Wow!!

SLO-BOB 11-23-2008 10:10 AM

Nice! My wife bought me one just like it.

;)

Jeff Higgins 11-23-2008 11:10 AM

I would be afraid to go hunting with a camo gun. I mean, if I ever had to set it down to, say, take a dump or something, I would probably lose it.

Nice rifles, Charles. I have to say an M1A is abou the only semi-auto centerfire rifle I would ever consider. I like the SOCOM... Didn't you show us a pic of one on the tailgate of your truck the other day?

charleskieffner 11-23-2008 02:39 PM

yes i did post a pic of "SON OF SUPER DUPER MATCH" aka meee-ster SOCOM. meee-ster SOCOM also was purchased, lierally ran home to safe and grabbed 200 rds 147 fmj's and lit 200 rds (10mags of 20) and it was handed over to arringtonaccuracy.com for a massage.

phil wanted me to wipe down factory lube, lube rifle , and shoot the snot out of it. which we gleefully did............in as much time as it takes to click "8" clicks up for 100yd zero (1"MOA = 1 click on socom vs national match sites on super duper match which are 1/2" MOA = 1 click) and then sight in for 200yds.

a little bit of change btwn the 2 bruddahs but not much. especially when ya shoot alot of 147fmj's making the transition to 168gr federals just brings groups tighter if not touching if not going thru same hole.

both of my children are fed after birthing and teething and massaging..........a strict diet of federals. unless just wasting ammo on rock squirrals or rocks.

if ya want to outshoot yer buddies next time at range do the following.........

shoot round. let barrel cool with WET shoprag from 6 packer ice chest. swab barrel with sweets 7.62. use another patch to dry. then use patch with light lube of CLP. grab barrel if cool to touch then shoot another round. repeat.

since its almost elk season for us everything at my house has focused to preparing gear. and as we all know after doing this for awhile we accumulate a ton of crap. soooooooooooo........this year...

each gun has its own case. hard or soft cases can alternate if need be., all dependant on terrain and weather. each case is self sufficient for that weapon. ie. each case has its own breakdown cleaning kits. socom has its GI cleaning kit in buttstock. all swabs/bore cleaner/lubricants/5-rd hunting mags, spare gizmos etc., specific to gun enclosed in each case. ammo enclosed in each case. all barrels either have factory muzzle cap or i cut fingers off of surgical gloves and sealed barrels to avoid mud/dirt/dust/rain/snow from entering barrels.

each weapon lubed with MIL.COMM lubricants to avoid dirt /dust retention on actions.

all sidearms have their own specific cases(rugs) with cleaning kits spares etc.

happiness is making room in your safe and finally getting it organized.

check out mcmillians folding stock mcmillian.com and click on M1-A. wayyyy coooler than other mfgs. fits socoms. you may be a traditionalist and long full stocks but folding stocks sure are handling packing in vehicles or quads.

Charles, clearly you hunt in better weather than I am used to , I gave up on those stock mounted bullet holders long ago , after an afternoon in the rain/snow the cartriges look like they have battery acid on them..
Also we always just throw some duct tape over the barrel , ,did you mention surgical gloves?? what's next condoms?? LOL

charleskieffner 11-23-2008 05:47 PM

forgot to add............if everything goes to POO with the hk-91 or mcmillian .338 ass whooper like i fall off my quad three (3) times or fall down a cliff and my rifles get hit by the burlington northern/santa fe salad bowl express(100mph) and i manage to survive despite (3) scopes being broken..........................

THE HK-91 HAS 1200 METER IRON SITES!!!!!!!

so all in all...............da bull elk this year aint gonna get away easy. they can run....but they will only DIE TIRED!

charleskieffner 11-23-2008 05:53 PM

nope ran out of condoms(i wish) surgical gloves was what i had and im lazy when it comes to cleaning duck(quack) tape adhesive off of metal.

our forecast THANK GOD..........is rain/snow starting tuesday night going possibly thru sat. snow at elevations to 9000 ft. plus or minus. was starting to get worried i was gonna be hunting in a hawaiian shirt and shorts like we did on my LAST BULL ELK HUNT ELEVEN (11) YEARS AGO! same unit same spot same date same moon.

yep took us that long to get drawn again due to arizona lottery on big 10 game tags.

opening day is friday while most are nursing viscious thanksgiving hangovers and food over indulgence.

azgfd is held in high esteem by other game and fish depts. nationwide. they are very efficient on a budget that is not paid by state coffers. all azgfd income derived from hunt/fish tags and a small % of the arizona lottery money. they literally run their ranger vehicles til the wheels fall off or they break the frames on them.

where im leading with this is in regard to your statement " i hope yer going out with one (1) round". for all semi-autos excluding ruger 10/22's, you can only use FIVE RD (5) clips/magazines. shotguns MUST be plugged to accept (3) ROUNDS ONLY. GOD HELP YOU IF YER CAUGHT OUT IN BOONIES WITH ANYTHING MORE THAN A FIVE (5) ROUND CLIP and have ANY DEAD ANIMAL ANY SPECIES IN POSSESSION!

soooooo... the technical letter of the law is FIVE (5) rds in a semi-auto with (1) ONE IN THE PIPE for a total of SIX (6) ROUNDS. if you have a clip/magazine capable of holding more than that and yer caught..............YOUR LIFE (EMPHASIS ON WORD - LIFE) will change to POO in a matter of moments when confronted by AZGFD!!!!!! ruger 10/22's you may hunt small game with larger capacity clips remingtons and marlins also.

now if you have owned a lee enfield in .303(hell of a round) you will know it has only 10 rd magazines available for it. but since its a BOLT ACTION you may carry 10 rd clips.

using a weapon that does not offer a FIVE (5) rd clip and trying to put a block of wood to disallow more rds. added is really pushing the law to the letter and your asking for trouble.

azgfd will find us/will check us/and will have everyone with a bull tag on a computer readout sheet the ranger will check off after checking tags and weapons. they are efficient as hell and SNEAKY AS HELL!

dave pender (game ranger of the year numerous years) is based out of seligman.az., one year while i was freezing my nardos off dressed like the michelin man, wind blowing sideways at 40mph, widowmaker tree branches falling out of trees, 9 degree high temps for the day, comes driving up in a new chevy z71 wearing shorts and a hawaiian shirt the first time i met him. asked me how was it going and i explained it was too windy for a fire and im freezing my nardos off and havent seen any deer yet. he then asks me for my license and tag. now thats UNDERCOVER!

thruout the state during different seasons azgfd will set up roadside STINGS, utilizing fake stuffed remote control game. it could be anything...........elk deer pig antelope bighorn sheep whatever. game will prance around in secluded area with natural bullet backdrop. game will be very enticing. this is usually started about 5 days before a hunt opens. usually setup so unethical hunters will shoot from road or vehicle. once they unload on remote control game from their vehicle or the roadway..............azgfd descends upon them like a GREEN ENEMA WITH COCKED LOCKED MACHINE GUNS and take the bad guy unethical law breaking hunter away to jail!!!!! there are numerous videos of these stings floating out there and they are comical as hell to watch. imagine a guy with any type gun...... he sees game(any species) and takes gun out of window of truck or sitting on quad and UNLOADING on animal and the animal still running around in circles or feeding and it never goes down. guys have reloaded clips multiple times and not killed RC animal and are going WTF!!!! meanwhile azgfd is descending on him like a POO TSUNAMI! hahahahahahahahaha

i hate poachers!

2 bull elk poached in unit 10 a month ago north of ashfork, az., reward up to $8000 bucks. that would sure help out my 911 engine rebuild fund!!!!!!!

FastDave 11-24-2008 06:42 AM

all this makes me wanna skip work and go fire a round... or 200 (10 clips of 20)!!! lol

lowyder993s 11-24-2008 07:07 AM

In Wyoming a few years back, we were moving along the highway from 1 side of the unit to the other. F&G has the highway blocked as 6-7 bulls move from Blactail Butte back to the Snake River Gorge...9:30 a.m. Regs state you must be 1 mile from highway to discharge firearm. Elk cross hiway, dipschits a few cars in front pull over...in front of the F&G get out and start blasting @ the Elk. Knock down 1, wound another. Could NOT believe what I was seeing...passed back thru an hour later, those guys ALL being hauled away.
If the wx is nice, the AZ DFG runs a plane at nite to check for spotlighters.
Nothing better in December than Elk chili, cold beer and football game...I'm VERY jealous!!!

charleskieffner 11-24-2008 07:18 AM

yes AZGFD ALSO use triangulation method of poachers in areas with fire towers while utilizing fixed wing aircraft. my buddies who run a garage here and werk on state vehicles all have the az. state "BIG 10" in the record books. they are dyed in the wool hunting fishing freeks. since they werk on state vehicles and are members of rocky mtn elk society, az bighorn sheep society, az varmint callers etc. they are WIRED FOR SOUND for what goes on across the state as far as game and fish infractions. thereby i get the low down about whats going on and where poachers are active.

i would give my left nut to nail a poacher. aside from the big ass monetary reward........i would be saving an animal that is just shot for its rack or backstraps left to rot.

the azgfd is asking for help with the 2 bull elk poached here recently up in ashfork,az.

all ya need is a plate number and let yer fingers do the walking to big buck nirvana. 1-800-gamethief here in az.

have run across 2 cow elk poached in same unit years ago and let dave pender azgfd officer know about it when we crossed paths.

poachers suck big time around here.

god help ya if ya poach here. they will inviscerate YOU! your vehicles, yer guns, yer camping gear, yer quads, yer trailer, your wallet and YOUR SOUL all become property of AZGFD! azgfd has some really good end of year auctions benefitting azgfd programs. lots of poachers goodies at auction prices.

Same here in Washington, and I would imagine most other states. As much as I loathe poachers, in particular the professional kind getting big racks to order or stocking resturaunts with game meat, I have to say the punishment has gone too far. It does not fit the crime, not even close. And they typically pile it on the wrong people.

We enjoy Constitutional protections against unreasonable search and siezure. Confiscating literally tens of thousands of dollars worth of property - pickup truck, trailer, or motorhome, quads, rifles, etc. definitely falls into the "unreasonable" category. One can commit a multitude of crimes that actually hurt other people, not wild animals, and get nowhere near this level of punishment.

I understand what they are trying to do insofar as targeting the "professionals". Problem is, the guys going into the woods with the sole intent of poaching do so with little gear, and cheap gear at that. A crapped out old truck and a rifle they likely wrap up and hide out in the woods anyway. A few hundred bucks, maybe, between the truck and the rifle. They can well afford such "operating losses". If they actually get caught...

The guys who really get stung by this (and there have been several here in Washington) are the guys who either make an honest mistake, or let a momentary lapse in judgement get the better of them. The former because our game laws have become so needlessly complicated (our hunting regs are now over 100 pages long) the latter because success rates here are so damn low (about the lowest in the country - 8% on elk, 20% on deer) that some folks lose all judgement when they see the bull or buck of a lifetime, and it's out of the unit, they shoot it from the road, or whatever. These folks do not deserve to lose everything they brought with them. They are not the ones the law was written for, yet they are the ones who really get nailed.

It's because they are a relatively "easy" target compared to the real pros. The real pros are almost impossible to catch - the wilderness is a big place. So the Game Department, in its zeal to appease concerned hunters and a concerned public, has to make it appear as if they are "doing something". Nothing says that like a big, well publicized siezure. Kind of like the DEA approach. It really has no affect whatsoever on poaching, but it sure looks impressive to the unwitting.

FastDave 11-24-2008 09:03 AM

I agree 100%. Too many laws enacted for the few who don't matter!

charleskieffner 11-24-2008 09:45 AM

true our laws are about a gazzilion pages and you need to have damn good eyesight to read all the damn small print.

butt poaching is bad here in arizona. true story...........boss owns section of land up in lassen, calif. his ranch hand was out one day checking on tree cutters who were clearing fire breaks and thinning trees. comes around corner and sees (2) orientals with a toyota corolla in the middle of BFE and they is 40 miles from the nearest paved road. something in his brain said things aint right and he grabbed his .44 mag. next thing orientals are running for vehicle. they are on private posted land. he draws down on them and they stop. he walks up to corolla and inside are (2) ak-47 style weapons and a freeking dead BLACK BEAR in back of seat!!!

yep going for the gall bladder. needless to say he armed himself with THEIR AK's and had the sheriff/calif game and fish respond and CORRAL THE IGNORANT POACHING ORIENTALS!

could have been real ugly. headlines read " ranch hand found dead in middle of BFE" no witness' no evidence, no nothing!

Jeff Higgins 11-24-2008 10:11 AM

Those are the guys we are after, Charles. Good job on the ranch hand's part. His alertness probably saved his life, and put a couple of crooks in jail (I hope).

So they lose a couple of cheap ass AK's and a Toyota pick up. I don't think that will slow them down much. They will be back at it when they get out. There is a lot of money in gall bladders. The truck and rifles are simply "business expenses".

What pains me is to see an otherwise honest guy lose stuff of some real value over some misinterpretation of the regs, or over a momentary lapse in judgment. Hell, we have had guys up here lose $100k+ boats over having too many salmon in the well. Or being caught with lines in the water on the wrong side of some buoy. It's just not right.

charleskieffner 11-24-2008 10:32 AM

hey 30-40,000 bucks for a freeking bear gall bladder! morons think its an aphrodisiac??????

again part of the true story about the bear and the orientals. boss went out after this happened and bought a surplus british FERRET armored 6 wheel drive vehicle for ranch hand.

i kid you freeking NOT!

so if yer up in lassen county, calif and yer in the middle of nowhere BFE and this camoflaged FERRET armored vehicle pulls up...............you will KNOW they aint screwing around ! never heard what they armed it with. boss asked for suggestions and i gave him a shotgun news showing semi-auto .50 cal ads, browning semi-auto BAR ads and my buddies literature about semi-auto hk-21's in .308.

any of the above mentioned .................will fer sure preclude you from poaching bears in their neck of the woods!

but as with most laws...........they get pretty chicken-poo about some things. example: you must SIGN your big game permit before hunting. hell its got yer name address phone blood type, mothers maiden name and blood type............why do you have to sign it or risk a violation???? beats the hell outta us.

Jeff Higgins 11-24-2008 11:10 AM

I was actually approached at work some years ago by an oriental co-worker who knew I hunted. He wanted gall bladders, and offered a grand apiece for them. I told him I wasn't interested. In retrospect, I should have gone to the WDFW and set him up. He obviously thought he could move them, so he obviously had connections. Would have been interesting to have the fish cops follow that trail.

$30-$40k? That cheap bastard. Now I really wish I would have turned him in.

One of the reasons I quit hunting in Oregon...these days, one needs to consult a Portland law firm before picking up a rod, rifle, or shotgun. The Oregon game regs booklet is many pages long now, and gets thicker every year.
