Getting the dreaded prostate exam is not as bad as I have been told.

Plus I told my wife that I needed to have more sex for my prostate health.

(October, 2006)--I can hear it now: "But honey, it's good for my prostate..." The fact is that frequent sex may indeed provide prostate cancer protection. According to an 8-year study of 29,342 men ages 46 to 81, those who ejaculated at least 21 times a month reduced their risk of the disease by a third, compared with those averaging 4 to 7 times a month. Researchers speculate that the active men may be clearing potentially carcinogenic cells from the body.

If having sex five times a week sounds a bit much, well, you don't have to shoulder the full responsibility. As it turns out, men gained protection whether their efforts were with a partner or solo.

Just remember, time with your partner between the sheets may help you ward off illness, as well. "Sex increases your circulation, and that boosts your immunity and your cardiovascular fitness," says Laura Berman, PhD, a sex researcher and host of Sexual Healing on Showtime. It can also encourage the release of feel-good endorphins, which may help fend off depression and improve the quality of your sleep. Ah, the promise of a few more Zzzs--wouldn't that get any woman in the mood?

Never thought that I'd ever share this with another soul, but if this'll help allay any fear and anxiety about the procedure for the, as yet, "uninitiated" :(, WTF, here goes.

I had cultivated a monstrous fear and loathing of the infamous latex clad finger in the two weeks between making the appointment and the annual physical, during which it would be introduced to me for the first time.

The day before the exam I got really fed up with my state of mind and thought, hey, it's a simple medical exam procedure and will be over with in a few seconds, I can deal with that!

Just assuming that mindset still left me feeling uneasy because the route the finger would be taking had ALWAYS been a one-way street and I had no idea what that experience would feel like.

Well, sorta being in a somewhat scientific mindset, I did what I'd have previously dismissed as, like, totally unthinkable; I put a baggy over my finger, dipped it in Mobil-1, relaxed and stuck it up my butt.

O.K.! Now I knew what to expect. My fear and anxiety disappeared and the next morning the dreaded probing went without a hitch.

If you decide to do this, do it in the privacy of your home, not at the gas station like I did (there were some pretty upset customers, plus now I'm banned from buying gas there).

Avoid MObil-One. Brad Penn will do you...

For best results, have your prostate exam AND your PSA done by a urologist, not the general practitioner. The prostate is a moving target in the medical field as far as what is right and wrong, you need the best advice you can get. But definitely get the exam, and you might want to consider starting at 45 years old, not 50.

You're kidding about the Mobil-1, right?

I just returned from my wonderful visit.

They don't know what my problem is but they do know what it isn't. I guess I'm getting some kind of Flowmax style prescription.

But for those that worry about the exam...don't it's nothing. That's the cold-finger exam I'm talking about.

No the one you need to worry about is the scope. Eff me that sucked. They stick a camera (an early 80's Pentax SLR I think) on the end of a garden hose and cram it down your man pole for a lookie-look. Of this procedure I am not a fan.

careful of the Flomax if you are on any cardiac meds

cgarr 11-13-2008 02:15 AM

Flomax worked for me, kind of reminds me of those high pressure power washers when the pump starts to prime up, then the engine loads up and wham, Make sure to have a good hold with two hands!

generally I would say first port of call is doctor

it could be prostrate also could be diabetes, or NOTHING !

if diabetes, you will be p*ss*ing a lot of clear fluid around 3 or 4 am
if ordinary colour, yellow greeen then not diabetes

see coffee will dehydrate you, so negates the = effect of the water your drinking
unless decaf (both tea/coffee)

either way, get checked out and holla back here to let us know your ok dude!

I've been seeing all these commercials about getting up to go in the middle of the night being a symptom of an enlarged prostate and it's starting to concern me. I drink a lot of water, two cups of coffee just about every morning and have cut way back on alcohol over the last few mos. Yet, I cannot make it through the night without taking a leak at least once, sometimes twice. I always go before I go to bed and then wake a few hours later and have to go again. Then I go when I get up around 6:50 every morning. I'm 37. I go many times before lunch, as that's when I'm most full of coffee and water. Do I need to get this looked at?

What happens if you have piles (haemorrhoids) when its time for a digit exam?

My gay friends call them speedbumps. I'd suggest getting them seen too at the same time. You'll be much happier without them.
Ps Us girls all take a nasty delight in our menfolk's rectal exams:D
