back in '71 i was driving a cab in nyc. i had picked up a little chinese woman and was driving her downtown on the bowery, as i approached canal street i was in the left hand lane and trying to get into the right. a traffic cop directed me to cross the bridge to brooklyn as the lady in my cab started screaming "no brooklyn, no brooklyn!!". i was still trying to get to the right lane as the officer thundered at me to cross the bridge. i said that he may be able to write me a ticket, but there was no way he could force me to go to brooklyn. he starts yelling at me to pull to the curb.
the poor woman in the back is crying and jabbering in chinese, the officer comes to my window and snarls,"gimmee your license. i'm gonna write you up." i hand him my drivers license, he looks at it and says," do you know dave braham?" this caught me really offguard. i look at his nameplate under his badge. officer croce. it takes me a few seconds to realize that this was a mutual friend of ours from about five years previous. in that time richie croce had put on about thirty pounds of muscle and a bad attitude. anyway, he and i had a big laugh about it, after dropping my fare i went back to the intersection, waited for him to go on a break, and we caught up on the last few years with a cup of coffee. |
Started dating this girl in 86. Learned her birthday after a few dates. It was three days before mine. On the same year. In the same state. In the same city. In the same hospital.
We were in the nursery together as newborns. Met hundreds of miles from there. Small world. I married her. God is good! |

I'm from New Zealand and was staying in a hotel in Athens. I saw a woman standing at the reception and sure enough it was girl who lives next door. So we chatted a while then I went back to the backpacker dorm room and thought I better say hello to the chick I was sharing a bunk with (I was on top) and she was my neighbor from over my back fence.

The weirdest thing that ever happened to me (in terms of chance encounters) was during by college undergraduate degree. I was walking to the bus stop from my apartment about 1/2 a mile away when an Army recruiter's vehicle stops right in front of me and a female in the passenger seat rolls down her window and says, "Hello, Lane, how are you doing?"
This freaked me out since I didn't recognize her at all, we chatted for about 20 minutes and she asked about my mom and my dad, my sister and my brother, even my dog. To this day I still don't know who the hell she was. She knew everything about me and I didn't even know her name. |
These types of things are amazing when you consider how many of us are on this mudball. Pretty cool!!

Two things:
When I bought my Tristar, but hadn't gotten it from ther importer yet, I saw my first one in person driving down the road near home. I yelled to the driver, "I just bought one of those!" Turns out he was a guy I grew up with but hadn't seen since high school in 1978. There are only about 10 in California. Another wierd one: I went to Europe for 2 months with my friend Dave. We first went up to Norway, where I met this nice Norwegian girl who was also travelling around. Dave got tired of being a third wheel, so he went on his own, saying he'll see me at the airport when we fly home in 2 months. Whatever. I don't know where Dave went, and I had no real plans myself. After a week when she had to go home, I decided to go to Portugal. And that's where I just happened to find Dave at a sidewalk cafe, in the Algarve. |

Here's a coincidence- 10 years ago I attended a conference at a resort in the Thousand Islands, up on the St Lawrence River on the US/Canada border. As the sign-in sheet came around, (and back then it was common to use your social security number as an id), I noticed a ss # only 1 off from mine and ended in 7338, mine ends in 7339- all the other numbers were the same! Turns out the lady with that number has the same exact birthday as me, and grew up in a city next to mine. She applied for working papers the same day(to be a waitress) as I did(to work in a supermarket) as I did and also applied for the SS card the same day(the birthday). We are still friends. A small world indeed.

I'm comforted by knowing that these weird things happen to you folks too!
