Thinking Sig 556 in the AR-15 dept. Other ideas?
I want a Sig 556. It just looks like a fantastic gun. Lots of guns in that segment. I want quality. Ideas? Anyone have an Armalite?

Yeah, they're pretty cool. But they grow on trees. Buy all the .223 you can afford and worry about the rifle later.
There are several versions of the 556. There's the SWAT model with a folding stock, some are optics ready, some are not. They're very cool and a decent price. But you can drop some money getting it set up with optics. A neighbor in VA had one and he had to do some kind of mod. to keep the expended brass from dinging up the part of the upper receiver just aft of the ejection port. I figured I wanted to wait another year or two until all the bugs were worked out of these. They're still relatively new. I did get to shoot a full auto 552 a few years ago. Very badas$ gun. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1225769276.jpg |
I bought my Colt AR15 this past spring, but I may buy the Sig in a year or two, if it's still available and legal...

ATR-1. FAL based design, uses a lot of FAL parts, takes AR mags.
|
SIG 556 takes AR mags too.

The ergos on the SIG aren't as good as the AR design. The SIG feels bulky and the fore end is very plasticy and bulky. The AR design is ubiquitous and they are everywhere with excellent parts availability.
I bought the DPMS AP4 LR 308 and plan on buying the 5.56 version for three gun competition. I wanted the power of the .308 first. My $0.02. Troy |

I've been looking at AR's for a while, way to many options/versions for a novice like me.
|
I just went down the street to my local AR specialist and purchased a DPMS flat top with gas block/picatinny rail, collsible stock, and 16" heavy barrel. I will put my Eotech on it and be good to go for 3-gun next Spring. He'll assemble it today and I pick it up tonight.

SIGforum has an excellent classifieds section, but the stuff there goes FAST, sometimes in less than 2 min. There are a few very good suppliers who sell there too. Glocktalk's classifieds is much larger too, but a lot of those guys only want to do in-state, face-face deals.

OK, dumb question but:
When the ban on these gets reenacted, will you 1) still be able to purchase parts for them...like internals, etc., and 2) will you ever be able to sell it privately? |
I think any ban will just affect manufacturing, which means everything already out there will be fine. I'd stock up on hi-cap. mags though. They won't be able to really ban guns, just tax ammo out of this world.

Yes, but a scope on that carry handle looks pretty silly, which means, if you can remove it, you would need a flat top upper receiver. The stock grip sucks. Try and Ergo and you'll never go back. If you want a taclight or front grip, you'll need to replace those handguards with a rail system.
|
Its an A3 handle, so it pops off, and Im getting a quick release scope mount, and the taclight mounts to the bayonet, or grenade launcher lug. I'm certainly not disputing the functionality of the add ons, i just prefer the stock look.
