In the last six months, we've hired two on the graphics team, one on the integration team, and are adding one more to the team next month based on an interview last week. I think Systems has added 3 or 4 in the last 6 months. God blessed me with a job in a stable industry. We've got work to go 'round.

Maybe I'll need to leave the state (CA.) No great loss, as it's barely affordable to live here anyway.

About two years ago, Bank of America left San Francisco for North Carolina. I think they might have had the right idea early on.

As is, Cali stands to lose an estimated 165,000 jobs this year.

An interesting article regarding the current woes of the architectural profession.

Stay off the chopping block by becoming a star employee, go the extra mile, kick ass at work. Complete tasks in a timely manner, get to work on time, work efficiently, stay until your daily goal is met, take on more responsibility, and look busy!
I did that the first job I had, and quickly worked my self out of a job. The boss said, you were better than I thought you would be and I've run out of work for you (he was relocating from Michigan to California in 1985) - but I'll give you a good recommendation.

An architectural illustrator (computer) I know was recently fired in Phoenix, and a month later hired in Colorado Springs. His first paycheck bounced, so he is moving back to Michigan where a mutual friend is letting him live with him until he finds work somewhere.

I've read it's over 20% within the city limits of Detroit.

I'd like to do something outside of the norm for a few years. Overseas still looks like a nice adventure. I feel the need to escape Michigan.

An architect I know by their work has been teaching in Italy for the last two years. When I heard this I said to myself; that sounds good.

+1 to George. Being a "kick-ass" employee in an architectural office doesn't mean diddly. The couple of folks that got to stay on with my former employer to help him wind down were the two cheapest employees and the ones that undervalued themselves the most (i.e. they were the ones that put up with the most exploitation and most crap - working OT for free, etc.) Actually sticking up for what you're worth, regardless of what you contribute - is a surefire way to get kicked out.

Very short-sighted and stupid, but that's what it comes down to - who's the cheapest.

As a side note, the last time this guy tried the same thing he ended up having to hire back one of the people he let go for considerably more money. If I ever got a call from him asking to come back I'd be hard-pressed to not laugh in his face - but I WOULD work as a consultant - for the right price. But we'd sign and execute a contract first, I'd decide on my own hours and I'd work from my house - not his office. I'd get him all the deliverables on time and as per the contract, but nothing more. I'm done with people like him, I don't care if it means I stay unemployed for another few months.

I was hired ~2 months ago. I'm now the full time guy since the other full time person left. Now we need a part timer. One of the perks is that you get to flirt with the hs/college aged ladies.;)

Interviewed on Friday. Another company called today for a phone interview. I applied in November, they locked the positions, now they are open.

Sales - it's where it's at

There are always openings for commissioned sales people. No guaranteed income for those who cannot produce. Lots of money for those who can.
Government workers probably should not apply for these positions.

Ha, try 2 columns of jobs on a 10 column news page. More than half the job openings are for RNs.

Repossession companies are hiring like crazy.

How does one get into that line of work anyway?

2 pages? How about 2 columns, and that's on Sunday!

Call one up. I'd bet some security work or PI work would help a lot. Also military police.

Environmental Consulting still kicking and we hired a new Geologist (PG) last week. The state funded underground storage tank programs spend millions cleaning up groundwater from leaking tanks. Its all paid by gasoline taxes (penny per gallon) and tens of thousands of sites still require cleanup nationwide.

I have had several friends laid off in the industry last year only to be picked up by EPA or consulting firms recently.

If Obama keeps environmental programs funded, especially superfund sites and base closure clean up work going, most will survive this mess. For now its USTs, due-dilligence (Phase I and Phase II assessments), existing federally funded clean-up work and compliance holding everything together in this industry.

If Obama pumps money into infrastructure as he says, a ton of work will be available not only for engineering and construction firms, but environmental consultants as well.

We shall see......

I've hired 3 contractors in the last three months because we have a hiring freeze in place. Never mind that their billing is about double what my FTE's make.

I've seriously told my boss I'm going to quit, come back as a contractor, and double my income. Eff this....

red911sc 01-20-2009 03:59 PM

I switched jobs (in the mech. eng. field) late Sept. The place I left laid off 40% of their workforce in early Nov. The place I am at seems stable although they have put a hiring and wage freeze in place. I feel comfortable as the owners have made very positive comments about my performance. I also worked here before under the previous owner (who is now partner) so that positive history helps.

Well, you guys can forget about working at Warner Bros. They just laid off 800 people today, and closed all open positions.

varmint 01-20-2009 04:24 PM

****ing lovely. 800 people who think they can do my job flooding into the market.

Scott R 01-20-2009 04:31 PM

Four new people started on my floor on Monday, I've hired three in the last three months for my team. We are expanding this year, and last year, turned profits at each quarter. I think up 4% this quarter, of course the company is preparing for the worst under the new administration, but we have solid plans to keep the momentum going.

Banking is not for everyone, but my benefits are near free and I've always received an annual raise. (of course we get picketed by conspiracy theorists, but oh well)
