I Hate Vandals

Beginning of the month I brought my F350 into my garage to change the transmission. Although it is a big 2 car their is very little room to work so my 911 has had to stay outside. We received our first snowfall back the second weekend of the month which is also the weekend my wife and I were away. The car has been covered in snow ever since, never moved or touched. As the snow was melting this week I noticed scratches. It appeared it had been keyed, both sides at waist height. So needless to say I was very pi$$ed. Call the cops and report it but theirs nothing they can do but give me an occurence number. I have debated phoning insurance as I do not want my rates to go up. Tonight they are calling for more snow so I figured I would move it out of the way. Whenever it gets cold I lose air pressure in my tires so I brought out the air line to fill them. They have been slashed as well. I am waiting now for the police to call back. I guess I am also going to have to call my insurance. And my truck is still not fixed ta boot

Thanks for listening

Security video cameras are cheap.

Maybe it is time to try to catch the perps on tape?

imcarthur 11-30-2008 11:09 AM

That truly sucks.

You're up in Wasaga? 911s can't be too common up there. I know when I visited the outlaws (when they lived in Elmvale) my car got some strange looks from the locals.

Yeah this time of the year their are only a few. I like to drive it right up to the first snowfall if I can. I am going to be looking into the camera idea. I have been in this house for about 20 years. House broke into twice. First time prompted installing a alarm system. Second time was on may long weekend. I was out on the tractor and got the phone call that my alarm was going off. Come home to find they had kicked in a bedroom door and grabbed stuff in sight as the siren scared them off. Nothing to valuable just sentimental stuff of my wifes. Car have been hit a few times as well in the in the last few years. When I moved in their was no one else for blocks, just summer cottages. Loved it but now its just like anywhere else.

Dunno the psychology behind it...jealousy? But it seems that vandals love attacking Porsches and 'Vettes. SUV vandalism is usually political...the "green" idiots.

billybek 11-30-2008 11:57 AM

Aww, that sucks!
Sounds like you need a dog.... One with an attitude!
Even though a lot of us work on our own cars, people think they are exotic and for that reason they stand out. Makes them a target unfortunately.
Sorry to hear it.

could it have been vacationing american vandals? i hear canadians are nice and polite.
sorry to hear about it, i hope you find out who did it.

I don't know how it works in Canada, but in Minnesota the vandalism would be classified under the "comprehensive" portion of your policy. As such they should not and probably will not hike your rate. Just calling and asking to find out doesn't hurt.

Cameras are nice but unless its a professionally installed system, it will be a waste of money. You need a big buck system with heated lelements for cold temps and the ability to go ultra low light. The system needs to be totally passive and always on with continuous hard disk/tape record, and even then you need a clear head shot of the "perp" and only then may you have in a very remote chance of indentifying anyone.

Get a German Shepard.

Ontario insurance companies are just chomping at the bit to raise rates. They've cultivated a real culture of fear - in some cases rates can be raised simply for phone inquiries, though that might be just urban legend.

Cottage country is known for break-ins and whatnot, because such a high number of places are empty during the winter. It's a crappy situation, but if I were in it, I'd move. I've known of people who had their cottage broken into literally every winter. They eventually just sold it because they were sick of the constant cleanup.

BGCarrera32 is correct. If you put it under the comprehensive portion of your auto policy it doesn't affect your rates.

This is no longer cottage country, I have been in the same house for around twenty years. I am going to call the insurance company in the morning, good thing I have a recent appraisal, done at their request. Funny thing is that although covered my harley was outside as well. I was just having a beer with the neighbour and he suggested draining my fuel and oil tanks. No matter where you move to their is still this type of person.

Those Germanic tribes are just murder. You know, they were about the only Western group that defeated the Roman Empire, which denied the German territories of the benefits of civilization for 500years or so. This has often been used to explain why the Germans of the 20th Century were so far behind the other nations; they hadn't been civilized for very long, and had a lot of catching up to do. For my money the Visigoths are just as bad as the Vandals on a man-for-man basis, but the Vandals alwaysa seem to get the bad press. But whether you're dealing with Visigoths, Vandals, Goths, or just plain Up Nort street punks, they're a pain in the butt when they trash your stuff. My sympathies and the best of luck.

You may not need a real camera. Most vandals or Vandals can't tell the difference between a real camera and a fake one. I had a professor who once bought an old broken 8 mm camera from a junk store to install on his property. Of course it wasn't hooked up to anything; anyone with a brain knew it couldn't be, but we are all programed to believe that any camera is running 24 hours a day and is recording us as all the time. He often walked by and could see the local juvenile delinquients standing in front of the camera waiving, fully beliving they were on film. But he never had any property damage. One of those fake camera housings that is all blacked out so you can't see inside plus a sign or two might be all you need. It's a low cost first step at at rate.

I would do whatever I could to keep my 911 in the garage. If there is no room to work, pull the car out while you are working, and when you are done, move everyting around, and put it back in. Cant hurt to keep it out of the elements either. Sorry to hear about the car. I think I would be tourqed off if my 911 got vandalized . I have a coulple of rental homes in the city , and It seems as if I am regularly removing graffiti. If I ever catch them in the act.......

Tobra 11-30-2008 10:49 PM

that sucks, heard a story on the news that a few graveyards down on Modesto got vandalized, broke some hand carved sculpture that would be tough, if not impossible to replace.

WTF is wrong with people?

DanielDudley 12-01-2008 02:08 AM

What's it going to take to get the truck fixed, and the car back in the garage ?

whiskyb 12-01-2008 03:35 AM

Truck should be done today or tomorrow. Waiting on UPS to deliver me a new transmission cooler. First one was damaged on route so I had to send it back. Second one was held by customs for 4 days because of the paper work. Their web-site says it should be here today. Not sure if I should put some of that stop leak or even just use tire plugs even though it is the sidewall. I really don't like driving it with no air on the chance that I damage the rims. I will see what my insurance says, as I do not want to be blamed for causing any extra damage

You can be dropped for a comprehensive claim. At least here you can. Check before filing one.

slakjaw 12-01-2008 08:13 AM

I think its time to start shooting people who have no regard for others property. Our laws are way too lax when it comes to this kind of stuff.

whiskyb 12-01-2008 08:14 AM

Still waiting for the police to call back with a new occurence number so I can call insurance. I don't see how they can drop me though, thats really not fair. Its like sure we'll take your money but if you ever need our services we don't want you. Having dealt with claim agents before on previous claims I already have a gut feeling of how this is going to turn out. I have my motion activated camera that I use for tracking deer hooked up now. Their is a street light at the end of the driveway so it may work ok for the time being
