So You Want Objectivity, You Can't Handle Objectivity

Dualiity and the Self

Wed, 12/24/2008 - 12:09 — tabs The crux of the problem for some people is to understand that in the universe as in ones personality there is a duality. The practical application of that understanding is the issue, some people like Bill Clinton are able to understand both sides of the equation and use it to practical advantage. What follows is the abstraction of that concept and the how and why it works.

It has been said of Bill Clinton that he is able to see and be able to argue both sides of an issue. This is the trait that has enabled him to become President of the USA, as it allowed him to connect with people of disparate views emotionally. However because of his own limitations of desperately wanting to be liked he is almost unable to define his own position. That is why he appears to be a chameleon, and send the conservatives into a tizzy, because there is nothing definable about him. Thus the sobriquet "Slick Willy." Conservatives generally want to be able to grab unto a definable position as in a yes or no answer. Conservatives do not want equivocation they want definability.

Clinton takes on the likes and dislikes of the person he is talking to. This comes out of his early upbringing where his father was not present. So to overcome his own insecurities and be liked or feel included he had to take on the traits of the group he was around, while suppressing his own self. It is almost a sixth sense with him, he is very attuned to the opinions and emotions of others, in order to be liked by them.

In general duality means there is either going to be an affirmative or a negative response to a question or issue. Most if not all people only pay attention to their own biases or ideology when considering an issue. They don't see the whole picture, their vision is limited. However there is a third position and that is a neutral wait and see either how things develop or wait for more information before making a decision.

In order to go beyond mere partisan ideology or bias and not be held prisoner to your own ideology or bias one has to be able to present both sides of an argument with equal conviction. One has to be able to see that both sides of an argument are right or correct in its own way. It is like being able see an object from 2 different vantage points. Each offers its own perspective and nuance. Each both equally valid. That is duality...and one must understand duality to see the universe at it truly is...for it is only then that one can get to the center and see that it is neither good nor bad. but it is just what is happening.

Once one reaches a position in the center one then can choose their own position, based upon their own likes and dislikes. However the difference is that one can discount, set aside or separate their own ideology from the facts when assessing a situation, because one understands the how and why of both sides of the equation. That choosing of your own position is ultimately the concept of finding the true self.

The above is not to imply that Clinton is a zen master.

Clinton is NO ZEN master far from it...he could be one though..he isn't able to define his own position, he is amorphous..like the air, no definable shape.

He does not apparnetly have the courage to do it. For it takes taking a STAND against all odds if need be to define ones character.

Marine, what is that button on your body armor?

JOKER

A peace symbol, sir.

COLONEL

Where'd you get it?

JOKER

I don't remember, sir.

COLONEL

What is that you've got written on your helmet?

JOKER

"Born to Kill," sir.

COLONEL

You write "Born to Kill" on your helmet and you wear a peace button. What's that supposed to be, some kind of sick joke?!

JOKER

No, sir.

COLONEL

You'd better get your head and your ass wired together, or I will take a giant shi! on you!

JOKER

Yes, sir.

COLONEL

Now answer my question or you'll be standing tall before the man.

JOKER

I think I was trying to suggest something about the duality of man, sir.

COLONEL

The what?

JOKER

The duality of man. The Jungian thing, sir.

COLONEL

Whose side are you on, son?

JOKER

Our side, sir.

Seahawk...I ultimately am on my own side which may coincide with being on our side. If not wholly than largely.

I can not escape being subjective or being biased, as it is part and parcel of being mortal men. The bias maybe as small as prefering blueberrys to strawberrys, but it never the less clouds our vision ever so slightly. Now compound bias. By being able to understand duality it allows me to see around the edges, to see that if we could drop our bias completely we would be standing in the light.

But by understanding duality it allows us to choose our own bias's, our own position.

By understanding duality we can change our opinion when new facts come along like. "I was for the war before I was against the war."

OR on April 8Th, 2008 Hillary said... Clinton, who continued making her case to the Obama supporter drew loud cheers from the crowd when she told the man: “I wish we could believe that we could get to universal health care, that we could turn the economy around, that we could end the home foreclosure crisis merely bay asking people to do it, by bringing them together, by pointing to a higher cause and expecting them to shelve their personal, ideological, personal and partisan advantages, that is not the way the world has ever worked.”

I agree...wholly and largely, with pomegranates.

You see if Bill was with a person who liked Blueberrys he would prefer blueberys, if strawberrys then he would prefer strawberrys and if Pomegranates then pomegrantes...however if he found through a poll that people overwhelmingily like Pomegranates then it would be pomegranates that he liked best of all.

where is the definability. Does he ever take a stand and stay yes blueberrys are wonderfull I agree but I like strawberrys best of all. At the risk of being booed by the crowd because he didn't even mention pomegranates. There is the tragic flaw in the man.

And leadership requires that you have the courage to lead to the premise that strawberrys are best of all at the risk of being booed. True leadership is not a popularity contest, but saying and doing what you think is the best course of action, and being able to explain it. Ole Daniel Boone was a leader, he led men to where no white men had traversed before. He blazed a trail and people followed even though they thought that going beyond known civilization was to fall off the edge of the flat earth.
