Guys I could sure you some good thoughts

I meant "use" and not "you." The stress is taking a toll.

For me an my wife.

We both work for the state. We, along with 150 other state workers were fired by the new Governor on Wednesday. As of 5 p.m. today we will both be unemployed.

On top of that, the Prosecutor that fired me two years ago when he came into office, is scared that I am going to run against him in 2010 and has started a smear campaign that will probably be page one in our local paper today.

I am trying to rise above it all, but at 3:00 in the morning when you are lying wide awake in bed it sure gets tough. I need to stay strong for my wife and daughter so I just keep putting on a smiling face for them. You guys are all I got.

bivenator 01-09-2009 05:53 AM

Kurt, very sorry to hear of your situation. Stay strong.

ruf-porsche 01-09-2009 05:56 AM

Sorry to hear about your problems. I was laid off back in Sept. 2008. I'm trying to make the best of it. I'm spending a lot of time with my 4 yr. old son. He's talking quit a bit, and now when you ask him a question he can reply with an answer. My wife thinks he has autism but I don't think so. At least I have a monthly pension that cover my expenses and medical insurance.

Times are tough and I think times will get worse before they get better.

I'm hoping that change for this country will lead to a better tomorrow for everyone.

Alot of good people getting pink slips lately, Kurt - sorry to hear that you both got them at the same time. That's got to be ugly...

Try to turn this high stress time into some quality family time. Shut the phone off, don't watch the news, don't read the paper. Go to a park, take a hike, have a fun drive. Your priorities are your family and your health. Everything else is just stuff. Okay, the Porsches are really cool stuff -but the are just stuff.;)

Hang in there Kurt.

Sorry to hear that Kurt. In the short term I think you should get some P.R. help on the 'smear campaign'. Maybe someone hear can help.

In the long term use this as an opportunity to look at what you want from life and figure out how to get it.

JeremyD 01-09-2009 06:06 AM

Sorry to hear it Kurt - my best advice is network. Look up old friends - people you have done business with in the past. Get out of the house and physically see them. Even if it's just to drop in and shake their hand.

In this economy - jobs will be filled by people that you know. No need to risk a job on an unknown entity. The best way people know that you are looking is by you telling them. No begging - just this is my current situation - if you hear of anything let me know. This works so much better in person and you will feel better when you reconnect.

lendaddy 01-09-2009 06:07 AM

Sorry to hear that Kurt. You knew you were getting let go though right? So I assume the smear is what's got you down, how nasty is it? Can you get your counter story out in the media?

I can tell you that it gets easier (the insane stress) trust me on this. This too shall pass.

strupgolf 01-09-2009 06:10 AM

Sorry to hear the news, but after a while it will look better. Keep up a good front, run against him and kick his butt in the next election. I got the ax in 2007, earn half of what I used to, but I'm very happy now. I'm doing what I want to do rather than what I have to do. I took stock of what I have, what I need, and thank god my wife still has her job. But I'm probably much older then you and have finally realized that I don't need nearly as much as I thought. We have been through these times before and will again. When I think back to when the news said it was bad, in reality it wasn't.

widebody911 01-09-2009 06:10 AM

has started a smear campaign that will probably be page one in our local paper today.

That was you?

Burnin' oil 01-09-2009 06:13 AM

Tough break(s). If there is a news story, let us know. I know people who know people.

Now that made me laugh! Thanks!

stomachmonkey 01-09-2009 06:17 AM

Bummer.

That sucks.

Don't know what to say other than hang in there.

Take some time to recharge before plunging into anything else.

In your current state of mind you may make hasty rash decisions.

Nothing going on now that can't wait a couple of weeks to address.

When my last co of 14 years shut the doors on us I reacted too quickly and in hindsight would have handled certain things differently.

Tishabet 01-09-2009 06:20 AM

That sucks Kurt... as Lendaddy said, this too shall pass. If you haven't done so already, you should join the Pelican OT group on LinkedIn, never hurts to expose your resume to people you know.

Keep your chin up in these hard times and you'll be teaching your daughter a lesson she will never forget.

legion 01-09-2009 06:21 AM

Maybe you should run against the prosecutor that is smearing you...

widgeon13 01-09-2009 06:26 AM

Sorry to hear about this, you think they might have split it up and not fired both of you or at least not at the same time.

x2, Thats my plan. Moving to a town that I haven't lived in since I was a kid. I still have friends and family there, but my only hope is for the "friendship" thing. it's a "backwards" kinda remote area. Keep your head up. I'm going to entertain the idea of jobs outside my "expertise", they may not be what I'm used to or permanent (i'm only staying one year).

What I'm trying to say is, fear of the unknown is normal, and "forced" change just plain sucks, BUT.... "Grieve" for a bit, then pick yourself up. Sounds like you've been pretty successful so far. How did you get to this point? Couldn't be random events, it must have been hard work. This is just the next rung in life's ladder.

Now that my "hallmark moment" is over. Stay focused and good luck. You shouldn't need any luck but it's there just incase. Take care.

cgarr 01-09-2009 06:48 AM

Just keep the truth on your side, they cant change that, our local paper tried a smear campaign against me several years back, I am now on top of the world and the paper is all but folded and out of business.

Truth always wins, you may not think so at the time but it does.

crustychief 01-09-2009 07:27 AM

Kurt, sorry to hear about your job, but like the people said, things will get better for you. just stay motivated and try to be positive. cgarr is right, the truth always wins.

turbo6bar 01-09-2009 07:40 AM

+1 to cgarr. Truth, honesty, and integrity can never be taken away.

You have health, family, and shelter. You're steps ahead of many these days. I wish you best luck. jurgen
