Why can't the media get it right? CNN indicates 15/9 and Fox 15/6. Now I have to go figure it out myself.

Sorry Milt, I didn't mean to single you out personally - if you really think it was unfair and she didn't do a good job - well, that's fine. We're all entitled to our opinions. It just came off as sort of unnecessarily negative/critical, which I guess we're all guilty of from time to time.

There's just so much negativity out there these days in general, it turns me off to hear it. Especially when I think (right or wrong) that it's unwarranted. I know I'm guilty of this on occasion too (I've had my share of "lookit this stupidity!" rants for sure) and I'm trying like hell to be more positive in general. It's tough to do these days, but I'd rather be a person who builds up rather than drags down. All I'm sayin'. Peace.

He's been moved from Running Back to Wide Receiver.

widgeon13 12-05-2008 11:29 AM

I was thinking more along the lines of "tight end" for a little while.

Okay, but what does that do for your "Cantankerous Member" status???

:D

AP quote, "Simpson could serve up to 33 years but could be eligible for parole after nine years, according to Elana Roberto, the judge's clerk."

After he plays Wide Receiver for a while, he'll be ready.

pwd72s 12-05-2008 12:01 PM

So, a little bit of a tangent...will he be respected by his fellow inmates? Or...?

You see the problem here? I'll trust the clerk, but to listen to Glass, you'd have most likely come up with a different figure. I think there were 10 or 11 counts and all I heard was "to be served concurrently." Except that she twice said "consecutively."

Not that it matters all that much, he got a ton of time. I mean 9 years is gonna be a b!tch and it should be. By tomorrow the papers and other news sources will have it all listed if we still care.

This is from AP/online: " Glass, a no-nonsense judge known for her tough sentences, imposed such a complex series of consecutive and concurrent sentences that even many attorneys watching the case were confused as to how much time Simpson got.

Simpson could serve up to 33 years but could be eligible for parole after nine years, according to Elana Roberto, the judge's clerk. "

I bet you really believe that, don't you?

Nah, no way some judge in Vegas would eeeeeever let that cross his mind.

LOL....yeah, right.

trekkor 12-05-2008 12:24 PM

I thought is was interesting that Judge Glass mentioned how this was an exception to the majority of the cases she sees. The whole thing, with all of the events were recorded on tape.

Why would anyone appeal? "That wasn't OJ on the tapes".

Why wouldn't I?

I hold myself to a high level of ethical standards, I hold others to the same high level, and I expect that everyone else holds me to that same high level.

If those three things don't happen, then why bother doing anything anymore? Why bother voting, why bother working, why bother living anymore? My "idealistic" expectations of myself and the world around me, my undying faith that people do the right thing, especially when it's their job, and my ultimate trust in the abilities of people to make the right decisions keep me going. I might as well curl up and die if I can't have faith in the world around me.

m21sniper 12-05-2008 12:42 PM

Idealism looks good on paper, but fails miserably in the real world.

Pazuzu 12-05-2008 12:46 PM

Especially with that attitude. However, you don't even need idealism to expect that a judge would sentence someone based on the trial instead of bias, do you?

I can expect a person welding a building together to weld safely and properly. I can expect a doctor to read charts critically and carefully. I can expect a judge in a big case to keep sanity, and to remove bias from the trial. None seem particularly idealistic, do they?

Zeke 12-05-2008 01:05 PM

Mike, you sound like me 40 years ago. It was all black or white, no shades in between. I don't agree with sniper on much of anything, but he's got a handle on this. People are just not good enough to hold to those high standards everyday, everywhere.

Now, if you do cancer research in a lab or similar, I can see your point of view. But, don't take it home to the gardener (just an example) or you will be disappointed regularly. I've been disappointed all my life and now that it's getting closer to being over than the starting point, I'm letting go.

I tried to put up perfect moldings yesterday and the guy before me didn't give me much to work with AFA plumb, level and square. What was I to do, rebuild the whole damn thing? Nope, see my sig, do your best and go home.

m21sniper 12-05-2008 01:07 PM

I see cops and judges act with bias all the time. Had a female cop tell me the other night she was gonna make me leave a repo on the scene(LOL, yeah, right) because of my 'attitude', when in fact the reason she was pissed was because i discussed the case with the male cops in the car in front of her who had responded first, and when they pulled away i walked back over to the vehicle we were siezing, instead of up to her car to re-explain everything all over again just for her.

I've seen judges in traffic court throw people in jail after they'd just let several other people with more $ in arrears fines go on a payment plan because they didn't like something about them, be it their dress, attitude, or who knows whatever else.

I think you live in fantasy land.

Pazuzu 12-05-2008 01:16 PM

So, because you've seen judges act with bias means I shouldn't expect that they won't? Those two things are not in any way causally related. I expect that people play by the rules. If they don't, then they've hurt my expectations, but that doesn't mean I can't expect if of them, now does it?

onlycafe 12-05-2008 01:56 PM

now it is time to start the clock on jailhouse proposals for poor oj. surely some lovely young women would still like to marry up with him. it would be even safer for them now. less likely that they would come to harm, what with the supervised visitations. maybe a new surreality show. "who wants to marry oj?"
