Just bought a bottle of Talisker for my father-in-law in China. If my BMW sells tomorrow, I may have to open it and then buy him another one. My favorite is probably Balvenie, but only the 15 yr. old stuff.

I have done. And it's wonderful.
In fact I have a bottle of 25 in the cellar. Can't quite bring myself to open it, because I'm sure it will be gone very quickly.

If we're just talking Whiskey, Crown Royal. Best I can afford
And it tastes damned fine, whether out of a shot glass or sipped on the rocks. I've got a bottle waiting at home; celebration for making it through another semester. Southern Comfort + lime makes a wonderful drink as well and boy will it sneak up on you! If we're talking Bourbon..I like Buffalo Trace, Woodford and one or two others whose names escape me at present. Edit: Booker's. That's one of the Bourbons I couldn't remember. Booker T. Noe is a grandson of Jim Beam, and produces some rather fine spirits. I had the 127.5 proof Booker's. Definitely not to be drank straight unless your insides are made of granite. I think my throat swelled. Felt like I was swallowing dirt for a few hours. Cut and sipped it's much better.

My 40th birthday presents to myself were a bottle of Laphroaig 15 plus a Cuban (plus a new lens with which I shot the pics.)
Overall I much prefer the highland malts to the Islay's.

Sheep Dip Pure Malt Scotch Whiskey
I'm of Scottish decent.  I like it, but you can clean paint brushes with it.

I believe the world you are thinking of is "whisky", not "whiskey". The latter is the original, the ambrosia from Heaven itself bequeathed to the Irish. The former is some peat moss mixed with loch water and sold as something good.
