be totally honest...did you play D&D?

plenty of poindexters here in OT. come clean, did you play dungeons and dragons?

911Rob 01-16-2009 09:30 AM

I had a room mate that was really into this in the 80's; kind of an extension of his "RISK" fetish. I played once. Not that I wasn't interested, I've just never been a fiction kinda guy. I've never bothered with any kind of games, and when I did, I just play until I conquer it, then I lose interest.

My son is a big gamer, loves his Play Station. He brings it over and we play golf once in a while. I like that. Almost beat him last game, lost by one stroke because I choked on the 18th green. :)

onewhippedpuppy 01-16-2009 09:30 AM

No, I prefer to bathe and have real friends.:D

id10t 01-16-2009 09:33 AM

Yup. Even went to GenCon in '83. Had all my D&D books signed by Gygax... traded 'em for a Ruger 44 carbine about 20 years ago.

vash 01-16-2009 09:35 AM

honestly, my good friend played it religiously...i almost got sucked into the fantasy. then i met a girl named caroline...changed my perspective on what i really wanted. never scored with caroline, but it did help me get my targets straight.

Yep. With some chicks to boot. :)

When you look at all that D&D has spawned...RPGs, MMORPGs's, fantasy genre movies, books, etc, etc it really is unbelievable. Gary Gygax was one smart mofo.

So who here plays an MMO?

vash 01-16-2009 09:39 AM

what is MMO?

onewhippedpuppy 01-16-2009 09:39 AM

I had two roommates that got into Ultima Online, kind of a D&D esque role playing online game. We of course made fun of them mercilessly. One of them was more casual, and somehow even managed to score with women (a lot) with a big map of the UO world taped to his wall. The other got a bit too engrossed, and would dissappear into his room for days on end to play. He somehow ended up sharing IMs with the wife of another player that also lived in KS, and ended up sleeping with her. No joke. He eventually realized how nutty it all was and pulled the plug.

legion 01-16-2009 09:42 AM

I tried a few times in high school with my friends. As is always the case, the quests never went as planned and most of the time was spent arguing and not playing. I gave up on it pretty quick.

A LOT of the people I work with play D&D, other RPGs, and Warcrack. The week of GenCon is a ghost town around here. Guess what? Most of the people I know who play D&D spend most of their gaming sessions arguing with each other over the proper application of the rules...

I get made fun of because I like cars and not imaginary characters...

911boost 01-16-2009 10:03 AM

Nope, never played it.

tabs 01-16-2009 10:09 AM

I play with myself...does that count? I have the spots on the ceiling to prove it....

tabs 01-16-2009 10:09 AM

Why do I need DD I have Pelican....

mossguy 01-16-2009 10:10 AM

Nope, but my son did!

Best, Tom

sammyg2 01-16-2009 10:11 AM

Nope, never played D&D.
I still play doom, doom II, final doom, heretic, and hexen tho ;)

I use doomsday engine to run them with XP.

Clearly not you. :)

id10t 01-16-2009 10:16 AM

sammyg2 - do you still play the original Quake?

livi 01-16-2009 10:19 AM

Never.

My 8 year old son is however completely lost in World of Warcraft. It takes a crowbar to separate him from it.

peppy 01-16-2009 10:34 AM

I tried it once while I was away at a boarding school. I really didn't get it. (I'll bet that comes as a surprise)

Paco Anton 01-16-2009 10:44 AM

I played every available role playing game in the 80s and 90s: D&D, AD&D, Call of Cthulhu, Pendragon, Star Wars, Warhammer, .... you name it.

Also got into wargames: AH, VG, ASL, WiF, ... you name it

Then into MMORPGs: Star Wars Galaxies, WoW, ...

Now I have a 2 year old son :)

juanbenae 01-16-2009 10:46 AM

not!

Is that the name of your character? ;)

You know, so when you kill someone it says: "You were just killed by: a 2 year old son."

gtc 01-16-2009 10:47 AM

Battletech > D&D

Tishabet 01-16-2009 11:20 AM

I was a science geek, president of the science olympiad club at my HS, boy scout until I was 18, majored in computer science in college... But can honestly say I have never played D&D.

anotherblack944 01-16-2009 11:45 AM

Does Zork count?

stomachmonkey 01-16-2009 11:46 AM

No!

ramonesfreak 01-16-2009 12:02 PM

Yep, pretty much the same here.

I have daughters now. Stopped playing when they gutted SWG. Which server on SWG?

onlycafe 01-16-2009 12:19 PM

nope.
i used to play asteroids on a quarter machine though. does that count?

TerryH 01-16-2009 12:29 PM

Never played D&D, but I was hugely into Everquest when it first came out. A bunch of us (16) that raced simulators online formed a guild in Everquest. Man, I have to say, that was more fun than a barrel of monkeys. Later tried Star Wars, but the thrill was gone.

HardDrive 01-16-2009 12:40 PM

I played until I started noticing girls.....

red-beard 01-16-2009 12:42 PM

No.....

I played ADVANCED Dungeons & Dragons

I preferred Traveller or Survivor. I also liked some of the Tank battle and Air Combat similations. I lost interest about 1/2 way through college.

Nope. I have it but haven't found a way to run it in 32 or 64 bit.
it doesn't work with doomsday.
If you know a way, I'm all over it.

slakjaw 01-16-2009 12:44 PM

Nope

slakjaw 01-16-2009 12:45 PM

But I do play Cybernations.net

JavaBrewer 01-16-2009 01:01 PM

As a lifelong computer nerd my friends and coworkers think I have some sort of brain damage cause I have never been into computer games. Zero interest.

My goofing around time is spent sightseeing with Google Earth.

lukeh 01-16-2009 01:13 PM

Yup, all the time (early 80s). I also enjoyed the D & D based Boulder's Gate and Icewind Dale computer games that came much later. I was also 1st board on the chess team and starting DE on the football team. So no, just because you play D&D and are on the chess club doesn't mean you can't chew gum and walk at the same time.

slodave 01-16-2009 01:20 PM

Yes. I had some cool characters that my cousin kept for me. Then, he stopped playing and dumped everything :(.

Schrup 01-16-2009 01:23 PM

I have never played D&D, was too busy partying. Now that my party days are long gone, I do play MMOs. I currently play Lord of the Rings Online. I play about 6-8 hours a week if I don't have anything major going on. I don't play much when the weather gets nice.

There's a small freeware program called DosBox. It's a DOS emulator. Probably version 7 or 8.
