T & a

Tonsillectomy & Adenoids. And a Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty for good measure.
Oh yeah, and they're going to break my nose and put it back to the way it was before I broke it years ago.

I am going to have a 'little' work done to resolve my sleep apnea. I go in Monday morning, and spend Monday night in the hospital. I'm supposed to be out of work for a week, but I think I'll be working from home before too long.

I can't wait to breath again.

masraum 10-30-2008 11:54 AM

Sounds like Fun!!!

Good luck.

Schumi 10-30-2008 12:05 PM

I had Adenoids removed long ago. Now every now and then, when I go swimming, I can suck water in my ears and down my throat :-/. Oh, and extremely cold liquids make my ears feel funny.

126coupe 10-30-2008 12:12 PM

I had my Adenoids, Toncils, Uvala(sp), septom and a larger airway carved in my airway about 12 years ago to cure sleep apnea.
I stopped snoring because I lost 25 pounds from not being able to eat for 2 weeks.
I am at my regular weight and I still snore, wifey and I sleep in separate bedrooms.
went back to a different ears, nose and throat guy and the previous surgery was successful:mad: they recommended a mask hooked up to a compressor, no way.
Its a brutal surgery, lots of liquid vicodin:D

id10t 10-30-2008 01:10 PM

Minkoff - the CPAP mask is worth its weight in gold... and then some. Took me about 3 nights to get used to it, now when I have to sleep without it I realize just how bad off I was w/o it.

Ditto that. I'll never fly without it.

I did lose 90 lbs. in the last year to get to my fighting weight, and the docs thought I might be able to ditch the CPAP...but no such luck. No biggie though, I'm used to it anyway.

I tried so hard to use it, I ended up throwing it across the room and retreated to my own bedroom:mad:

So.. is the bouncing cpap machine for sale? I'm a hose head. Hate it, but hate not getting any restful sleep worse.

I have an extra. Resmed S8 Escape, used 1 year. Got upgraded to an auto-titrating unit. Make offer.

I was using it on a trial basis, how can anyone stand the constant humming sound I will never knowSmileWavy

island_dude 10-30-2008 03:58 PM

The UPPP really sucks. It was a nasty recovery and it actually made the apnea worse. I went from a mild to moderate. I am now dependent on the machine more than I ever was before the surgery. This seems to be a very common occurrence. I wish you the best, but I hope that your outcome is better than mine.

crustychief 10-30-2008 03:58 PM

I had a septoplasty in August and lost 22LBS in two weeks, from not being able to eat, they gave me two weeks from work but I didn't think that was enough. Good luck.

pavulon 10-30-2008 04:00 PM

I believe a relationship b/w obstructive sleep apnea and sudden death has been established.

come to think of it my recovery was probably longer than 2 weeks. my wife was about to kill me, I was very grumpy............more vicodin mixed w applesauce.....Yuk

island_dude 10-30-2008 07:11 PM

The recovery was rough. The first ten days were just hell. Lots of drugs that made me dopey. Two years later, I still can't eat stuff as hot I used too. It was really something like 5 weeks before I was 100%. At 2 1/2 I was pretty functional but tired easily.

126coupe 10-30-2008 07:25 PM

I still, 12 years later get bread stuck in the 5th dimension

billyboy 10-30-2008 08:48 PM

Have fun!

I had a rhinoplasty for a broken nose that healed crooked and closed on one side. I had it the day before thanksgiving. This was years ago when my kids were little. I had to lay on the couch for several days being tortured by that stupid movie called "Annie' which they watched over and over. The recovery from the nasty drugs that they knocked me out with was the worst part, well except for the snot bubbles that kept forming at the ends of the plastic tubes that were left sticking out of my nostrils.:p

71T Targa 10-31-2008 06:06 AM

This is sounding better all the time. :D

That is funny as heck! I almost lost coffee through my newly renovated septum! The roof of my mouth is still numb from it and it feels like someone is pushing in on my nose all the time. I didn't get Vicodin but had oxycontin? is that the same?

pavulon 10-31-2008 05:36 PM

oxycontin is considerably more potent....

island_dude 11-01-2008 03:59 AM

I have Roxacet (or something like it). It was a really potent liquid. I have to say that it really did the job. When it wore off it was not funny how painful it was. For the early period I would wakt up in the middle of the night after the meds had worn off and I would have to wait for the new dose to kick in. You could actually feel the pain dropping away. What pain it didn't manage, you didn't care about anyway. I was super happy when I could get off of it though. It affected me in lots of ways that I didn't realize. During the whole time I was on it, guitar practice was hopeless. My fingers didn't go where I intended them too. Fortunately, it was only about ten days before I was off of it completely.

pavulon 11-01-2008 04:18 AM

Roxicet is liquid Percocet (oxycodone and acetaminophen)

You need to get that punctured ear drum repaired

Getting tonsils done as an adult is a brutal experience, stay hydrated, take lots of narcotics

M.D. Holloway 11-01-2008 06:23 PM

Had the same thing done6 years ago. Is the Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty a uvulectomy? I had it cut out and be prepared to be very very sore. I didn't eat for a week - only drank. I lost 18 pounds!

Good luck!

Tobra 11-01-2008 10:35 PM

When my wife had that done, a clot broke off when she coughed a week after surgery and she bled out a fair amount. Was well into triple digits in my integra on the way to the ER. They cauterized it again, we left and she went to surgeon, an air cooled VW guy, the next day. He took one look at her, told her to go back to the hospital. Gave her 3 liters of fluid starting a fourth when she finally peed, she was so dehydrated

dentist90 11-01-2008 10:56 PM

I've only seen a couple of these. It certainly helps with the snoring. With lasers now (and electrosurgery) the bleeding is usually more controlled. The trick as I see it is to remove enough of the posterior soft palate to make it more difficult for your tongue to seal off your airway, but not so much that your beer comes out your nose every time you take a swig! Roto-rooting your nose will hopefully allow you to sleep with your mouth closed. You are going to have the mother of all sore throats (you will not be swallowing pills for at least a week). Good luck dude.

What? How does it get through your eardrums?

Schumi 11-02-2008 01:49 AM

It's very small, like a drop or two, but I have noticed it on more than one occasion. I get water creeping past my eardrums. I can also have water in my mouth and lay down/upside down and feel it creep into my middle ear.

I had my Adenoids removed because they became inflamed and were much larger than they were supposed to be and staying that way. After they were taken out the void caused the Eustachian tube to enlarge I believe, and therefore the connection between my throat and ears is rather open. My voice dropped about a whole note immediately after surgery.

71T Targa 11-02-2008 12:17 PM

It looks like I'll be checking in at 6:30am tomorrow morning. The closer this gets, the more I am dreading it.

island_dude 11-02-2008 06:29 PM

Just go with the flow. Stay on top of your meds and you should be ok. With any luck you will benefit from it, but don't set your expectations very high. UPPP is not a reliable cure for Apnea. It did stop my snoring, and I seem to get very few colds anymore. Keep us posted on your progress

dentist90 11-02-2008 07:36 PM

... and posts pics!! (Ewwww...)

island_dude 11-03-2008 04:26 AM

One last thing: Don't breath near anything living, it won't stay that way. You will have breath direct from Mordor for weeks.

BertBeagle 11-03-2008 05:17 AM

Going on 11 years ago I discovered that what I had was sleep apnea. The doctor told me that he could do surgery but that it was only a 50% chance that it would cure the problem. He said that if I could use the cpap machine the cure was 100%. I chose the machine and he was right. In over 10 years I have never spent a night without it.

If you have sever sleep apnea you can very easily use the machine and you will love it to the extent that you will never sleep again without it. Its life threating to sleep without it. If your case is not so bad then I can see how you might not like it.

I think sleep apnea is like getting braces in that you go to some doctors and they will say you have it if you snore a little - like they use to put braces on just about every child whose parents drug them to see the orthodontist. Problems with the medical profession...but thats another topic.

71T Targa 11-10-2008 08:44 AM

Well it's been a week, and I am still pretty much worthless. I can breath so much better, and my nose is straight, but my throat burns like I never thought possible. I'm taking some good drugs every 4 hours that I'm awake, and sleeping a lot. I thought I'd be going back to work today, but that is not going to happen.

dentist90 11-10-2008 06:22 PM

Just gargle with hot shards of glass every couple of hours to make it feel better. ;)

You really are a dentist... :D

dentist90 11-10-2008 09:03 PM

Busted. I'm sure it does feel worse than the shards of glass. It's all relative. I drink coffee to calm down :)
