Airedale Terriers
They are known as the King of the Terriers. Smart, quick, loving, protective of family, gentle, and stubborn.....ohhh boy stubborn is the word for them. They have a mind of their own..
They were initially bred in Britain in the 1870's. They have been guard dogs in the USA, GB, Japan and only were eclipsed by the German Shepard after WW1, because of their stubborness. They have been used in Africa, India and North America to hunt big game...as in Lions, Tigers and Bears...ohhh no Lions Tigers and Bears...They are really a fearless dog...put a pack of em on anything and there won't be anything left... The standard Airedale weighs from about 40lbs on the small side up to 120 lbs...With the average being around 60 lbs...23 inches at the shoulder. Targas dogs are the OOrang blood line of Super sized Dales...that can weigh up to 150 lbs...which is to large and heavy for the frame of the dog...that particular strain was developed as a big game hunting dog in the USA. Down from that is the Flintkote bloodline which weighs in at from 60 lbs to 80lbs..my girl was of that lineage (her moms was 73 lbs) My girl was at 63 lbs for most of her life. My Dale George was a 120 pound er OOrang...he was agentle giant..that is until he ducked his head and fixed his gaze. I am happy to say that he was a happy dog with me. I got him when he was 8 years old....he was a Hollywood dog..Wilshire and La Brea...only drank bottled water and premium dog food...never even saw a cat until he came to me....he was so curious about them that his stare unnerved the cat. My girl grew up with a cat and thought she was a cat...she loved em and wanted to play with all the time, She really got upset when they would not come out and play with her. That dog was unbelievably quick, she could keep out in front of a Whippet. I do miss her terribly The lady who I got my girl from told me a story about a Dale she had when growing up. She said her Pops would take her to the garage with a belt when she misbehaved. One day her Pops was taking off his belt and the Dale knocked him over and held him on the ground until her Moms could come and save the day. That is how protective a Dale can be. If ya ask me a Dale is just about the best dog one can have, for all the above reasons. If I lived on a few acres of land I would have about 4 Dales, and nobody and nothing would ever bother you.

Geezus you do know about them....she would bark at me.... Cigars....I didn't need a wife I had an Airedale...bark bark bark...put that dam smelly thing out... I brought home an abstract painting leaned it up against a bookshelf on the floor...the Dale comes around the coffee table sees the painting stops dead in her tracks and starts barking at the dam thing.... I tell her everybody is an art critic, she stops barking goes up and sniffs it and is off on her way....again...

What Tabs said. Henry was an OOrang, which is why he had bad knees. Too much weight on the joints. So is Buddy. Henry was 105, and Buddy weighed in yesterday at 90. Gentle giants, love to play with anyone who will. And very protective of it's family.

Those puppy pics are great! We will be looking for a puppy in the spring for Buddy to hang with. He really misses his brother.

Nellie (the puppy) came to us in June of this year and Norra is about 2-1/2 right now, both are just a couple of country Airedales. Since it is deer season up here they are on leads and it is killing them! More puppy pictures!

I know what you mean. Buck season started here on Monday, so I go out with the dogs myself every time. We are way in the country here too. The boys just love it. They could roam all day and not get in any trouble, well for Airedales. Cute puppy. They CAN test your patience when they are that old!

I would have to agree ... I wonder why?
![]() ![]() ![]() The little one is a Welsch Terrier we adopted from a shelter. The Airedale is the second one I have and and I really like their demeanor.

Mj and I have thought many times that when we are too old ( getting closer every day!) for a large dog like a Dale, we would go with a Welsh. Good to see one in person. I see you feed them from the floor. I had to build a box for my guys as it was too far down for them, they had to eat laying down.

The food bowl on the floor is for the Welsh, the Airedale eats in the other room. Her bowl is up on a stool. They get along great except when being feed and then they try to stake out their territory.
The Welsh and the Airedale have the same temperament but I think the Welsh is part Mountain Goat, she loves to climb over everything. We found her on the computer desk one afternoon. This picture was taken just after we adopted her so she had the scruffy look going. ![]() All in all if you love the Airedale you will enjoy the Welsh as well, don’t let her size fool you she needs as much exercise (if not more) than the Airedale. This is how she looked after her first cut. Yes these are my girls. ![]()

My new erstaz Dale....ZOEY
Well at least she is a Terrier. I called the Airedale Rescue lady where I got George from and she said would you be interested in a Wire Fox Terrier...and I said yeah...and just look at what I brought home instead....either I took her or she was going to the adoption agency the next day...she is really the sweetest little thing...no bad habits except if I leave her in the house when I leave I find a toosie roll or 2 as a present in the same spot in the living room every time (if I am home and the door is open no accidents)...she is 5 years old.
I just don't have a large yard anymore to support an Airedale and there really is nothing for them to chase in the yard here either...so maybe a Welshie is in order...that is what I really set out to get this time around.. I am thinking about adding another hotel for fleas in the spring..to keep Zoey company. ![]()
