Vodka of choice?

I was recently in Montreal on business. I was hanging out with sales guys (of the high-end boozer variety) in old town at a Polish restaurant. Great food, nice ambience, but the vodka was out of this world. Ice cold, straight up Chopin. Puts Grey goose (my old std) to shame. It will be in my freezer.

I donīt care much for Vodka strait up. Only in coffee (50/50) and I am patriotic so mostly Absolut.

BRPORSCHE 12-07-2008 11:58 AM

I adore this stuff. Usually on sale too!

TITO's

handmade, out of texas (?)

inexpensive, and very very good.

The difference is that Chopin is made from POTATOES rather than from grain like most American and Russian vodkas. Potato vodka is much cleaner and smoother than grain alcohol. I'll leave it to the chemists to sort out why, but to my palate it's a fact.

Try Monopolowa from Austria, another potato vodka. Trader Joe's now gets a special bottling (not their usual fancy label with the Vienna ferris wheel through the bottle) that they sell for about 10 bucks for a full liter (not the usual 750 ml). It's great straight and frozen, on the rocks with a twist (I've got a Meyer lemon tree), or mixed with everything from Clamato to Red Bull.

vash,

I hate to break it to you but TITO's is crap. Every party I go to there is a bottle of that stuff.

Not true.
But I really enjoy Sobieski and Zubrovka (which is a bison grass infused)

Kettleone. Tried Tito's. It's okay. Kettleone seems smoother.

t951 12-07-2008 12:43 PM

Blavod. black vodka

SlowToady 12-07-2008 01:14 PM

None of them. Can't stand the taste or smell, and the hoards of sorority girls running around wanting to know where the "Peach Smearr-a-noff" is. Last time I drank it, it was mixed in with something else in a shot, and I could distinctly taste the vodka --and almost threw up on the bar.

Crown Royal it is for me...

gprsh924 12-07-2008 01:15 PM

Skoal...because I am cheap.

Once in a blue moon when I decide to splurge, Ketel One is my choice.

The Polish vodkas are hard to beat IMO (rye or potato varieties).
Ultimat is a decent potato/rye blend.
For a good rye, try Pravda.

Stolichnaya...

Tried them all, but I always buy absolute, go ahead make fun, rocks 2 olives.
But then, thats before dinner. Then a Napa Cab, Brunello, Napa Blend, Super tuscan, Malbec, Syrah:D

It really is clean and smooth. Unlike any vodka I've had, most of which tastes like turpentine to me after having the Chopin. It has a bit of vicosity which I found pleasing. It is to vodka as Balvenie 15 is to Scotch imo. I was amazed at how excellent it was. Kind of hard to find here though.

Iceberg Vodka. It's actually made from icebergs.

Stoli.

As for budget vodka goes, Svedka isn't bad.
