Best free or share ware for reducing mp3s?
Guys and gals,
I need some help please - I have to reduce some mp3 files for a website so they load faster, but without losing the quality. Lots of free or share ware out there - what is the best to use? (not complicated and maintains quality etc). Thanks! Cheers, Lisa |

.mp3's are already small but it is common to simply .zip them to reduce without quality loss.
Try 7 zip. http://www.7-zip.org/

These ones aren't small - my friend is having trouble with people on dial up being able to load them; 2.13mb and 2.19mb. Corporate presentation stuff, not music files. Can't be zipped I think, need to be reduced so they load faster when accessed on the website.

Actually, one of these files loads as you access her site - taking forever for some people and she wants to fix that.

No such animal as compression that does not affect quality.
The more aggressive the compression the more noticeable the degradation.

Hi Lisa,
With Wavepad (http://www.nch.com.au/wavepad/masters.html), you can play around with the compression/size of the files to see how much quality you'd be comfortable trading for the size you desire. It's freeware and supports mp3 (and other) formats. I use it for the sound tracks in my attempts at Ken Burns-like slide shows. It really rocks! (The software, not my Ken Burns effect attempts ![]() -Tony Edit: Apparently it's not freeware anymore - but not too expensive (and, it really rocks ![]()
