The worst word in the English language.

"Can't" there are so many reasons why I hate it, it is intolerable.
I can't do this, I can't do that; etc, etc. I hate hearing people use it, drives me crazy! This word is not permissible in our home, period.

I can't argue with you about that! I can't stand that word and I can't think of a worse one. That's not to say that there can't be one of course. But I can't imagine there is.

I get your point about "cant". Early on I was told that nothing is impossible - a viewpoint I like so "cant" doesn't have a large role in my life. Worse than "cant" is "should" in my opinion.

You should do this. You should have done that.

My dads favorite was, "the impossible just takes a little longer".

I don't have as big a problem with "can't" as I do "try." Some things, I cannot do because they violate my principles for one reason or another, or because the tools to do a certain thing are not immediately available, etc. So "can't" is not verboten for me. I can live with a leeetle bit of "can't."

But "try"? Oooooh I really go nuts inside when I'm working with somebody on something, or talking with somebody about doing something, and they say, "I'll try..."

That's like saying to me, "Yeah, whatever. I'll maybe make a half-assed attempt do it and say I 'tried' and I'm done. Hey, I TRIED."

Screw "TRY".

DO IT or DON'T DO IT, but don't tell me you're going to "try"!

Now that I'm all worked up about this, I'm going to go TRY to have a great New Year's Day. Heeeee!

DARISC 01-01-2009 10:48 AM

You ought not use should. And you should not use ought. But I can't seem to quit using both of them. It's very trying.

RWebb 01-01-2009 11:21 AM

I can't understand your position on the use of this word.

Maybe it is just cant.

rouxroux 01-01-2009 11:51 AM

Can't is just the new PC way of saying "I won't".

Jim Richards 01-01-2009 11:52 AM

Emmitt Smith would say it's "debacled."

Dantilla 01-01-2009 11:56 AM

I can't stand this thread. I'll try to get over it.

So, don't try to win your race. Either win it, or don't.
And if you don't, just remind yourself that you didn't even try.

There is no such thing as can't, only I don't want to.

stomachmonkey 01-01-2009 12:55 PM

So you are saying you can't say that in your house?

I bet the original poster is a real joy to live with.

Have you thought about counseling? You know, before the word banning leads to book burning. :p

Sonic dB 01-01-2009 01:10 PM

It's not that I don't want to, but I can't touch my right elbow with my right hand...
