Best way to ship ammo?

I bought my friend in CA 50 rounds of British .303 ammo for his Lee-Enfield rifle. How would I go about sending it to him? We have a local UPS shop in town that I patronize and I was planning on taking it there to have it packed, labeled and shipped. I know there are federal regulations regarding shipping dangerous materials. Does anyone have any advice? Thanks!

Small arms, 50 caliber and less can be shipped via UPS. The smart way to do this is to take advantage of an exception in the 49 CFR that allows these to be reclassified as an ORM-D (other regulated material domestic). This gets you out of certain requirements such as formal shipping papers, emergency response information, hazardous materials shipper registration, hazardous materials training and associated record keeping. Trust me, this is a really cool exception!

The package must be sturdy and have the appropriate ORM-D marking on it for small arms. That can be a pain to get as you don't need, say, a box of 100. You might be able to pick it up from a gun shop or print one off the internet. Maybe UPS has them as well. There will be additional paperwork to fill out so don't go at the busy time. Oh wait, this is Christmas...

Shipping hazardous materials is a pain for the everyday person. Whenever possible, try to have any hazardous item shipped directly by the manufacturer.

So that's why all my orders from Cheaper than Dirt have a sticker on the box that says ORM-D...

Pack securely, mark as "ORM-D small arms ammunition" (you can use a sharpie for this... no special label), and you *must* take it to a UPS depot, not a pack n ship place.

50 rounds?
Put it in a box and ship it.

Have UPS pick up at your door.
Throw a fruitcake in the box to throw off the ammo-sniffing dogs.

But that's just how I do it.

I sent 4 boxes of reloads via greyhound, in a small RubberMaid container, buried in a bunch of Christmas presents. (It was going to my Dad).

EDIT: I mean I "HEARD" of someone...

years ago i recall hearing horror stories about .303 enfields blowing the bolt out backwards. tell your friend to be careful.
tell him to have that piece well checked out before lighting it up.

Thanks for thew info! I took the package to my local UPS store and they said they can't send it (insurance reasons). They told me to take it to the UPS terminal and I did and they were closed. They are open 10a-6p on M-F, not too convenient.

I visited the UPS hub in Taylor, MI on the way home from work today and sent the ammo to my friend for $12 without any problems at all. They said I can ship up to 67lbs of ammo without any issues. Thanks for the helpful advice!

My friend in Santa Ana received his box of 50 rounds of British .303 for his Lee Enfield rifle last PM and he's very happy!
