The Big One in El Aye
The gun carry thread got me thinking. I have some granola bars and space blankets in the trunk of my daily driver, but when the BIG bell rings with a 7.8 or better what contingency plans do you El Aye and Frisco (I know you hate that term) guys have to get home from work. For me it's 23 miles from Burbank to Santa Clarita (Newhall). I'm thinking a backpack with food bars, sunblock, a hat and coat (in case it happens in January; it can get to the low 30s at night in the winter). I wear tennis shoes everyday and jeans. I'm thinking about one of my 9mm or a 380 ACP. Worst comes to worst, I think I could walk up the I-5 from Burbank to Newhall in about 12-14 hours. God forbid I'm at one of my shows in Manhattan Beach or Lancaster (about 50 miles each).
OK to post about home earthquake plans. I'm going to buy a Honda 2000 watt generator soon for my pop up camper, which will also power at least on refrigerator. Water heater secured, check, Fine Art secured, check, 55 gallon aquarium secured, check Wall units secured, check Two ton safe in garage secured, check ![]()

Bottled water in your backpack, one of those flashlights you shake to make them work, hand crank radio, leatherman tool, matches in waterproof container
A few 5 gallon water jugs at the house would not be a bad idea

Pocket radio, and a lighter are great idea. Got two leathermans ones going in the car. Got about 15 gallons of water in the garage, should probably rotate it. At home, enough chili, beef stew corn, to last two weeks, should probably look at that as well.

My sister and her husband live out on the edge of LA by Pasadena. The hilltops are ok, but the valleys look rough. For reasons I will never understand, she and her husband absolutely refuse to have a gun in the house. I have told them to get a 12 gauge, and a couple boxes of buckshot, no big deal, no need to run off and join the NRA. Nope. I just don't get it. I guess their plan is to put their faith in everyones natural 'good nature' when it hits the fan. Mind boggling.

I have 10+ gal of water and survival food for 2 for a week along with first aid kit and other survival bits (rope, matches, lights, batteries, etc). 2K rounds of ammo, 250 rounds of hollow point.
Have basic tools and first aid on the bike and in the car. I figure with the bike I can probably get home unless things are really messed up. Lane splitting, sidewalks and lawns are all game for the GS ![]() |

Here's a good site for preparedness: 72hours.org.
I've got a earthquake kit at home, work and a small one in my car. It's easy to set up and really could make a difference when a big quake happens. |

I'm more worried about someone taking a pot shot at obama - talk about sending race relations back 50 years in this country.

That is silly Jeremy, you should be more worried about hurricanes. Of course you are not worried about earthquakes, you are in FLA
go to an Army/Navy surplus store and get some MRE's, or a camping store for some dehydrated stuff, does not go bad, but cans are pretty good. Camping gear would be handy, have some bleach around for water purification

I will take my chances and NOT PREPARE for an earquake of 8.0 in LA....However I will be getting a surfboard if it does occur....as I figure LV will be the new Malibu.....
I lived in So CA for nearly 50 years....nevr prepared nor worried about the BIG ONe. It all depends on where the epicenter is? That will determine the amount of damage done. If the epicenter is in Burbank to Newhall than I suppose ya gotta be concerned but if it ain't why worry?

I've got canned food, gas, a generator, lots of water, guns & ammo, warm clothing and the means to cook (camp stoves, etc.) I think I'll be fine.

I believe I'm well-prepared for whatever mishaps head this way, except that I haven't yet gotten a generator (yet). I figure that electricity is a luxury in such situations. Batteries and candles are far cheaper and more portable...
