Things a man should know how to do...

Most young men, say under 30, are at a loss with many routine tasks. Fortunately my stepson relishes opportunities for me to show him how to do things...i.e., a simple brake job, routine motorcycle mainyenance, fixing a garage door opener, changing a light fixture or switch or outlet. Things most of his peers have no idea of how to do and could care less.

Anyways...I ran across this list from some website. Feel free to add your own...

Things every man should know how to do:

tie a tie
change a tire
swim
safely handle a firearm
drive stick
saw a board
read a map
read and write
say I love you
say I’m sorry
say I forgive you
give a toast
His Social Security number and Driver's License number.
apply a tourniquet to stop bleeding
find north without a compass when outside
make a cup of coffee
drink a beer with friends
choose a good wine
how to hook up jumper cables to jump start a car
how to push-start a car with manual transmission
cook a steak on the grill
clean a fish
sew a button
cook a simple meal
operate the dishwasher, washing machine, and clothes dryer
understand the basics of carpentry
understand the basics of electricity
set the clock on a VCR or DVD player
light a fire
give a good handshake
fix the toilet (replace the ball and cock, etc)
unplug the toilet (using a plunger or pipe snake)
take apart the sink trap, clean it out, reassemble it
check your oil and tire pressure
defend himself in a fist-fight
catch a ball
Every man should be able to explain most of the rules for Baseball, Football, and Basketball. If you're from the hinterlands, include hockey. From anywhere besides the USA? Soccer.
how to give himself a testicular exam
How to answer these questions from a wife or girlfriend:
What are you thinking about?
Do you love me?
Does this (blouse, skirt, dress, etc.) make me look fat?
Did you think that girl was pretty?
Would you get remarried if I died?
Who was the best lover you ever had?
Every man should know how to get out of his house during a fire
where he will go if a tornado threatens
how to put out the following fires:
Class A - Wood, paper,cloth, trash
Class B - Flammable liquids, oil, gas, grease
Class C - Electrical, energized electrical equipment
CPR
The heimlich maneuver.
change a diaper – or avoid changing one.

-Every man should be able to explain most of the rules for Baseball, Football, and Basketball. If you're from the hinterlands, include hockey. From anywhere besides the USA? Soccer.
-how to give himself a testicular exam
-How to answer these questions from a wife or girlfriend: IS THIS A TRICK??
*Does this (blouse, skirt, dress, etc.) make me look fat?
*Did you think that girl was pretty?

And about putting out fires... I think I know how, just don't have a very good record.

Superman 12-15-2008 02:12 PM

Absolutely! I can handle everything on that list except the DVD/VCR thing.

Joe Ricard 12-15-2008 02:15 PM

Missed the Choose a good wine. But I replaced it with good beer. So all is right with my world.
Pretty good list.
Pay bills. Electronic, or via paper check and stamp.
Balance check book
Save money
Spend money wisely
Get a car un-stuck from snow or mud
Handle emergencies without losing cool.

vash 12-15-2008 02:15 PM

That's easy. Snap your fingers...

:D :D :D

MRM 12-15-2008 02:25 PM

That's just a manual dexterity test for being able to manipuplate small objects with the first two fingers against the thumb. Evolution built that into young men. They'll all get it easily after a try or two. The secret is to relax as you do it. If you think about the reward that's waiting for you, you tend to pull too hard, stretching the elastic, creating too much tension. Isolate the hook with your thumb and fingers, pull just far enough to get slack in the system, and rub your first two fingers against your thumb. The tension snaps the hook right off.

hahahha. sorry, bored at work. this could be it's own thread..

The wife of a male coworker saw this list a few months ago. She prides herself as being able to do "manly" things (she's an engineer who has worked in a refinery and an automotive plant). So...we took her trap shooting.

check your oil and tire pressure
That's for girls. Boys need to be able to change the oil, the spark plugs, and all the filters, belts and hoses. Minimum.

How to dive on the ice and snow.

Avoid aunt flo.

jyl 12-15-2008 02:51 PM

Things on the list I can't do:

how to give himself a testicular exam
Class B - Flammable liquids, oil, gas, grease
Class C - Electrical, energized electrical equipment
CPR
The heimlich maneuver.

Guess I need to improve. How do you put out class B and C fires, anyway?

Things I would add to the list:

Fix basic MS Windows problems

I think 6 out of 100.

SlowToady 12-15-2008 03:14 PM

Construct a ground blind
Setup a tree stand
Hunt different species of game with relative success
Saddle/Ride a horse (western)
Fish
Drink whisky (in large quantities)
Shoot a firearm
Shoot a bow and arrow
Start a campfire (without man-made fuels, no gas, kerosene, etc)
Manage pointers and dynamic memory in C/C++
Survive a few days in the outdoors.

My dad is pretty old school and I'm constantly amazed at the things he teaches me, and the way he thinks about them. I find that we often think about, and go about, tasks or problems is a dissimilar manner. He grew up building things and working with his hands, I grew up doing mathematics and programming. Probably where the difference comes from. I also learn quite a bit from my boss, who is an old rodeo cowboy. Very old school in his ways, but has an expansive knowledge of horses.

azasadny 12-15-2008 03:24 PM

How about:

- reload his own ammunition
- brew his own beer

Zeke 12-15-2008 03:25 PM

Drive a nail. I think the majority can, but the ones that can't make me cringe. Maybe for that reason I should not suggest it. :D

If you do drive a nail, FG'sS, grab the hammer at or near the end, not way up near the head. Half the guys making some kind of living in the trades can't hold a freakin' hammer!

Also, add "be able to use enough hand tools to build a simple box." (accurately)

masraum 12-15-2008 03:51 PM

give a toast -- I suppose I could do it, but probably not well
make a cup of coffee -- I don't drink coffee. I could make one, but can't guaranty the results.
choose a good wine -- hmm, I could choose one that I'd probably like
clean a fish -- I could get it done, but it wouldn't be fast or pretty
defend himself in a fist-fight -- well, if you consider not getting into a fight...
Every man should be able to explain most of the rules for Baseball, Football, and Basketball. If you're from the hinterlands, include hockey. From anywhere besides the USA? Soccer. -- I could get the basics at least.
Class C - Electrical, energized electrical equipment -- not sure, get the elec disconnected?

Class B grease fire, I think you'd use baking soda. Chemical fires like gas most definitely don't go out with a Class A ext. I know that

RWebb 12-15-2008 03:57 PM

able to use a motor-operated pushover

masraum 12-15-2008 04:00 PM

Construct a ground blind -- why in "survive a few days" you won't be doing it
Setup a tree stand -- ditto
Hunt different species of game with relative success -- probably yes
Saddle/Ride a horse (western) -- saddle, dunno, ride, certainly no expert
Fish -- probably a good thing, but boring as hell
Drink whisky (in large quantities) -- don't agree with this one
Shoot a firearm -- sure
Shoot a bow and arrow -- sure
Start a campfire (without man-made fuels, no gas, kerosene, etc) -- good one
Survive a few days in the outdoors. -- another good one.

Several of these should go hand in hand with the last one, but some are just about hunting more than surviving, I think.

motorcycle and boat, not bad, SLR not bad, but the giant toolbox. Not necessary to be a man. I've got one, but I don't think it should be a requirement.

DavidB911 12-15-2008 04:36 PM

I can do most of them on the list and the ones you guys mentioned. I still have a few years to learn the rest. I should mention the list to the gf so she lets me practice some of the techniques.;)

blk911 12-15-2008 04:52 PM

balance a checkbook

negotiate a contract
