. and stopped just in time. |
So was it really William Shatner?
Saw him a couple months ago at a sushi restaurant, Katsu-ya, in Encino. |
Sorry to hear about the bump. When I saw the thread title, I was thinking we'd see pics of some hottie!;)

Years ago, I was driving a big ole FJ40 Landcruiser with a V8 conversion, big tires, etc. A monster. Some skate-punk loses control of his board and it goes flying under the wheels (I had just turned the corner and was going less than 10mph). Board goes "crunch" and kid starts yelling at me "you're going to buy me a new board!" I'm like  ? He keeps advancing and screaming how I trashed his board and I have to pay him.
So...I did what I thought was proper. I backed up a few feet so I could see the board in the street, adjusted my position on the road to line up with the board and ran over it again. Flipped him off while I casually drove away. |
***Update***
All settled. She admitted to backing into me and her Ins. accepted 100% liability. The Ins. co. came over today, looked at the car and cut me a check for $600.00. Now it's time to send my little Corolla to KevinP73....

You were unlucky, but that quick of a resolution makes you very lucky! |
Farmers (her Ins.) was actually a little pushy. One department called yesterday morning and gave me the claim # again and a number to call, to setup the appt. for the adjuster. I did not have a chance to call back until Thursday evening and the adjuster actually called me first late afternoon - but I could not take the call and had to call back later.
All in all, a very easy issue to deal with. I do feel for the girl, as she'll probably have her premiums raised. Had my turn signal not been crunched, I may have forgotten about the issue - the Toyota is my daily beater - I mean driver and the right fender is not so straight anymore and I bought the car with the expectations that it would be bumped and bruised. I also thought at that moment that the turn signal assembly would cost a couple hundred to replace, turns out it is not very expensive. |

P.S. You just got hosed. Any estimate that includes a paint process entry should be no less than $1,300.00. |

They did short me by giving an estimate for a aftermarket turn signal. But I new that already and even told the guy. That kinda sucks. It was an OEM signal and should be replaced with an OEM signal. It's only worth about $4,000.- as it sits. |
