Many truly great songwriters here. Bob Dylan (little Bobby Zimmerman from Duluth, MN) is the Poet Laureate of our generation. Even when he speaks, lyrics come out.

Nobody's mentioned Randy Newman,, one of the greats..
Of course Neil Young, Dylan, Zevon, Paul Simon, Mark Knoeffler |
You've done a good job so far on the older stuff.
Personally, I think Kurt Cobain wrote some amazingly good stuff, and was headed in a very cool direction on their last album before he killed himself like a schmuck. Good call on the Misfits too. I'm not sure if Danzig actually wrote their stuff, but those lyrics are the most catchy I've ever heard. You can hear one of those songs once, and then be able to repeat every word the rest of your life. |
My list is a long one... and would go something like this... in no particular order and including some relative unknowns that are well worth checking out...
Lennon/McCartney Jagger/Richards Steve Earle Eleanor McEvoy Mary Chapin Carpenter Shawn Colvin Bruce Springsteen Jerry Leiber/Mike Stoller Woody Guthrie Beth Wood John Prine Willie Dixon Ray Davies Brian Wilson Van Morrison Neil Young Elvis Costello Nick Drake Tom Waits Wendy Bucklew John Fogerty Bob Dylan Carole King Holland/Dozier/Holland Jackson Browne Joni Mitchell Warren Zevon Kris Kristofferson James Taylor Roy Orbison Paul Simon __________________________________ Thunder Road - B. Springsteen The screen door slams Mary's dress waves Like a vision she dances across the porch As the radio plays Roy Orbison singing for the lonely Hey that's me and I want you only Don't turn me home again I just can't face myself alone again Don't run back inside darling you know just what I'm here for So you're scared and you're thinking That maybe we ain't that young anymore Show a little faith, there's magic in the night You ain't a beauty, but hey you're alright Oh and that's alright with me You can hide `neath your covers And study your pain Make crosses from your lovers Throw roses in the rain Waste your summer praying in vain For a savior to rise from these streets Well now I'm no hero That's understood All the redemption I can offer, girl Is beneath this dirty hood With a chance to make it good somehow Hey what else can we do now Except roll down the window And let the wind blow back your hair Well the night's busting open These two lanes will take us anywhere We got one last chance to make it real To trade in these wings on some wheels Climb in back Heaven's waiting on down the tracks Oh oh come take my hand Riding out tonight to case the promised land Oh oh Thunder Road, oh Thunder Road oh Thunder Road Lying out there like a killer in the sun Hey I know it's late we can make it if we run Oh Thunder Road, sit tight take hold Thunder Road Well I got this guitar And I learned how to make it talk And my car's out back If you're ready to take that long walk From your front porch to my front seat The door's open but the ride it ain't free And I know you're lonely For words that I ain't spoken But tonight we'll be free All the promises'll be broken There were ghosts in the eyes Of all the boys you sent away They haunt this dusty beach road In the skeleton frames of burned out Chevrolets They scream your name at night in the street Your graduation gown lies in rags at their feet And in the lonely cool before dawn You hear their engines roaring on But when you get to the porch they're gone On the wind, so Mary climb in It's a town full of losers And I'm pulling out of here to win. |

love sonny terry and brownie mcgee !! love garcia and dylan who are the new poets and songwriters? Beck is fantastic. You may enjoy his last 5 albums, maybe not. Quite the word-smith Elliot Smith is an amazing writer and player. He unfortunately stabbed himself in the heart a few years ago and is now dead. Try one of his earlier records, well, try anything but Figure 8 to get a feel for it...love all his work. WILCO - Jeff Tweedy is a wonderful writer. I prefer the last 3 records..... Thats about all I can think of as far as songwriters are concerned...there are many many new bands that are amazing...but if we are talking poetry, these 3 are my tops for new stuff |

http://www.rokymovie.com/ looking at your list, i realize i forgot Townes and Joe Strummer....its interesting that Townes, Strummer and Roky all have amazing documentaries made about them the past few years. Man o man the Townes film is depressing as hell and the Strummer film makes me tear up when i watch it :( i bought it and watch it too much though. love JOE STRUMMER |
Elvis Costello.
Yes, I know John R. mentioned him in his long list, but I mention him alone. |
Jonathan Richman

Yes, the roky erickson movie was good, but so sad for the most part. At one point during the film, an absolutely BLAZING version of 'white faces' plays. I gotta find that version. Cam King's guitar playing is just awesome. The Roky film reminded me of a cross between the Ramones documentary and that movie Gray Gardens about the 2 old women living in the run down mansion with their cats. I would quibble with J Richman but then I remembered how great some of his later stuff (That Summer Feeling!) is. Elvis Costello, definitely. First 4 albums should be mandatory for all. Tweedy though...think he's lost something off his fastball but then again I prefer the pre-Ghost Is Born stuff in general. Although, Impossible Germany just might be his best song and Cline's guitar playing is a case study in Verlaine/Lloyd-meets-boutique class A amp-refinement and taste. I'm telling you though, Robert Pollard is one of the greatest songwriters of the last 40 years. It's hard for neophytes to sift through the chaff and a lot of the 4 track recorded stuff is an acquired taste for ears not used to it, though. Pete Shelley, Paul Westerburg, and Bob Mould belong on the list ahead of Cobain IMHO. |

J. Richman....personally I prefer the Modern Lovers stuff to his solo stuff. Pablo Picasso -- a little assistance from John Cale never hurts. Grey Gardens !! awsome film..nice reference...i thought of the film Crumb...odd talent. odd family. odd living arrangements...just plain odd. It was sad, but hey, he is out playing again so the therapy helped apparently. I'll have to add John Lydon (Rotten) to this list. Like dee dee and strummer, he has written some of the all-time classic lyrics. |
RE: Robert Pollard - must admit, ive not listened to much guided by voices stuff...ill start exploring it asap

oh..and no "best of" rock n roll list is complete with out mentioning my uncle,

You call yourself the Moral Majority We call ourselves the people in the real world Trying to rub us out, but we're going to survive God must be dead if you're alive You say, 'God loves you. Come and buy the Good News' Then you buy the president and swimming pools If Jesus don't save 'til we're lining your pockets God must be dead if you're alive Circus-tent con-men and Southern belle bunnies Milk your emotions then they steal your money It's the new dark ages with the fascists toting bibles Cheap nostalgia for the Salem Witch Trials Stodgy ayatollahs in their dobble-knit ties Burn lots of books so they can feed you their lies Masturbating with a flag and a bible God must be dead if you're alive Blow it out your ass, Jerry Falwell Blow it out your ass, Jesse Helms Blow it out your ass, Ronald Reagan What's wrong with a mind of my own? The day drags by like a wounded animal The approaching disease, 92 degrees The blood oin our veins and the brains in our head The approaching unease, 92 degrees Long ago in the headlines, they noticed it too But too late for the loved ones and nearly for you ..... Shaky lines on the horizon Snakey lines invade each person Watch the red line creeping upwards Watch the sanity line weaken The volcanic depths of Hades' ocean Bubble under, these crazed eruptions It wriggles and wrythes and bites within, Just below the sweating sun I wondered when this would happen again Now I watch the red line, reach that number again The blood in our veins and the brains in our head ..... Drink the water with jagged glass Eat the cactus with bleeding mouth Not 91 or 93, but 92 Fahrenheit degrees Shaky lines on the horizon Snakey lines invade each person Not 91 or 93, but 92 Fahrenheit degrees |
