Pictures from the Porter Ranch, Ca. fire 10-13-08

Hi!

I was able to get within about a 1/2 mile of the Porter Ranch fire tonight and took some pictures. I smell like a campfire! There are a LOT of LEO up there and they have done a good job blocking off most of the roads. As I was going in, some crews from Santa Barbara were heading out. Even though I'd be glad to help out, I really don't envy any of them right now.

First vantage point.

Second vantage point.

The winds were not as bad as I thought they would be, but it was windy and may pick up a little tomorrow.

I'll venture back up there when the fire is out.

OTOH, if you are mortgaged in one of those homes and can't make the payments, the fire looks like it might help you out real soon.....

Hmmm, never thought of that angle. Any media talking of arson down there?

I think you'll have issues with the Ins. Co. later. Mortgage will be paid, but you lose your possessions and now get to find a new home.. For the most part, we all live in bad areas, but we get to choose our demise - be it fire, flood, tornado/hurricane. For some of us, we also live with the thought of the "Big One".

Some of the houses that are in the line of fire, are multi-million $ and not a year old, some have not been finished.

The Porter Ranch fire aka Sesnon fire, began in the oil fields, North of PR. I don't think there is an indication of arson for this fire at the moment. I have not been following the Marek (close to Lake View Terrace) fire much.

Only if they prove that you did the arson. Plus, if there's already a fire on the way, and you maybe have a friendly word with the crews... All hogwash supposition, but an interesting angle.

We're on the same page, Art.

I guess I'm just really thinking of the personal possessions. I can be reimbursed for the value of my possessions, but some (most) can never be replaced. OTOH, I don't have a mortgage...

Holly smoke, Dave! That is really scary. You are a real craftsman with the camera however. Very good pictures.

Nice pictures! Some of those homes look like they are still occupied.

Thanks for the pictures Dave.

I currently have my girlfriend's adult niece, husband and three kids living with me as a result of these fires. They were evacuated yesterday morning about 4:30a.m. I've got people on futons, air mattresses and in my spare room (and their birds) and whatever they could think to throw into their two cars.

I was with the husband at the Dodgers playoff game Saturday night and he said everything looked under control at about 10p.m. when he got home. At 3am he said he woke up because the wind was howling and it was obvious the fire was right on top of them. They got their cr@p together and got out. Now, the question is how many days before this thing is under control?
