Dancing??? I don't get it.

I find dancing a very strange human trait. From the stage I see the strangest stuff. It is in all cultures and has been for like ever.
So what's up with that? Is it hard wired in us as a mating thing? If so why do old people dance? I just find it very peculiar.

Vertical representation of horizontal desire.

"Big bottom, big bottom, talk about mud flaps, my gal's got 'em" ;)

targa911S 01-05-2009 08:26 AM

that's good.

its a natural response to rythm. you tap your feet to a song? thats dancing, except that you have limited your bodies movements to just your foot. bobbing your head is dancing. if the rythm gets into your blood and bones then it wants to dance. whether you let it or not is up to your brain

i went to college with a lot of deaf students since once of the largest colleges for the deaf was associated with my college. i got to know some. a whole bunch of deaf people would go out to bars to see bands play or to night clubs and they would dance their a$$es off without even hearing the music. they could feel the bass and kick drum hit them like a wave. pretty amazing

i was playing guitar in front of my friends 11 month old baby the other day. the baby was standing in front of me bouncing with the beat. amazing.

That's my point. It seems like a natural thing, and it crosses all borders of mankind. It's like we are meant to do it. We used to do an annual gig for a blind society and they too were amazing to watch. Some, blind from birth, could dance well, even though they had never seen anyone dance. We did have to keep turning them around as they were drawn to the stage by the vibes.

My wife is still hounding me about taking ballroom dancing lessons. It all started with Emmet Smith in that dancing with the all stars show. Freaking reality shows!

Both my kids (currently 3.5 and 1.5) love to dance to music. I took my son (3.5) to Best Buy a couple of year ago...he was sitting in the cart. As we approached a TV playing a rock concert, he just started swinging his legs. My daughter "rocks out" in the car when I have the music on. It's the cutest, funniest thing. She can't talk but gets upset when the songs change.

FWIW, it's one of the more healthy activities you can do in life, both physically and psychologically. It relieves stress and can be one of the purest expressions of joy or exuberance, especially when someone really loves the music being heard and "just cannot help (stifle) themself."

People who are serious dancers, whether ballet/classical, ballroom or jazz/hip-hop tend to stay young better than the general populace by a pretty noticeable measure.

vash 01-05-2009 10:01 AM

pwd72s 01-05-2009 10:02 AM

Evren's just turned 3 years old daughter is a natural dancer...with no prompting.

I doubt there is a need for a logical application here. It's just in us, that's all.

I cant dance worth a crap, no rhythm whatsoever.
My wife is a great dancer, remember "Boss City" she was a regular.

For me dancing was sort of a necessary tool; like a gun or weapon for hunting would be. I haven't danced much since being married ;) fwiw?

Dancing is in us all, whether we "have rhythm" or not. The secret is to just get out there, turn off your thinking processes and let your body respond to the music, let it do what it wants to do - it's a primeval thing, and it WILL happen - if you just let it. Don't even think about how goofy you think you might look to others (turn ALL thinking processes off).

If you can do this, yeah, some will laugh at you but most will laugh joyously, watching the joy you are expressing. If you can get yourself into that state, you won't even be aware of others (except your partner if you're physically interacting).

Ya don't have to know nuthin' 'bout "dancing" to do the above. Learning various dance steps can come later if you want, but the above is all you really need to do to have what many describe as a transcendental experience.

Oh, and if you and your partner find it hard to wind down after shakin' yer booties all night, there's always the Horizontal Mambo (I'll wager you got yer own version of that down )

It's also gotta be the world's best way to meet someone and how they do on the dance floor is usually a good indicator of how much fun they are to do the Horizontal Mambo with. :D

vash 01-05-2009 10:35 AM

dancing is plumage.

i find nothing sexier than a hot chick, undulating to music. especially if there is a pole on the stage.

herr_oberst 01-05-2009 10:37 AM

Dance like no one's watching
Sing like no one's listening
Live each day like it's your last.

(or not - it's up to you)

Seahawk 01-05-2009 10:39 AM

I enjoy dancing...being able to do a respectable waltz, beach music stuff and some ballroom/big band swing has been, shall we say, a social lubricant:cool:

Horizontal Mambo beats that (don' need no steenkin' stage - use yer own pole :D).
