Las Cruces, N.M.
I'm in Las Cruces for a few days with parents and brother, my mom and stepdad just bought a house here. Nice town but a little too much new construction for my taste, the entire place looks like it was built in the last 10 years. Very clean and nice, though. I know that there is an older part of town that is charming in an old west sort of way from a previous visit but I haven't seen it yet this time.
Went for a great hike in the local mountains yesterday, base was about 4500 ft. and top of trail was 6900 ft. Met some nice people on the trail including some other ex-Minnesotans that went to same Catholic grade school as my brother and me. Any Pelicans in Las Cruces want to grab a coffee or a drink? Let me know here or shoot me a PM. ![]() BTW, just filled the 996 w/ Chevron premium for $26.00 from bone dry, ($1.69 a gallon), last summer I spent ~$75.00 for the same fuel. Got a pretty consistent 26 mpg on the trip doing about 80 mph w/ many triple-digit blasts. Fair amount of traffic on the interstate, cheap gas+ holidays I guess. ![]()

a great magarita at the double eagle in las crusas. they have a haunted room
if you have the pcar, take a blast thru the pecan orchards, and find a small bar/restaurant called Chope's (that is two syllables: choup-pees). hands down the best dive place on this green planet. great margaritas, beer in buckets, and some of the best chili rellenos ever. you will party with farmers, bikers, and some college kids....the place is a spirited 30 minute run from old las crusas (mesilla). if i was in town i would run you around. skip any and all wine things. their idea of wine is...creative.

Thank you CK, we were going to go to White Sands today but didn't make it. Tomorrow is supposed to be a wind storm, so not going there but maybe before I leave. I'll definitely be back here now that it's my mom's winter house.

There's a very, very good restaurant in old Messilla called La Mesa. It was a post office/trading post back when Billy the kid hung out there. I've eaten there a dozen times and every time it's been great.
I can't go through Cruces without stopping there. My grandparents lived there and I spent most of my youthful summers there. I'd do my chores early in the morning and then grab the .22 and head off through the desert towards A mountain (named for the big A on it, stands for Aggies) looking for rabbit or snakes or tin cans, whatever. Usually I only found cans. Those were good times. My father worked at white sands when he met my mother who also lived in Cruces. They have some really good walnuts on the north end of town too ![]() |

The State Police are in the Pecan Groves; my family has plenty of tickets as proof.
Its actually a foolish place to speed; too many side road entrances and slow moving vehicles. If you hit a tree shaker, sweeper or harvester or pecan truck/trailer with the 911 you'll be on the losing end. |

Sorry about that. I must be getting ole-timers or something. It is reported that regular customers included Billy the Kid, Kit Carson, General Douglas MacArthur and Pancho Villa. Last edited by sammyg2; 12-22-2008 at 05:36 PM.. |

Neat place. I agree about the La Mesa. It's a good place to eat.
I bought some of this Ol' Gringo sauce and plan to get some more. Take a case home with you. It makes great enchiladas. http://www.olgringo.com/products.php?num=2 Marry Christmas.
