John Updike
...today died. He was 76.
He was one of the quintessential American writers, and definitely in a league with Faulkner, Hemingway and Fitzgerald. He'll be missed. ![]() http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/28/books/28updike.html?pagewanted=5&_r=1&hp

Great writer. RIP.
I think Rabbit Angstrom has to be one of the greatest figures in American literature. Ever. "Couples" was another of my favorites.

WHAT?! How did this not filter down to me until now?! Thank god for Pelican.
Updike was a phenomenal essayist, and a supremely skilled writer of fiction. I honestly didn't like the drive of his stories; some writers you love, some you don't. But he was one of the great ones, and he was immensely talented. This is truly sad news.
