Finally Drove my Trans Am

After getting the title over a month ago, after being sick, I finally picked it up on Tues, and it sat on the trailer until today as I have had a few big gigs going on, so this afternoon, I fired her up and ran her around the block a few times:D
Well, there are black marks in the street & I wasn't even trying :D
All I can say is this thing is a hoot to drive:D
Time to start growing a mullet :p

speedracing944 11-02-2008 07:59 PM

Is it a Smokey and the Bandit type of TA?

Speedy:)

:( No, an 89 GTA, but there is a guy on the TA board wanting to trade me a silver 78.

Ride height seems a little high... :p

Porsche_monkey 11-03-2008 07:12 AM

I guess I'd be willing to get behind the wheel and try it. But only because the windows are tinted. :)

Wow. I don't think I've ever seen a '78 that wasn't black with a gold chicken on the hood.

URY914 11-03-2008 09:59 AM

Just in time for the FL/GA game.

onewhippedpuppy 11-03-2008 10:00 AM

Wait until a few people talk trash, then challenge them to a race.;) The GTA is one of the all-time ultimate sleepers.

berettafan 11-03-2008 10:40 AM

is that the 4 banger turbo model?

onewhippedpuppy 11-03-2008 10:48 AM

V6 turbo, I believe a 3.8L related to the Grand National. I'm sure Byron will correct me if I'm wrong. I think the tested 0-60 time was 4.8 sec, pretty good for 1989.

berettafan 11-03-2008 10:53 AM

ah, v6. i knew it was the GNX type power plant that was shared (or just GN). Neat stuff.

No, the Vett engine, this thing is stock right down to the radio:D I hope to have a chance to really play with it next weekend:cool:

You are correct sir, fastest American car, even faster than a Vett. A friend had one that I could have picked up a few months ago for $2,500, but I had too many irons in the fire. He bought an SS and just parked it.

911boost 11-03-2008 10:55 AM

Cool, so you ended up getting it. Nice.

onewhippedpuppy 11-03-2008 11:03 AM

Those Smokey & The Bandit style TAs seem to be really headed upwards in price. I always thought they were cool, in a white trash sort of way.;)

What? My friend had a brand new one in highschool Not really sleeper material. Don't get me wrong it was fine but not hardly the stock looking vega with a small block Oh and I had a 77 in high school with a mullet

81turboporsche 11-03-2008 01:55 PM

my best friend had an 87 black one with the fully electronic dash ,thing was awesome and part inspiration on buying an 01ws6, he misses that thing but he went through 2 trasmissions and 3 rearends in it,great car

81turboporsche 11-03-2008 01:56 PM

Yes, it does, I didn't know about it the first time I opened the hatch:p

81turboporsche 11-03-2008 02:16 PM

yea that little gimmick gm threw in their you have to close it almost then let the motor pull it in ,pure 80s redundancy, its too bad all of the gtas came in automatic but at least they were mated to the 350 tpi motor and not the weak 305

peppy 11-03-2008 03:04 PM

My room mate in college had one. He had a notchback with a five speed and the 305.

That engine was only available on the Indy Pace Car.

Does the front work the same way?? Mine didn't pop, then it was up:confused:

I really needed another car like I needed a hole in my head:eek:

I stand corrected, I thought the turbo V6 was available in the GTA.

No the front does not work the same.

I always like those cars. I have seen an 1989.5 that had T-Tops and the 350.

Tobra 11-03-2008 07:32 PM

not bad, a maroon KITT, you did not buy it from a dude named Michael did you?

slakjaw 11-04-2008 05:27 AM

Nice!

Joe Ricard 11-04-2008 06:50 AM

the V6 Turbo was faster than the V-8 car.
BTW it is highly desireable in the anniversary edition. One hell of a car.
Butt ugly and pretty fast.

Racerbvd 11-15-2008 07:11 PM

This thing was a blast at the track, nothing like throwing 4,000lbs of American muscle around a road course:D

Porsche-O-Phile 11-15-2008 07:56 PM

I owned a '78 Formula Firebird for a while. All I can say is "DON'T". Even for a T.A. You're on crack to even consider ANY American-made car from the 70s. Trust me on this. The day that thing went to the big junkyard in the sky was one of the happiest for me. Infernal P.O.S. rust can.

81turboporsche 10-28-2009 05:44 AM

theres my old one sold it in feb 07 and one week later bought the 911

I had the same exact car, but in silver.

fastfredracing 10-28-2009 09:31 AM

My ex girlfriend had one of those in white , around 91/92. It was a cool car for its time. The old tune ports did run pretty good. I cut my teeth on camaro's/ and corvette's. Still kind of like the gta, would not mind having one in my stable. They do burnouts a lot better than 911's

Boy, you got that right!!!! All you have to do is put it in gear....

azasadny 10-29-2009 04:27 AM

My friend has a '96 Trans Am and he drove it to the Tail of the Dragon in Sept when I drove my MazdaSpeed3. His car handled the twisty roads just fine...

masraum 10-29-2009 04:39 AM

They are so much cleaner looking than the last couple of years of TA and Firebird.

TSNAPCRACKLEPOP 10-29-2009 12:23 PM

mine was an 89 Iroc Camaro, 350tpi. did run good. I saw a pontiac like that one somewhere recently....i need to strat a book with the location of all the cars i spot.

TSNAPCRACKLEPOP 10-29-2009 12:28 PM

kmhemi 10-29-2009 12:53 PM

The GTA is quick. A buddy of mine had one.

m21sniper 10-29-2009 02:17 PM

They're not really fast when stock- perhaps quick, but they do sound good. The aftermarket chip and a good cold air intake and free breathing exhaust system did wonders though. I had those mods to mine. It used to trounce stock Trans Ams of the same era.
