with apologies to those in cold climates

Today

Air temp: 80F
Water temp: 53F (that's what wetsuits are for)
Winds: offshore, 5-15mph
Swell: NW groundswell, 2-3'

Highlight other than tubes you could drive a small car through was a gray whale swimming about 15' away from me.

And just for good measure, from Carlsbad on Friday, brief stop during a ride down to SD to meet a friend for dinner:

Shhhh! You're supposed to post lamentations of state budget crisis and tax IOUs, not photos like this:
http://nostatic.com/photos/zuma640-3.jpg
Everyone will want to move out here; and we don't need the additional traffic. :D

cl8ton 01-18-2009 07:51 PM

Nice pics Todd! Apart from the crisis, dam I love California!
Recently ran my dachshund in this event in 70+ deg weather :D

I've said it before and I'll say it again; you Ba$tards!

Wickd89 01-18-2009 08:15 PM

I know, I know.

Today I was so hot when washing the cars, that I had to go in the house to take off the trainers and throw on flip-flops. Boy it was hot....;-)

UconnTim97 01-18-2009 08:23 PM

Hey jerkwads, it was a balmy 11 degrees this morning in Philly.

trekkor 01-18-2009 08:27 PM

I was visiting So Cal this past week. Saw 90°+ on Wednesday.

Your hideous smog and traffic made me appreciate Napa Valley even more... :p

trekkor 01-18-2009 08:29 PM

It was mid 70's today. Clear skies.

It was 37° this morning, however.

I don't see any smog in those pictures. Or in front of me right now. (Typing outdoors on laptop at 9:30 pm in about 65deg air).

UconnTim97 01-18-2009 08:30 PM

I was glad we have heated seats. I do know understand heated steering wheels, as I hate driving with gloves on.

Flew into Columbus Ohio several years ago to stay with an old friend while on business.
Heaviest jacket I had was a wind breaker in 16 deg weather!

How in the hell do you all put up with that? I'm serious!

Tobra 01-18-2009 09:16 PM

Smog at the beach? Does it ever get that bad, I thought that was a valley/air inversion thing

Mid 70's here, looked for a mandarin orange tree

kstar 01-18-2009 09:42 PM

Looked fine down here in San Diego, too. Could see the "big tubes" from far away.

Cell phone pic from Del Mar Heights looking down on I-5 and the San Dieguito Lagoon; the "track" and fairgrounds are down there, too.

Discovered by the Germans in 1904, they named it San Diego, which of course in German means..... "a whale's vagina".

(I couldn't resist)

Bill Douglas 01-18-2009 10:07 PM

It's certainly not cold here. I've just got back from a months holiday at a beach house. Christmas dinner was rock lobster cooked on the charcol BBQ alongside slabs of ham.

I got in a number of BIG days of surf, double overhead sized wave faces - yikes I'm still sore.

livi 01-18-2009 10:48 PM

Thanks. I feel much better now..

Yeah! It got down to the mid 50s this morning and I was freezing.

slodave 01-19-2009 12:05 AM

I spent the day working on Porsches, wearing shorts and a t-shirt - again... Looks like it's going to be another 80 degree day... :) I have to visit a client, so I'll be forced to wear a pair of Levi's in the morning.

John_AZ 01-19-2009 05:16 AM

No apologies needed.
Spent many 4th of Julys near Gualala.

THE ARIZONA CARDINALS are in the SUPERBOWL!!!!!

We get our share of cold weather out here as well, the temperature is supposed to drop to a high of +69F on Wednesday, and it may RAIN on Sunday.

Jim Richards 01-19-2009 06:57 AM

Snow flakes this AM. Winter for another 50-60 days. I think it's OK...four seasons are nice to see around here. :)

sammyg2 01-19-2009 06:57 AM

Shorts and flip-flops to work this morning, it was 7o degrees at 5:30 am in Orange. 9 days in a row of 80+ degrees.
Unfortunately the low humidity is drying out my sunuses, or is that sini? ;)

scottmandue 01-19-2009 07:05 AM

Yeah... but we are all a bunch of gay drug addicts.

Sweet! Whole new meaning to "Winter swell"

Dick alert: It'll be about 70F here, today.

Sarah 01-19-2009 11:52 AM

At least the sun is currently out...but the roads/lots are very slushy...we need more snow to cover it up so it looks clean again...

911boost 01-19-2009 11:57 AM

Mid 60's here on the front range today. I drove the Turbo into work.

Supposed to be almost 70 tomorrow, I am going to ride the motorcycle in.

It will be snowing in a week I am sure.

Bill

DARISC 01-19-2009 01:24 PM

Don't be deceived by the CA propaganda pics. It has snowed (made the ground all white for about 20 min.) TWICE since I've lived in S.D. County! And this was in S.D. proper and some of the coastal burghs (which have to be also constantly on the alert for Tsunamis).

Snow is a serious threat and affects the back country every winter to the extent that skis must be used in the mountains that loom ominously, clearly visible from the coast (on the rare days that smog lets you see more than a half mile).

If that's not bad enough, it's a freakin' desert (avg. less than 10" annual rainfall)!

And then Mf Nature plays a dirty trick every couple of years and makes it rain a lot and every freakin' thing grows and gets all green and pretty.

Good, right? Yeah - then the desert sun dries it all into parchment, everything turns dead brown, lightening strikes and the whole freakin' county goes up in flames!

And the devastating, dehydrating Santa Ana winds frequently blow in from the desert on top of that, making the suicide and crime rates sky rocket.

Did I mention the earthquakes?

Maybe the WORST thing is the toll this miserable frying pan takes on Porsches, whose merciless owners thoughtlessly wear them out by driving them, year after year, all year long instead of letting them rest for the winter.

Ooooooh, I wouldn't move here if I were you! :)

Do you know when that was taken and what the air temp was? This week was probably -30 up there, or colder. We go to Madeline Island in the summer, Lake Superior is too cold for me on the warmest day of the year. It's like needles in your skin.

Hugh R 01-19-2009 06:59 PM

I move to SoCal about 30 years ago when I came out here at Xmas to visit a friend then went back to Boston and spent two day pickaxing my VW out of about 6 feet of snow that had turned to ice from it being repeatedly plowed in by the snow plows.

afterburn 549 01-19-2009 07:40 PM

Hot here in juneau,,45 deg.
But we will have food 3 days from now.
will you ??

No, there's no way that's correct. :)

It's a deep burn
