I think you should take a walk through Wal-mart. Apparently it works spectacularly well.

Everything is from China. Good and Bad.

I was just at the LA Car show and tried on some Porsche sunglasses for $169. Did they say maid in Italy or USA? Noooooo. Make in CHina!!

I could have probably bought them for $5 in China 3 weeks ago when I was there.

Seriously, not to dig at the Chinese, but they certainly do not follow the letter of the spec. They make their own decisions, often, about what will be 'close enough.'

btw, I design various products which often get made in China. Every first article is filled with their interpretation of the spec. Also, it is clear that they 'read pictures' much more than read our words (specifications).

For example, I had a client freak because his product fell apart when he was trying to show how tough it was. He was banging it against the cement and snap! .....on inspection, the assembly had a sheared rivet. --An Aluminum (or "Aruminim ") rivet, where it was clearly specified in the drawing as steel.

Not sure you can make a blanket statement about Chinese-made products. E.g. IPODs are manufactured in China. In fact, most personal computer parts are made in China. Most bike frames and components too. It depends on the build specs along with the correct amount of supervision during manufacturing. The more successful companies set up their own QC depts. to inspect the manuf. process. The more oversight, the better the end result. Unfortunately, only larger companies who produce enough volume can afford to do this.

But there are many low-tech, Chinese-made products produced to a high standard w/o oversight. I once had a low-tech Chinese-made floor jack; lasted 20+ years before it died. Guess where a lot of expensive clothes are made? China.

Marvel. Do yourself a favor and buy one of those and it will last a long time. I refuse to put one of those throw away wine cooler in a client's home.

We will be buying Chinese built cars soon! Like Audis already. That is why OEM parts are coming from China.

And maybe even a Indian built Jaguar!

What is wrong with the cooler? Can't you simply fix it?

Aurel 11-27-2008 01:49 PM

Take the wine cooler in your basement, and store the wine there. In Europe, that is what basements are made for (and they are called caves, btw.).

Yes & no. Cheapest & best are opposites in consumer goods.

As a ‘new’ manufacturing powerhouse, China has fulfilled ‘the need’ spectacularly. The need being the world’s consumer’s constant demand for cheaper & cheaper goods. Not better goods, but cheaper goods. Product longevity has nosedived along with the price. Our expectation of reliability & longevity has also plummeted because we accept it. We write it off as not worth the hassle to go through the after warranty repair process because a new one is only $xxx.

We are to blame. Not China.

It doesn't have to be pretty, just functional. This is in a large mildly heated crawl space. North wall. I put the styro all around it in the summer months & take it off in the winter. $6K + of wine here. Perfectly preserved. Some mighty fine drinking over the next 10 - 20 years.

I'll tell youif there is 6k of wine there. What are they? Burp.

Daddy has one of those. Simple up here, just block of the heat and it's cold. His is a little more 'finished' because he is a wood worker as a hobby. It also goes all the way to the ceiling. Some bottles are over 30yrs old. He use to have a lot more because his father use to make wine in his garage......damn Italians. I will see if I can get a pic.

That would last us ~ 140 days ;)

WTF is a basement?

Vipergrün 11-28-2008 11:42 AM

What exactly is wrong with the cooler? Why would you even consider having some repair man fix it? I'd be willing to bet you could source the part yourself and fix it.

Bad compressor and it lost all the freon

charlesbahn 11-28-2008 07:02 PM

Google the compressor, buy a replacement, learn to braze the pipes, but be careful because the compressor oil will catch on fire and almost burn down the house, refill with freon, and there you go, ask me how I know.
