Ray is loving the car.

He did suspension, got custom rims made up, Brembo brake upgrade.

Sucks, I've had my car 6 years and he's done more to his in 3 months.

Don't get married, don't have kids.

Hurts the toy budget.

I've been a night owl most of my life... I don't have problems sleeping, I don't want to go to sleep.

I might miss something. LOL

If I ever need to get to sleep by a certain time, about an hour beforehand, I'll take a half a 3 mg tab of melatonin (buy it right off the shelf in the vitamin/herbal section of any drug or grocery store) and read a little while with a dark colored cloth thrown over the bedside lamp.

When the book falls out of my hands and hits the floor, I know I'm just about gone... usually less than 30 minutes.

Good for Ray! I'm glad he is having fun.

Married - BTDT, no kids.

Never played with SUSE. Only Slackware and Redhat, oh an obscure distro - e-smith aka Mitel SME.

BTW, it needs to be a book, not a magazine or a parts catalog.

It needs to be just like when I wuz in school... magazines and catalogs are too much fun.

Told my IT guy to build me a Redhat Enterprise box. So he builds me a Win 2000 box.

Won't get into my response.

Last thing I wanted to do was port my legacy/current stuff to Win.

So he goes and builds me a Suse box.

Had I known I would what a PIA it would be to migrate I would have made him wipe and give me RH.

SUSE is a good OS, just hate having to deal with the .nix system inconsistencies and fixing paths.

People are always concerned for me because I don't sleep. I tell them that I think that's funny, because I feel exactly the same way about them; how can you sleep your life away?; way too much in life to do!

Can't sleep? Allow me to introduce you to my good friend Jimmy Beam. He'll sooth your mind and help you sleep.

SUSE && RedHat == yuck. Solaris 10 FTW:-P

Although, if you're apps are already setup for a Linux environment, GLHF getting them to compile on Solaris.

Just curious, any reasons for MySQL over PostgreSQL?

Other than familiarity, no.

Have postgresql running on at least one of my servers.

I run MAMP on my laptop so I can work wherever I want and just makes migrating to a live server easier for me.

All my environment variables are mirrored.

I hate trying to implement something on a production box, have fubared the odd one or two in the past. Not pleasant. Always happens at the worst possible time.

My insomnia was related to elevated liver enzymes and liver disease. Get a thorough medical check-up to be sure you don't have anything else going on... Your body may be trying to tell you something...

Gotcha. Was only curious because a lot of people seem to use MySQL, but relatively few use PostgreSQL (which I prefer). The lead developer of MySQL just stepped down from SUN, and I think one or two other key developers left. Oh noes...might have a been a $5 billion poorly spent. (But I don't think so, personally.)

The leading M in MAMP would be MacOS, correct? How do you like it for actual systems work? I've tried it before for desktop use (admittedly not for too long) and just couldn't seem to get used to it. It has quite a following, though, and is built on BSD, so I just figured it was me being resistant to change

I run XP on my desktop, mostly because I "have" to, and Solaris 10 on my desktop with Windows 2003 running in a VM to simulate the AD server at work. Part of the reason for that is because I'm building a backup server, which will likely run Solaris and 2003 in a VM, so that if the main server goes down, I can have the VM performing as a PDC while I fix the AD box. Gotta love virtualization...

Oh, and by now you should know that implementing things on production machines ALWAYS happens at the worst possible time. Especially if you suggest it, management says no, and then decides later it was a Good Idea. Drives me nuts when that happens.

Sorry to hi-jack your thread, I just needed my geek-time for the week! Hope all is soon well with you and your wife.

Hey Dave,

Yup, OS X. I love it since it basically ships with everything, last 2 versions even have Ruby, no compiling, no dependency woes, just run a command line and turn on what you need. The amount of geek factor under the hood is really awesome.

It's interesting that they decided to include so much in the OS and the majority of their consumers don't know it and don't need it but for us geeks it's awesome.

The problem with the UI is we are used to "something", OS 9, Windows etc... so any switch is weird.

If the UI is to weird just fire up terminal and go command line.

Booze is the double edged sword. I fall asleep quickly only to wake at 2:00 am for 3-4 hours and be exhausted in the morning.

Doesn't MySQL have some licensing issues that PostgreSQL does not?
