Old Classified Ads - Original 550 for $4,995 and RSK for $7,450
For guys with old car magazine collections, this will look painfully familiar.
Sports Car Digest has a story about "Classified Ads from the Past" where they highlight a 1962 Road & Track ad for a 550 that is selling for $4,995 and a RSK that is selling for $7,450. I for one wish I could go back into time with a bunch of money...I would certainly pick these up. From Sports Car Digest: http://www.sportscardigest.com/archives/1845 |

One of my '71 R&Ts has a 550a body/chassis - no engine - $1000. And a one owner low miles '64.5 mustang for "first $250". Or how about a new Pantera - suggested retail only 10k?

11% and 13% annual ROI, they're like stocks that you can drive!
![]() Everybody that was around in the '60s and '70s has the "one that got away" or "the one I shouldn't have sold" story. For my dad it was a '68 Roadrunner he bought new, a V12 Jag XKE he had a shot at for dirt cheap, and a BMW M1 in the '80s he could have bought for a song.

There was also a time when lots on Balboa Island (in Newport Beach, CA) were given away free with the purchase of a car!
Now those houses (or even a bare lot) go for $1-8 million. A time machine would be great. |

What I'd like to get my hands on is a copy of Hemmings from the pre-internet days. I'm curious what old P cars were going for as recent as that, say 1993-94.

I'd love to know what a '73 RS went for back then.

I'm not sure when this all happened, but I read that recently deceased Henry Payne purchased a 904, 906, 907, 908, 910 and 917 for $50,000 TOTAL. That is incredible. |

I dont know for sure, but looking back at my old Competition Press/ Autoweeks from the "70's has many Porsches for sale, mostly 65's -75's. They seemed to be the higher end of the marketplace at the time. People wanted Porsches back then as they do today. The cars that were most avaiable were old race cars. One ad says "1965 Shelby GT 350R, 2 engines, 2 tranny's, extra wheels, tires, etc. for $10,000. Its so fun to look back to those issures, it makes me feel young.

Back in '73 I had to pass on a freshly restored yellow over red '56 Speedster. I had $2500 but my pops wouldn't front me the difference to reach the asking price. It was $4500...

I still have a late 60's Road and Track with an add for a 300 SL Gullwing for $8000. I begged my father to buy that car, never mind that he barely made $8000 per year
![]() It was the only sound investment advice I've ever given out, and I still remind him of that. Jay

Another painful one - this is a A.C. Cobra 427 S/C selling for $10k in a 1974 R&T:

I still choke up when I recall this one: In 1964, one of my best friends in high school bought a white on red 1959 Jag XK150 drophead coupe for $1,000(!). The car was in great shape as I recall, and we immediately took it out on a 140 mph run down the Parkway toward Lewiston(top down of course). Freddie kept it a few years and unloaded it for a loss.

I've got several Auto Trader magazines from the early 80s. When I feel like torturing myself I pull them out and look at all the toys I could have bought for next to nothing. I could retire comfortably just off the Corvettes in one issue.

That's another group of stories that I am simply glad to write about. It is hard to believe how naive I was to those things in high school. |

If you hang on to your 911, in 20 years you'll be saying that you didn't let this one get away from you.

jtdoyleiv, the best part of the story I didn't tell.. Freddie's cousin had an Esso station and he got to use the lift and change the oil after our run. The ol' Jag had 4, count em', 4 retreaded tires!! We had a lot of fun with that car, but no more high speed runs(at least when I was in the car). His dad was a real sport and bought for a family car a new Chevelle SS 396, which was one *****in' ride, I will tell you! We were looking the engine over one day and his little brother dropped the wing-nut that held the aircleaner cover down the carb, "tink", and we couldn't fish it out. We were hoping it would just pass out the of system(like a bad jalapeno), and I guess it did, as I heard nothing about it later.
