I'm Going To Ca$h Out My 401K and Invest In BMW 2002!!!

Another 2002 that will hit an easy $30K, granted this is a genuine and ultra clean Turbo that has the ultra rare Alpina wheels and unbelievable factory power sunroof!! The last one we talked about on here sold for $34K (if I remember). I cannot believe the big money these cars are bringing, I think its great.

As an aside I have seen ultra clean Datsun 510s bringing in over $25K!!

One of my all time faves...even the basic non-turbo 2002s are fantastic. Hell, even the non-TI models are sweet!

I had a '73 TI that was a complete basket case. I traded a built-up Type One Beetle engine for it. At the time, I was a poor college student and ran out of places to store the damn car (I think all of my friends and family disowned me when I tried to call in favors). I had such restoration plans for that car! No matter how strong my death grip was, I had to let it go! I probably traded it for a case of Castrol GTX to feed my 23 window Bus!

Looked at that car above, and I'm pretty sure I'd trade my beloved 930 for that example!

Jeff – The 2002 cars have a definite and certain raw appeal to them. I have had the good fortune to have driven in a 2002 Turbo, as a good friend is a huge BMW collector and he imported one from Germany a few years back. I will say that the car is great to look at and classic lines. In terms of power I was not sure what to expect, but when he nailed it, the car was “brisk” at best, I would say it would run to 60mp/h in 7secs, so not neck snapping. The 4 cylinder sounds very harsh as it is being wrung through the rpm range as well.

To be honest the 930 is definitely several leagues above the 2002 Turbo and so it should be, better performance, much smoother, more comfortable, much more civil etc etc. For the price this particular 2002 Turbo will bring (I estimate over $30K) I would rather have a nicely sorted and modified 930.

Still great and fascinating cars none the less.

A peak at my friend’s BMW collection, yup that’s a genuine low mileage M1 in there, infront of a low mileage 850CSI (plus all the other goodies in the background) and my 930 in the foreground:

What would something like this have sold for, say five years ago?

Are you telling me that M1s actually exist?

I remember reading about them (probably still have an old magazine with an article), but never have actually seen one, or heard of anyone who has seen one!

How many were produced? How many are in the U.S.?

Wasn't Wayne looking to purchase one?

Yes, an ugly one with a fake racing body kit.

Sadly, in the current climate investing in rare old cars might actually be a better investment than stocks. It's certainly more fun. Think I can sell my wife on that idea?

Took the 930 out at lunch today and gave her a well deserved pistol whipping! Yep, I think I've put those car trading notions to rest!

No idea on production numbers, but they do exist. My shop had one in the lot for literally years. They were doing a light resto on it, which wasn't bad, but they had to wait about 2 years to get a head gasket set from Germany.

Can tell you that thing was auditory joy when it fired up. Straight-six MFI goodness. Headers were a work of art.

2002's are great... Comfy, reliable, large trunk area... easy to work on, easy on the eyes... just not alot of performance....at least from my experience. But truly one of the best cars ever made... good to see that they are starting to get the respect that they deserve. Most old school BMW owners know that it was the 2002's popularity that helped get BMW noticed in the US and paved the way for the 320i etc..... Wish I still had mine... wonder where she is today.....

As far as the M1's go, wish they would have been mass produced so that I could of had the oppurtunity of owning one.... well there is always winning the lottery I guess.... Have considered the 850, but figure parts will be hard to find like the 733 and 735 I had....

Slow and Rusty-

I would not estimate the "value" on these cars based on what you see on EBAY. I am no BMW expert or even enthusiast for that matter but always liked an old friends 2002. When the last one came up on this forum I thought the pictures showed it to be an exceptional example and I watched it daily. After speaking with my wife we thought we might make a run at it if it was in the mid to high teens near the auction end and possibly end up with a bargain, as we sure do not need another car to never drive.

Anyway long story short the bidding went from 18ish to 32 in one bid. The auction stated that he needed a race motor quick and this thing was going for no reserve. I never watch EBAY so I do not know if this type of thing is the norm but I would have to suspect that a friend of the seller or perhaps the seller himself bid at the end to trigger someones auto bid in order to get what he needed out of the car. Don't get me wrong, 32 was fair for this car but I find the bid pattern a bit unbelievable. I saved the file so I could have the pictures in case I ever came across a good donor car one day. I loved the little black one, he had done a great job. You can still find it (270271173392), check the bid history,

Cool pics Santa Barbara Steve.

BMW make some great cars, those pics are proof. 2002s, M6s, CSLs to name a few.

The 270hp in the M1 is a beautiful sight to behold and the most melodic engine even at idle. The headers are work of art by themself.

The M1 is to BMW, what the Miura is to Lamborghini.
