who knows "stills". home distilling?

i am not a chemist.

on my recent trip to southeast asia, i sampled a home distilled hooch called LAU LAU. basically fermented sticky rice, distilled into a fragrant moonshine. i immediately decided i would try it at home (despite the eye rolling from the wife). anyone come up with a home distillery? buying florence flasks and various chemistry acoutrements may be too costly. maybe a garage sale pressure cooker?

is this even legal?

do be careful..
I picked up some 82nd guys in the dustbowl..
everything from kidney failure to blind...
would have thought those southern boys had this process down.
Local brits paid some Pak's to run a still on their compound..
20 bucks for 1ltr....wicked stuff.

They all switched to growing pot YEARS ago (even the "old timers") and it's probably a lost "art" ...I kid you not.

In college, one of my roommates tried making that kind of stuff. He made the mash with rice and a few grapes for flavor, IIRC. His still was a huge stainless pot with a rubber gasket on under the lid, clamps of some sort to hold it together, and copper tubing running through an ice bath. He wasn't happy with the way the sake turned out, but looking back on it, it wasn't much worse than your average unfiltered sake. I think we were too used to plain old Ozeki. Anyway, he tossed the mash and wound up never using the still. Too bad...

There are some very pretty hand-hammered "stills" in many different sizes available on ebay as well (ornamental, of course)

here is the "home still" in PakBeng, Laos. a tiny village running on car batteries along the Mekong river.

here is a "commercial" laulau factory in luang prabang, laos. very unsanitary with chickens and pigs eating the fermented rice. they roamed around.

some very eccentric man calling himself, Mr. BK gave me the recipe.
