It really is clean and smooth. Unlike any vodka I've had, most of which tastes like turpentine to me after having the Chopin. It has a bit of vicosity which I found pleasing. It is to vodka as Balvenie 15 is to Scotch imo. I was amazed at how excellent it was. Kind of hard to find here though.

I drink Chopin and Belvedere.

Chopin is a Moet-Hennesey product so of course it's good.

Belvedere. Lovely stuff.

Isn't it true that the highest form of vodak has no flavor?? If so, what's the point?

(yes - vodak)

Not really. The fermented carbohydrate source imparts a lot of delicate flavor.

Grey Goose is made from wheat.
Belvedere is made from rye.
Chopin is made from potatoes.

Kinda sorta. The purest form of vodka has no *added* flavor.

Vodka and gin differ from other hard liquors in that the "mash", or original fermentation, is distilled to 100% pure alcohol (or as close as possible). Then water & flavoring are added to suit.

Many people think that vodka is made with potatoes, or beets... but in reality you can make vodka with beer, wine... anything with alcohol in it. The unique flavors of different vodkas comes not from the original "mash", but from the water or flavoring that's added after it is distilled to pure alcohol.

I know someone who has a fractional still and makes vodka in their basement. The original "mash" is just a few bags of sugar in a garbage can with water, lemon juice and yeast. That yeilds 14% alcohol that is distilled out to about 75%, then distilled again to cut out congeners. After the second distillation, it's run through a carbon filter a couple times.

This is great vodka. I like it strong, at about 65%, but that is too strong for some people to enjoy. If it's cut down again to about 40% it is a really nice, pure tasting vodka. Not as medicinal tasting as Smirnoff, but not as oily as Absolute.

I keep mine in a gas can, just for effect

Ciroc. In a shaker over ice, served straight up. 2nd choice is Belvedere.

BRPORSCHE 12-07-2008 05:35 PM

WIFE!?! aww fuch that. I am only 21!

I usually go with stoli because the handles are super cheap at Costco. Svedka is also good for the money. I'll have to try and find Tito's...never seen it before. Do they sell it on the west coast?

Tobra 12-07-2008 09:12 PM

Stoli, what do they make that out of?

After seeing mythbusters, I got some cheap vodka and ran it through the Brita filter half dozen times, and it tasted pretty decent.

In my home bar I have:

Ciroc Vodka
Finlandia Vodka
Ketel One
Smirnoff Blue
Smirnoff Red
Stolichnaya Garlic Liqueur (home made)
Stolichnaya Lemon Vodka
Stolichnaya Orange (Stoli Ohranj)
Stolichnaya Vodka
Ursus Roter Vodka + Sloe Berries
Belvedere
Effen
Grey Goose
Pravda

The Ciroc and Grey Goose are my favourites, even though they are completely different in character. The Smirnoff red is rubbish, nowhere near high enough alcohol.

The best of the rest would be the Stolichnaya or Belvedere (probably Belvedere).

They all have different characters and suit different purposes (straight vs vodka martini vs other cocktails etc)

vash 12-08-2008 07:20 AM

i probably shouldnt have voted...i dont really drink vodka.

i have only tried a handful.

North Coast Cab 12-08-2008 08:58 AM

Belvedere

M.D. Holloway 12-08-2008 09:21 AM

Popov - by the time the Vodka breaks out, nobody notices the swill and you could serve up pond water without complaints.
