Who else skis (or snowboards)?

Looks like Saturday Nov 1 just might be my 1st day out this year. Either Killington or Mt Sneaux if the rumors and temps are legit. Wherever we go, it will surely be a white ribbon of death.

I ski. Fischer Watea 78s for the woods/pow/bumps/crud and RX8s for the groomers.

If I do make it out on saturday, it will be my earliest start since I was a college sophmore (Oct 22 1997, Sugarloaf).

Getting seriously stoked...trying to focus on work and NOT keep checking the killington peak web cam. :D

Big Ed 10-30-2008 11:34 AM

Mt Snow is operating? That's not far enough north of me to hardly believe...

serge944 10-30-2008 11:38 AM

Sierra Mountains are still dry. :( I try to put in about 30 days a season. All my skis are already waxed and ready to go.

deathpunk dan 10-30-2008 11:48 AM

Mt Snow has been blowing snow since last night, killington since 5 am wednesday.

Most excellent. I'm busy this w/e, but if weather holds I'd go next week.

badcar 10-30-2008 12:31 PM

4 days so far this season on the white strip of death at A Basin. Would be doing more, but it has been damn warm here in CO.

Atomic Crimson Ti skis weapon of choice for normal everday...Volkl Gotamas when we start the real winter here in Jan/Feb.

Yup, but I'm going up to Tahoe for a full week the last week of January. Did it last year and the conditions were great....well, except for one day when it was blizzard conditions. I had taken a three year layoff (for various reasons) and absolutely had an epiphany. I was skiing better and faster than I ever had and on more challenging runs. I don't know what it was.

I had never even tried skiing until I met my girlfriend and she took me. I was like 45 and was delighted to find I was actually good at something I had never tried before. I didn't expect to like it much or to be good at it. Now, I'm 53 (54 in a few weeks) and skiing better than ever.

Tim Hancock 10-30-2008 01:51 PM

Only a few times a year nowdays. Back when I skied alot and worked at a ski shop, I went thru a couple pairs of Elan RC Comprex S's at 200 length. A few years ago I made the switch to current technology with a pair of K2 Axis X's in what at the time seemed like ridiculously short 167's. I am 5'8" and live in the bumps when I do still ski, but my legs don't last as long as they used to. (I guess that is the difference between being in my 20's and being 42)

VINMAN 10-30-2008 03:51 PM

Long way to go before we have ski conditions around here. Although we did get snow here tuesday. Closest area is Mountain Creek up in North Jersey. Last year sucked. Only got out a few times.
I need to update my skis soon. My neon K2's are about 15 yrs outdated.:D

tangerine911S 10-30-2008 05:11 PM

Killington isnt open. I live in Rutland about 10 minutes from the mtn. They are planning on opening Nov 14th. Mt snow has only one trail open but you have to hike it. I wouldnt bother I guarantee it sucks.

9dreizig 10-30-2008 05:28 PM

I moved west pretty much just to ski... Season passes at Kirkwood and Mt Rose..
Hey maybe we could put together a Lake Tahoe Pelican Ski day ??

slodave 10-30-2008 06:10 PM

I ski. Mammoth (Sierras) actually does have snow! Just not enough to ski on.

tc-sacto 10-30-2008 06:25 PM

Tahoe getting snow tonight but expect we won't be skiing until mid December. Ski 20-30 days Squallywood or Sugarbowl. Weapon of choice Line prophet 100 or Head monster 75.

Pelican Tahoe day would be fun.

billybek 10-30-2008 06:31 PM

Some of the best skiing in North America at our doorstep in Calgary.
I bought some Rossi Zenith Z5 a couple of years ago. Great skis, they do everything pretty well. Now it is time to get some boots that I don't have to unbuckle every 3rd trip up the chair.
I can still crank a run through the bumps, just not all day....

HardDrive 10-30-2008 07:13 PM

I used to ski like mad when I was younger. Nasty accident on Mt. Bachelor in Oregon 15 years ago. 2 ruptured disks. Not walking right for 4 months.

I can still ski, but it just seems like a hassle......:(

"supported" myself through 4 winters instructing skiing and snowboarding--even got my PSIA certification to make it official---thank God for free crackers/cheese dip at the snack bar or I may have starved.

RKC 10-31-2008 06:37 AM

Checking the Telluride webcams every few days. Nothing yet.....

Try to get out West a few times a year, and around the midwest when things are right...

not in the last 2 yrs, my last runs took me to Utah.
While stationed in Germany..every weekend.
and the Hintertux (Austria) glacier ..every 4th July
As for gear...PX made this stuff dirt cheap.
Between my lady and self...
10 pair ski's,5 pair booth's,at least 20 pr gloves..
my motto...
go as fast as your willing to crash..
tested this concept in Utah ,
while laying there..ok..your hands & feet still wiggle,
O my..white gloves turning red..
yellow tunic at elbow's doing same..
X-ray's negative, my body was spitting gravel for a yr.

snowboarding since 1985. i ride a 1991 burton air, just got new boots two seasons ago to replace the sorels. i purchased a never used 1997 burton factory prime (same board used in the olympics in the late '90's) and some head hard boots for this season. i can't wait to switch it up mid-day when the groomed runs are all carved up.

Dave L 10-31-2008 11:11 AM

My first day last year was November 23rd and my last was April 2nd, I went out 27 times with a highlight of snowboarding at Squaw for the first time. This year I should make it out more often as I got a membership at a hill 30 minutes away. I am also planning on a trip to Tremblant with my wife and hopefully a trip out to Banff with a buddy of mine.

From what I've heard ticket prices are 65 dollars for adults.....not worth it for one or two "trials" that are just WROD.

Had an S.O.S college pass last season and made it out 24 times with a combo of skiing and boarding. I'm going to get a Wachusett bronze pass and a Sunapee/Gunstock/Wildcat college pass this year and have four day trip over spring break planned for Stowe with my dad. Hoping to get at least 30 days this season.

I'm only about 20 minutes from Wachusett and I've never skied there. How is it? I typically hike to Mt Snow, but the Wachusett Bronze pass at $199 is enticing.

Busy all of the time, which also means that the snow can suck and the lines at the lifts suck and the lodge is always packed and the slopes are filled with gapers. Other wise its not bad and its a great place to take someone who is learning how to ski or ride. I'm mostly getting the bronze pass because I'm in college and can get one for $129 and will have a lot of free time to ski/ride at night and during the weekends I go farther north so the no weekends restriction on the bronze pass doesn't bother me. It will also be nice to have somewhere close by to make some morning turns on the weekdays if my class schedule allows next semester. The trails aren't that bad, mostly groomed cruisers without much character and with two high speed quads you can rack up some decent vertical if there aren't any lines.

Big Ed 11-06-2008 12:33 PM

Any of you New England guys skiied Stratton in recent years? I haven't been there since the 80's. Worth a trip this winter?

}{arlequin 11-06-2008 12:50 PM

used to ski stratton in the 90's... used to be my favorite 'single mountain' resort, but the quaintness that appealed to me may be gone by now.

the 11-06-2008 01:36 PM

Skier since the early 80s, snowboarder for the past 2 seasons.

Went there a day last year. Most of it seemed to be intermediate groomers. Lots of uphill capacity with all the six packs, but it sucks that the only way to the top non stop is the gondola. Compares well to Okemo but with more stuff for the non-skier wife at the base, it also seemed like Okemo has more character, but that just might be because I've logged a few more days there.

You mean Flatton ??? Waste of time and money,, intermediate at best and WAY overpriced ( most expensive in the country I believe). Save your money for a hotel and go to Jay, or Cannon, the only hills in New England worth skiing..
Not that I ski the east anymore but my 2 cents

nynor 11-07-2008 08:05 AM

from the stratton web page:

Stratton Mountain, Vermont is committed to delivering the best skiing and snowboarding experience in New England. Fourteen lifts including a high-speed base-to-summit gondola and four six-passenger lifts, 90% snowmaking, 2003 feet of vertical.

that is almost the same vertical as solitude here in utah. not bad.

Uhm clearly you've never skied/ridden there,, to compare Flatten to Solitude is a joke... Oh and you can't get a $20 burger at Solitude,, but you can at Flatten!! LOL

rcm 11-07-2008 08:21 AM

I have a mountain in the backyard basically. PLus, I work for Tecnica/Blizzard. Ready for snow. All this talk about snowmaking it's 60 in Lebanon, NH. right now.

9dreizig 11-07-2008 08:32 AM

RCM, I lived in Lebanon for almost 9 years ( on Poverty Lane) and was one of the founders of Creonics ( not there anymore on Etna Road).. kids learned to ski at Whaleback

Cdnone1 11-07-2008 08:49 AM

I grew up skiing in Ontario.
700 hundred feet elevation. If you could read a terrain maps thru 6 inches of blue ice we considered that "machine groomed". A nice day was only 30 below zero with the 40 mph wind coming off the lake.
I moved to LA 23 years ago and I sure do like skiing here better
