I'm watching 'Planet of the Apes' for the first time
The 1968 original.
Let's talk about it. KT |
Amazing film. The further you progress through the sequels, the worse they get :(
|
Trek,
You know its a true story, right? |
I loved that movie.
|
I see an evolution debate looming...
So far I'm entertained. KT |
Can I spoil the ending? They're on EARTH!!! Where have you been these last 40 years Trek?? I can't believe you haven't seen it yet.
"Get your filthy paws off me you damned dirty ape!" ~C Heston |
"Why did you do that...scrape off your hair?"
Actually Charlton goes on to save the Jews from the Pharaohs :D until one day he meet Michael Moore! |

It's on Fox Movie Channel on DTV ch 258 again in 5 minutes.
I missed the first 30 minutes. I seemed to remember the Statue of Liberty ending. Somehow as a kid I just wasn't interested in anything 'ape'. I was born in 1968 I just missed it. I grew up on Star Wars instead. KT |

wait, wasn't the plague that kills all the dogs and cats supposed to have already happened |
So has *everyone* seen this movie but me???
KT |
I remember seeing it at a drive in theatre, but I was VERY young. Fell asleep in my sleeping bag in the back of the Ford station wagon. Didn't actually see the ending myself until I was a teenager.
|
I was glued to the 'small' screen back then.
Star Trek, Twilight Zone, Lost in Space, etc... KT |
I was 8 years old and in front of the big screen.
My cousins and I couldn't get over it; I'll never forget the experience, it was one of the real treats as a young boy. I've got the whole series on DVD now in my vid library. |
That chick he was with was hot.
|
Yeah it's one of my faves! Whenever AMC runs an Apes marathon, my eleven year old son and I are mesmerized by it!
I think there also was a Saturday morning Apes TV series...maybe I dreamed it? |
Omega Man and Soylent Green were my favs.

When I saw it years later as an adult, I understood that it is commentary on human culture. It's a very true story! |

The movie has a slavery, racism, class distinction, elitist, theological, scientific prehistory feel to it.
Deja Vu? KT |
I remember seeing it open at one of the old art deco theaters here in S.P.
That was back when mom would drop me and my buddies off at the theater and pick us up a couple of hours later... those were the days. And yes it had it all... slavery, racism, and the nuclear Holocaust... however at my age I was more interested in the hot chick. Each following sequel became worse at a geometric rate... fun to watch with the proper amount of alcohol... kind of like Godzilla movies. |
I was born in '62 and saw the movie. We also watched a bit of the TV series. The remake was ok, definitely had better costumes and makeup, but ultimately was not nearly as moving as the original.
"Get your filthy paws off me you damned dirty ape!" C Heston IMO one of the best movie lines ever. |

As was, and still am a huge Sci-Fi fan:p A hot homeless chick like Nova wouldn't be homeless very long;) |
I remember watching this as a kid.. me and my friends would emulate the apes when we played planet of the apes.... Somehow it always turned into a big wrestling match... This usually happened when we played super heroes also... There was this one kid that always wanted to be superwoman and wonder woman... didn't quite figure that one out till I got older....
|
I have Netflix now and watched again tonight.
Pretty interesting. |
One of my all time favorite movies.......
Got to see it on the big screen years ago at a local theater that had a cult classic night....... |
I've seen it before but just watched it with my daughter (14) this week. She loved it and was very annoyed when the credits began to roll. She wants to know the rest of the story now.
It was a fun and interesting week. Starting Wednesday she had finals in the mornings, then my wife would bring her home and after lunch we would watch a movie together for her to relax. After the movie, we would talk for a bit and then she would "hibernate" in her room studying for the next tests. All too soon she will be out of the house and I'll miss this time. |
The sequel they made a couple years ago is really, really good.
Looking forward to the new one coming soon |
I first saw it about 15 years ago and it was annotated.
- The script originally called for a "futuristic look" but they went so over budget on the costumes, they had to go with the look they had. - They employed nearly every seamstress in Hollywood making the costumes to the point of affecting other productions. - The beard comment and trusting no-one older than 30 were big nods to the kids at the time. - The ship "crashed" in Lake Powell. Bunch other stuff I don't recall. |
I would have guessed Lake Powell, yes.

I'd like to see more of these types of movies. |
My most favorite movie franchise of all !
As a kid in South Africa, I remember sneaking out of the house, riding my bicycle to the trees behind the drive in, jumping over the fence and turning up the volume of all the back row speakers ... My buddy and I drinking Cane Spirit and watching a 3 movie marathon.(1975 as it took 2 years to pass censorship) The message of society, race, social structure (remember I was also in South Africa). time travel just blowing my mind ... it is deep a part of me. I enjoy some of the new ones as well ... remember that some are RE telling . not necessarily a continuing story. New 2nd in a series out in 1 or 2 months . The budget for each of the first five was less for every movie and Heston always wanted more money each time (watch them with this in mind and it is very clear) . the franchise kept the production Co alive I could go on for hours .. but one last thought . It is interesting to watch them in "correct" time order (interesting as that shifts around a bit) . and even the "Ape Heads" often don't agree as the story become circular/. just to confuse you a bit ... http://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/...8y9uohujpg.jpg this and go back to the home page for even more info http://pota.goatley.com/prophecy/timeline.htm |
that still shot has the boat in the right corner, it was removed in the sequel opening shots.
|
Brian - thanks for that interesting chart. Feel free to visit and post in the MOVIE thread if you'd like. We could use some more posts from obvious movie fans such as yourself.
Now let's have another look at Nova...... :) http://img005.lazygirls.info/people/...PRIQ.sized.jpg |

Me on the Apes movie that had Mark Wahlberg in it about 12-13 years ago. Doing dust sampling.SmileWavy |
Hugh....what are those things they are holding?
There some funny stills at the end of the PotA on DVD. It has Charleton Heston in costume playing frisbee on the beach. |
