How many civilians have shot someone or been shot by someone?

Damn laptop...should read "...been shot by someone?"

Not talking about military encounters or law enforcement situations or peppering someone on a dove shoot unintentionally.

I'll start. In 1976 while working at a liqour store I had an armed robber shoot me in the right forearm with a .25 pistol. Left a nasty scar but didn't even break a bone. I fired a .357 wildly back and in a bit of pure "luck" hit him in the back of the knee as he was trying to leave and completely destroyed his right patella crippling him for life. He did 20 years. I quit working at the store.

Only time in my life .

never shot at anyone

security guard at the gravel pits near my house shot at me with a shotgun loaded with rock salt once when I was a kid, but I was able to duck behind an adequately large eucalyptus tree and was unscathed

Shot at someone once (warning shot). Never been shot at.

My brother has been held at gunpoint once and shot at once, so I guess I'm lucky then. We do live in a very violent part of the world though.

My next door neighbor's son's friend was shot at a local gas station last winter during a robbery. He survived (barely) and it was only a few miles from our homes...

I shot the Sherriff (but I did not shoot the deputy)......

My brother got shot at when he was a NYC bus driver. He tossed a passenger off the bus. The guy shot and missed him. He quit a week later

When I was working at a parts store in Tampa years ago, I was held up by a guy with a gun, but never been shot at or shot at anyone.

Me personally? No. However a close personal friend of mine was shot and killed some years ago while he was taking out the trash at his work (McDonald's). He evidently was in the wrong place at the wrong time - he saw a car with a couple of guys hanging out in the back of the restaurant getting ready to rob the place. It's not clear if he simply tried to run back inside or whether there was some kind of struggle first (I guess only the scumbags currently rotting in prison know for sure).

I've been shot in the eye with a rock from a slingshot, shot with pellet guns and bb guns, nailed myself a few times shooting myself in the foot thru my shoe with framing nailguns, shot a 2" finishing nail thru the flesh, bone and fingernail of my thumb with a finish nailer, twice the same day. had pieces of chipping hammer larger than a 22bullet shoot into my arm so deep I could only see it when I flexed the muscle and a piece of a chisel turned me into a blood fountain when it hit a bleeder in my wrist. I have a vague idea what it might feel like. haven't been shot with a real gun yet but with my luck, it's bound to happen one day before I die. probably self inflicted doing something stupid. or not. this sheetrock guy working for me long ago had masking tape on his ribcage. asked him why and he shows me the 25cal still in him from last night's escapade with a married woman and pissed husband. he also had a 38 scar, 45 scar and what he claimed was a 50cal scar from Nam. he had been shot at least 5 times over the years. crazy mofo. a friend's wife grabbed the barrel of a shot gun, someone pulled the trigger same time and blew off her thumb and first finger.. they moved her big toe to where her thumb was.. way strange to see. found a guy next door 3 days after he blew his heart out with a 357, he was ripe.

Years ago at a bar at the Jersey shore, I got into an arguement with some guy. He followed us outside and pulled a sawed off shotgun out of his car. He said he was going to count to 10 and then shoot. We took him for his word and hauled ass. He must have been a fast counter as we didn't get too far before the shot rang out. I was hit in the lower back and thighs with several shot, as was my freind. Luckily he had bird shot loaded and we were able to continue running. Being young, drunk, and dumb, we drove home and picked what shot we could out and that was the end of that. I have a few small dimple scars and a few larger scars where we tried to dig out some of the shot.

I caught a load of rock salt in the back from a nasty farmer for playing in his barn when I was about 11 years old and then around 14 I caught a 22 round that hit the ground next to my foot and bounced up thru my shoe.
Nothing life threatening but the foot shot hurt like a biotch.

Had a pistol stuck against my nose once, talked that guy down (he was an uninvited "guest" at a party we were throwing, and realized that he had escalated things several steps to far when he did that).

Had a partner get shot in the foot by a stray bullet when i was doing some HVAC work on the Southside of Chicago.

Had a guy hanging out of the back window of a car bury several 9mm rounds in the bricks right around me after I rousted them from the bar where I was bouncing. I was hit by the chips of brick, but all of the bullets were 5 or 6 feet away from me. I was on the phone with 911 while this happened ("do you hear that?? That's them shooting at me!!"). Took 45 minutes for the cruiser to show up

Never actually been shot though.

Shot in the face on public hunting grounds when I was about 16. Took 8 pellets through my left cheek. My wife and I were both robbed at gunpoint. She in DTW at a NWA ticket office. He grabbed all the money she gave him and ran. She was unhurt. I while I was making the night drop of cash at the bank when I managed a record store in Cleveland. Never saw the guy, he held the gun to the back of my head and told me to drop the money bag. After that he said don't turn around and count to 20. I counted to about a thousand while I was pooping my pants.

grew up pretty rural surrounded by guns. never felt the need for one till i moved to los angeles.

3 a.m. and i hear pounding on my door. i open it to see my neighbor standing there with blood coming from his mouth and nose. he pushes in before i can ask what happened, saying something about needing a phone

i had lived in the building about a year. and barely knew they guy. he was just the elderly queen who wandered around the court yard in a kimono. i was aware he was going through some drama with a shirtless skin head boyfriend. looking across the way i could see him storming around the apartment, throwing furniture.

came back a minute later to peek through the drapes. saw not one but three shirtless skin heads pour out of the apartment, and turn and look at me. they were sweating n the cool night air. and moved with a jerkiness that indicated meth. i ran back to the bedroom to grab a gun. they were pounding on the door, window, and wall by the time i came back. the neighbor was now in the couch sobbing hysterically and incoherently with a police dispatcher.

i opened the door about second ahead of it getting kicked in. "where is he" the leader asked.

"he ain't here" i replied. not a particularly good response since they could see him behind me. but at this point they also noticed the gun in my hand.

there was an eerily quiet stand off for about a minute. then a bunch of them screaming "mother****er" and me cocking the gun. and then they left.

twenty minutes later some of the most bored disinterested cops i've ever seen showed up. they got the neighbor an ambulance. and thankfully never interviewed me. a few days later he was out of the hospital. and a few weeks after that had a new gangbanger boyfriend, mexican this time.

i've never shot anyone. during the whole incident, never pointed it at anyone. all i know is that it would have been a pretty ugly twenty minutes if i'd not had a gun.

I leveled a shotgun at an intruder next door in the bad part of San Francisco years ago. He was far enough away that I most likely would not have killed him if I shot. But, he wasn't so far away that I couldn't see the fear on his face and in his body language. I've never held a gun towards anyone since, but if I do, I will obey the rules that say,

"Never aim a gun at anyone unless you intend to shoot. Never shoot unless you intend to kill."

I take firearms very seriously as we all should. I disdain all the TV and films where guns are as common as cigarettes. These writers should all be put in a live fire situation to observe.

I had a shotgun pulled on me when I attacked some guys with a chain (past life - Triumph bike rider). And once while doing a hasty retreat from a party that had become very unfriendly towards white people I pulled a gun on a bunch of five guys who where going to beat the... out of me.

You think the US is bad. New Zealand (2006 statistics) was the second most violent country in the western world, second behind South Africa.
