Pelican Blood Drive
As many of you know my, now, 5 year old son is undergoing chemo for Ewing's Sarcoma. 7 weeks in Houston for 25 Proton radiation treatments. We have been in treatment since July 2008. He has had to have 6 or 7 Red Blood Cell transfusions to save his life. We actually stopped counting as we embrace everyone of them.
I am in the process of getting the AZ PCA to have a free autocross, in lue of giving blood after wards, on the 25th of January to help give back. As I would love to thank everyone who has given blood to save my son's life, that is impossible. In return, I am attempting to get a Blood Drive across the nation in a way to give back. www.unitedbloodservices.org to set up a donation in your area. You can even set up your own Blood Drive. Or call 877-448-4483 #4. This is an not a Pelican Parts sponsored event, but I think Wayne might let it slide! Mike |

Mike,
I think if you give us a name or perhaps an account number, you can get credit and it knocks off some of the expense for all the blood products, you may want to check, a unit of blood is not an insignificant expense. that was sort of trippy, it became sticky while I was making this post and it looked like it disappeared

I have a few unit credits with the Gulfcoast Blood bank. PM me with the hospital and you sons full name. I'm also scheduled to donate again in January. I'm 3 times a year, with a double red-cell donation.

Thanks for making this a sticky. It is a really good cause and it is free to do.
My intention is to NOT have any of your Pelican blood saved for Spencer. That does cost money and the separated blood does have a shelf live. So if Spencer didn't need it, it would be a wasted effort, when someone else could of used it. I would like to get as many donors in your local area to donate and keep it in your local area. Blood collected in Arizona, does not leave the state. Arizona should be covered. Every donation saves 3 lives. This is my way of giving back to those who have given us so much. And it is a pretty easy process, you might even get a cookie afterwards! Cheers, Mike

Red Cells and Platelets are different when you get them. RBC is obviously red in color. A platelet transfusion is an oatmeal color. Too bad white blood cells have a few hour shelf life and can not be used. One of our friends had an IGG or IIG (never heard of it before) transfusion that required extracting "whatever it is" from 40,000 donors. It is like a super immune booster.
It all helps! Mike |

Mike, Give your son a hug for me. Good thoughts and a prayer sent your way. I will be going in today to make a donation. One pint of O+ coming up. I hope it will help someone in need.

Double red is a procedure where your blood goes into a centrifuge, the red cells are removed and the rest is pumped right back where it came from! It lets you give less often and, though it takes longer is supposed to be more comfortable since a smaller needle is used and you leave more hydrated. It's a strange sensation when the plasma that's been sitting in a bag (thus cooling off) gets pumped back in. It's feels like you have an internal air conditioner. I used to do this, but found I prefer the regular whole blood donation.

Can't give blood because of the lousy places I served in the military...but wanted to wish you the best of luck! God bless you and your family.

My AZ autocross blood drive has been put on hold until March or April. United Blood Service mobile unit is booked through February already. This doesn't mean I won't be giving on my own, nor should it deter you all from helping save someone's life!

Mike,
Stay in touch and will help as possible. Am in contact with the Red Cross guys and right now am in the same boat at Fintstone in that they said that I could not donate due to where I was serving. Funny thing is that we ate out of the PX and from what we were told that was American beef and pork shipped to us from the states, but the Red Cross people do not understand. Joe A

This is the weekend to donate blood to YOUR area. You can find a spot www.unitedbloodservices.org be a donar and save someone's life. Arizona needs 800 donars a DAY to keep up with blood needs for the state. You can make a difference in someone's life. Donate today or tomorrow. You will only feel a prick!
