I played D&D and AD&D for a while, and then worked my way to "Car Wars" (I think that's what it was called). Kinda geekey, I know. But then, I was a bit of a geek... :p

All the Steve Jackson games were great. I went to the headquaters in Austin in the early '80s and played a test version of "Illuminati".

I never really played. We like collecting/painting the lead figures and drawing game maps.

The actual game was a waste of time...

Yup, played most of the RPG games out there in my teens and early twenties. Also got into miniature painting and tabletop wargaming. Been into computer games since I was eleven, got into MUDs at Uni and played Everquest when it came out. Quit EQ after a couple of years and refused to play another MMORPG. Haven't played RPGs but a couple of times in the last decade.. just not interested any more.

There, do you feel less dorky now Vash... the Stampede?

svandamme 01-17-2009 10:45 AM

naw, i went to clubs and brought home crazy chicks to play with...
It has it's pro's and con's

Car Wars rocked.

campbellcj 01-17-2009 12:18 PM

Yep. Did the painted figures and all too. Also Traveller, Car Wars etc. I gave it up pretty much after Jr. High although by then the video game thing was starting to take hold.

I played AD&D and Champions (super hero RPG) from age 12 until 18. Once I went to college I made new friends who had different interests, and I really didn't have the time any more. I still have my gaming stuff in boxes in the garage. It seemed like a waste to throw ith away, and I had a lot of good memories playing so I kept it all. I haven't touched the stuff for over 20 years so it's probably time to let it all go.

6th level ranger. gave it up about seventh grade. watched a kid burst out crying when his character got killed. decided to get out before i was as emotionally damaged as him.

I remember that game. You had to balance the points you used with weaknesses and strengths. IIRC you could use weapons or other things, and mobs could roll and see if they could take them. Good times.

Played all the time, we would start on Friday, with a few cases of beer and the tokemaster and go till Sunday night. During the summer we would play for a week at a time. Then we switched to Boot Hill, D&D the western.

Pazuzu 01-18-2009 08:00 AM

I played AD&D and CarWars, and painted the figurines (although, mine looked like they fell in acid baths, I had ZERO skillz).

I even brought ALL of my AD&D stuff to college, thinking it would be a hotbed of gaming (I mean, dozens of hardcover books, boxes of paperwork, everything). I was sadly mistaken, college was not a hotbed of gaming, it was a hotbed of drinking, drugging and having sex. My poor innocent life was changed forever.

RedBeard, I hate you that you actually worked at Steve Jackson Games. He was a freaking mad scientist when it came to games (Paranoia anyone?)

Paranoia is the last RPG I played and the only one I would actually consider playing again. Ah the joys of B.S.ing 'The Computer' and framing your team mates in amusingly outrageous ways.

Last time we had these toy disc-shooters and the poor guy who got framed got pelted in real life! He didn't find it too amusing for a minute until he realized just how ludicrous the whole thing was. :D

WolfeMacleod 01-18-2009 09:29 AM

I did.
D&D in grade school got me interested in Sci-Fi, which led me to attending conventions, which led to my first career as a Knife and Sword maker, and also to an old girldfriend who's dad was a great musician. This got me interested in guitars, which led me to my current profession which I entered by converting my metalworking knowledge into woodworking and bullding guitars, then onto what I do now.

Ultimately, I owe it all to Gygax.

I played AD&D staring around 6th grade through high school, even played a couple times when I was in the military. Other RPGs i got in to to varying degrees were Traveler, Twilight 2000, Morrow Project, Gamma World, and a few others.

Lots of the early Steve Jackson games, like Melee, Ogre, and Car Wars.

For computer games, I played a lot of Everquest for a while, and until recently Lord of the Rings Online (since closed Beta). The problem with all MMORPGs is at some point they tend to cross the line from fun to work. Lately I have played a lot of Fallout 3 (which is sort of loosely similar to the old pen & paper "Morrow Project") and am currently addicted to Grand Theft Auto 4.

For those of you who played and enjoyed D&D, you may find the computer game Neverwinter Nights interesting. It is fairly old, so you can usually find it cheap, and it doesn't need a super high-end computer to run (NWN, not NWN2 which is more recent/demanding). Look for the "Neverwinter Nights Diamond" edition, it is the base game plus 2 expansions and an add-on module, I have seen it in the bargain bin for ~$20

In fact, Amazon has it for $20

The game also shipped with editing tools to make your own modules, so there is a ton of downloadable content, available. Some of it is garbage as expected, but there are some that are excellent, professionally done, including some good recreations of early AD&D modules.

This is a good place to start:

Few times, never really into it much

Hebrewhomeboy 01-19-2009 12:28 AM

In my college days some buddies and I would drink and play. Had a blast. Haven't played it in years though.

I think I love you...I've been trying to find some type of D&D online/MMORPG style game that is not WoW. I tried the official D&D Stormreach game, but my 4 year old clearance sale computer couldn't handle it :( and I'm not buying a computer just to play some expensive addictive game.

Something that is cheap, mild and can still possible by interactive with others like NWN is JUST what I was looking for!

FYI, if you want something more intensive, check out Stormreach:

It's like WoW, but runs on the exact V3.5 D&D ruleset.

Played AD&D and Melee. I found it much more interesting just reading the modules and books instead of actually playing.--especially the Fiend Folio and Dieties and Demigods tomes. Still have most of the stuff--including thr lead figures somewhere--I have seen vintage stuff go for decent money on E-bay.
