Moving to Dubai/Abu Dahbi - do they lease cars there?
A family member is moving to Abu Dahbi/Dubai for 24-30 months for his law firm. He would rather not buy a car if he can lease it. Since the area is such a car culture he wants something nice instead of importing a car (you also lose warranty by importing). Is there anyone on here that is in the region or has been and can comment on leasing? I know they are a cash culture but perhaps they have considered leases?

Funny you should mention this.
A close personal friend of mine is in the process of relocating to Qatar and mentioned that leases are very uncommon over there. Virtually everything is outright purchase, usually (but not always) cash. Big items like cars are sometimes bought cash (there's a lot of it over there!) but there is financing through western and quasi-western banks. In a more highly westernized city like Dubai, you may find leases, but it sounds like (to their credit) that the people there haven't gotten punch-drunk on credit/lease type deals yet and are still conventional in their thinking when it comes to purchases. For the most part.

Yes its possible. You cannot do anything until you get there and get a permit to live in the country. Many people rent a car until this happens.
I have lived there and just returned after spending 6+ weeks there this spring. Feel free to PM me for details or can email with them if they need more info.

RE: Work in Dubai
http://www.boatdesign.net/forums/services-employment/jobs-available-dubai-17218-2.html Please read the posts by "fleetwing" in the link above. He is a boat builder, but has useful business experience in the UAE which you might want to be aware of (if it's not too late).
