So new cars aren't selling: what & where are the deals?

I overheard a conversation that brand new top-shelf Chevy Silverados crew-cabs are selling for less than $20K in L.A. I don't know anything about pick-up truck prices, but it made me wonder what other "good deals" are out there in this economy.

Cars I'd be interested in:

1) Mini Cooper S
2) BMW 335 sedan
3) Mercedes Benz C-300 or C-350
4) Subaru Outback (for practicality reasons)
5) Diesel variants of any of the above - if possible.

Has anyone been to a dealer lately to see if the prices have fallen or if buyer incentives have been applied to these or other cars?

Nope...but at least you have a list. I subscribe to C&D and R&T. Read the tests and yawn. Only cars featured in HOT ROD turn me on...like one in the latest...a guy in Portland, OR...a '63 Impala that's all Z-o6 other than the body...cool!

Silverados aren't selling well because of recent $4 gas. While the industry as a whole has slowed, gas hogs have been hit the hardest, hence the fire sale pricing. Everything else you named is fairly economical. You won't find the same price cut on a 30 MPG Mini Cooper as you will a Silverado. I think the biggest bargains are found in the truck and SUV market.

With that said, there are a number of companies offering 0% financing or incentives right now. Toyota is offering 0% on everything, which was previously unheard of.

There are many huge factory to dealer incentives out right now. Not sure on the 335 or C class though. I do know the 08 MB E-Class has an $8,000 factory to dealer incentive. That can make the car pretty attractively priced, if you can get an E350 for $10K off sticker, that isn't bad.

(Of course, even with huge discounts, new cars are still a bad deal. For ex., even with $10K off, an E350 will go out the door for close to $50K and be worth $25K - or less - in 3 years).

Yeah, a neighbor bought a 3-yr. old E 550 w/ AMG appointments for $27K. Hell of a deal/hell of a car.

If I had a supply of mini pick-ups (80's/early 90's Toyota/Nissan) I could make a fortune right now. People stop me all the time and ask about my '95 Toyota.

Try shopping for one. An early '90s Toyota 4x4 extra-cab in decent shape with 200k miles is a $6k truck right now.

I found mine on the "back lot" of a used car dealership. Dirty, rough-running, squeaky A/C. Dealer was trying to steer me toward something newer/expensive. I said "Nope...I want that one.". $2500.

Removed the bird/rat nest from the air cleaner box, tightened the A/C belt, power-washed the engine compartment. Bingo. I'm certain I could sell it for $4k right now.

This isn't "mini-truck" territory, so they are tough to find. However, with all the full-size pick-ups I see with "For Sale" signs on them, the writing is on the wall. All these pick-up folk are going to need something for hauling/working.

An 06 would be an E500, but yeah, $27K for an 06 E500 is about right.

I know of a mint condition one owner 05 E500, still under factory warranty for a year or so, all original paint, etc. for sale for $22.5K. E500s are great deals, they were top of the line and get pretty much the same real world gas mileage as the 6 cylinders.

I was talking to son#1 yesterday about his quest to buy a new, bottom of the scale, economy type car for no more than $20K. In the Danbury. CT area he looked at Audi, VW, Subaru and Chevy Malibu. He couldn't get any attention in the first 3 dealerships(he actually had to take a number to see a sales person!) Best deal he could get was a whopping $1,000. off list for a Jetta. The showrooms were full of shoppers, and no deals whatever, except for gas hogs. He checked out the Malibu, and there were no entry level cars, only loaded ones. He gave up, went home and shopped Ebay, and found a Jetta Wolfsburg, 2008, and bought it for $18,000., 4,000 miles. Some gal in Stamford needed to unload it. And Volvos, forget about it, nothing under $30.

Nickg, I will pass that on to my son, but I think the Jetta from ebay will be in his driveway in a day or so.

Any V-8 powered vehicle will definitely be discounted...

I took the opportunity this summer to sell our 2003 Focus Wagon with 50K miles on the odo, for $8k. I then purchased a 2004 Toyota Sequioa Limited (leather, power everything, sunroof, tow package, heated seats, seating for 8) with 60k miles for $12,800. Believe me, stepping up to a loaded Toyota Sequioa from a fairly pedestrian Ford Focus Wagon for only an additional $4,800 is saying something! The Focus new in '03 was a $20k car; the Toyota new in '04 was a $37,000 car...I'm still stoked about the whole deal.

I heard Minis are sold out and they're only taking orders for new cars.

Brand new? A 2008 off the lot? If so, that's a fantastic deal. They're selling above MSP in San Fernando Valley, and guess what - there's tons of them on the lot, gathering dust.

Yep, got a month ago at Rusnac in Arcadia. It was an easy deal, I walked in told how much I'd pay and they said yes. Three other Mercedes dealers turned down the same deal.
