My News SUCKS

Lived in NY for a long time.

Nightly newscast always had a nice mix of local, national and international news.

Been in TX for a year + now and there is never any national coverage. Nothing, nada.

In retrospect it's the same when I visit the folks in FL.

I get more "news" from this board.

Think I'm buying a Slingbox and sending to a buddy in NY so I can get back in touch with the rest of the world.

Thats because the whole world can fit inside of Texas. So it's all local in nature,.

The media in the US is all East Coast driven..what passes for good in America is derived b the East Coast Ivy Leaguers.... Whetehr it be business, media or intellectualism.

We should all say thank you to them at our next wine and brie party...after words we can all chant "YES WE CAN IN UNISON" Thank you for our daily bread Obama.

Then again, I am a huge fan of Melissa Newton of NBC 5

You're talking about the local news programs, right?

I always think it's relatively lame when they cover national and international stuff... and it seems like filler... as if they don't have enough local stories and investigative reporting to fill their 21 minutes (30 minutes minus ads)... even less when you consider the time they spend on weather and sports.

We watch the networks at 6:30 (5:30 for you in TX, I assume) for the national and international stuff... and CNN and Fox News later on in the evening if we want to go for more in-depth coverage.

When your local news dudes and dudettes do national and beyond, they're generally just running footage they get from their network affiliate and doing a cursory commentary.

So if you wanna spend only 30 minutes each night and hear coverage of more than just local stories, you should just switch to watching what the networks put out at 5:30 (your time).

Great how they managed to infiltrate the BBC as well. BTW, what has been passing for good in America has set the bar so low that one either has to limbo or step up.

Please step up. The OP has a legitimate point.

Watching local news for national events is a waste of time. You have heard of Fox News, MSNBC, Headline News, and CNN, right? Also the national news that airs on every network immediately after your local news.

Most national or world news you see on local news comes from AP pool reporters. Only the AP and major 24 hr. networks have the resources to have people on the ground everywhere in the world at the same time. News outlets pay a fee to the AP based on the size of their circulation or audience and in return they get access to the AP wire feed and can also reproduce stories done by their pool reporters. If you see a world news story in your local newspaper, look closely and you'll probably see some attribution the AP. When they get really lazy, they just reprint verbatim whatever came across the wires.
